Aug 14, 2012 - chimney rock
We started out of hwy 80 and then we turned off on a 2 lane road, 26. The land changed right away. It was like we were on a big Plateau with lots of big rocks. You could see for miles. We drove for 160 miles and stopped at the Chimney Rock Pioneer RV Park. Another nice park with full hook ups but no restrooms or laundry which is OK with us because we never use either one. The only thing I usually look for a laundry, because that is where the book exchange is. No new books for me today. We are the only people at the camp ground. You stop...

Oct 15, 2011 - Chimney Rock, Bayard Nebraska
This was one of the landmarks which guided the wagon trains in the right direction after their great 600 mile trek over the great plains toward the Rocky Mountains. Apparently there are all kinds of names, dates and personal information scratched into the rock on Chimney Rock as well. The Native Americans also left their hieroglyphics on these outcroppings. We were not allowed access to the rock...it is being protected from further damage and unnecessary erosion.

Aug 17, 2011 - Scotts Bluff, Nebraska
We left Glenwood Springs Monday around noon and drove to Denver. There we had dinner with POG friends Jim and Chris and spent the night at a WalMart. Tuesday we left Denver late and drove a short distance to the Wyoming Visitor Center, just outside Cheyenne and stayed in the parking lot there. This was a planned stop for fuel for the bus and gas for the car. $3.709 for diesel and $3.299 for gas. Eat your heart out California!!! Next day we drove to Bayard, NE and checked into the Pioneer Crossing Campground. Arriving early gave us plenty of...

Jun 22, 2011 - Bayard, NE Temp 83
We decided to get off the Interstate today and take one of America's byways. It was still a pleasant 70 degrees when we left this morning and still very breezy. Bob said the wind was still strong as far as driving the RV all day. But the temp did not stay at 70. By the time we stopped for lunch, it was easily up in the 80 degrees. We were going to hit a Denny's at Fling J's for lunch, but there was no place to park the RV, so we continued on down the road until we found a rest stop and had tuna fish sandwiches instead. Not so bad. Once we...

Aug 29, 2010 - Leaving SD-Chimney Rock NE
Sunday Aug 29- packed up –ready to hit the road for Southern US. After a lot of discussion we decided that our original plan of going thru WY,CO etc was going to be a longer trip and we were running a little low on funds so we angled down through Nebraska- saw Chimney Rock and then took Highway 83 south through NE,KS, OK, and TX to save some miles. We went through the National Buffalo Gap Grasslands. The Buffalo Gap is located in southwest South Dakota, and includes over 591,000 acres of prairie intermingled with eroding badlands. The "east...

Jul 10, 2008 - Chimney Rock, NE
Our first stop today was at Chimney Rock, just south of Bayard Nebraska. If you happen to have a Nebraska quarter handy, look at the "tails" side and you will see a depiction of the rock formation. Chimney Rock was a guide for settlers crossing to the west in the 1800s, as well as for pony express riders and trappers. Claire and Amanda had this on their "must see" list because of their days playing Oregon Trail on the computer back in their elementary and junior high school days. They had "fond" memories of Chimney Rock because this was...

Jun 24, 2008 - A Place I've Always Wanted To Go
Tuesday, June 24...Chiminey Rock Pioneer Crossing RV---Bayard, NE We had some bad thunderstorms overnight. No damage or any problems like that. But a lot of thunder, lightening, small hail & rain. The storm woke Joe & I up a couple of times. We got up at our normal time 8 AM, we felt pretty good considering we were shorted on our sleep. We planned to take our time with breakfast and packing up to leave. We wanted to leave by 10 AM. We did get out by 10 AM but I was surprised. The rain had made our campground into a swamp. The RV that was 2...
