Jul 18, 2016 - Beatrice and Homestead

July 18, 2016 So far we have traveled over 2400 miles and have been in Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and now Nebraska. We still have over 1500 miles to go to get to Springfield, Mass and then we will head back towards home. We are headed to the little town of Beatrice, NE and will hopefully stay at the city park. The temps are expected to be high again today so I soon as we get set up the AC goes on. I think it may stay on tonight and the low is only supposed to be 77. We are now in tornado country so will keep an eye on the...

Apr 30, 2014 - Beatrice, NE - Another Cold Windy Day

(Ron Writing) This morning we discovered that the trailer’s water pump was leaking at the gasket between the pump and the motor. I had a spare used pump a friend gave me a few years ago so I installed it and it seems to work okay. It was late morning before we got that squared away and left our nice campsite in the park. We left Phillipsburg heading east on US-36 through several small towns including Smith Center, KS, home of Peterson Industries which is the manufacturer of the highly regarded Excel brand of 5th wheel trailers. We toured...

Mar 29, 2011 - We're not in Kansas anymore!

In the words of Dorothy, "We're not in Kansas anymore!" In terms of geography though, Nebraska seems to look a lot like the previous mid-western state. For the past five days, we hunkered down at Canning Creek Campground on the shores of Council Grove Lake. Since we have had no wifi, I have been unable to post and keep in touch with all of you about what we have been up to. We have been experiencing cold winds, some snow and cold...

May 27, 2010 - Departure, Blue H'Ways & Westward Expansion

Wednesday & Thursday, May 26 & 27 Loading the 5th wheel in the storage lot, to get it ready to live in for the next 4 months, is a process that requires loading the truck with boxes and bags filled with clothing, food, various supplies, tools and many personal items that we all use on a periodic basis but are easy to forget until you need it. After the truck is loaded and driven to the storage lot all this stuff has to be transferred into the 5th wheel and stored in the various drawers or cabinets. This process is repeated several times...

Aug 27, 2008 - Homesteading!

One of the reasons we had chosen Lincoln as our stop was it's proximity to the Homestead National Monument ( remember, visiting National Park is one of our 'goals' ) This National Monument is about 45 miles south of Lincoln and when looking at the map, appears to be in the middle of nowhere. As we were driving to it we wondered why it was located so far off the beaten track. We would get our answer - and I will share it with you - but first some background information..... The idea of giving free land to the people was first proposed by...
