Jul 17, 2017 - A Stop at Chimney Rock

Our route from Douglas took us down I25 to a point where US 26 splits off to follow the North Platte River valley. The highway also parallels the original paths of the Oregon Trail, the California Trail and the Mormon Pioneer Trail. There are several locations along the way that provide opportunities to see the wagon ruts left from the thousands of prairie schooners that passed this way in the 19th Century on the way to Utah, California, and Oregon. After stoping at these location in several other states along these pioneer trails and never...

Aug 14, 2012 - chimney rock

We started out of hwy 80 and then we turned off on a 2 lane road, 26. The land changed right away. It was like we were on a big Plateau with lots of big rocks. You could see for miles. We drove for 160 miles and stopped at the Chimney Rock Pioneer RV Park. Another nice park with full hook ups but no restrooms or laundry which is OK with us because we never use either one. The only thing I usually look for a laundry, because that is where the book exchange is. No new books for me today. We are the only people at the camp ground. You stop...

Don't wake me up

Oct 15, 2011 - Chimney Rock, Bayard Nebraska

This was one of the landmarks which guided the wagon trains in the right direction after their great 600 mile trek over the great plains toward the Rocky Mountains. Apparently there are all kinds of names, dates and personal information scratched into the rock on Chimney Rock as well. The Native Americans also left their hieroglyphics on these outcroppings. We were not allowed access to the rock...it is being protected from further damage and unnecessary erosion.

On The Road Again!

Aug 17, 2011 - Scotts Bluff, Nebraska

We left Glenwood Springs Monday around noon and drove to Denver. There we had dinner with POG friends Jim and Chris and spent the night at a WalMart. Tuesday we left Denver late and drove a short distance to the Wyoming Visitor Center, just outside Cheyenne and stayed in the parking lot there. This was a planned stop for fuel for the bus and gas for the car. $3.709 for diesel and $3.299 for gas. Eat your heart out California!!! Next day we drove to Bayard, NE and checked into the Pioneer Crossing Campground. Arriving early gave us plenty of...

Jun 22, 2011 - Bayard, NE Temp 83

We decided to get off the Interstate today and take one of America's byways. It was still a pleasant 70 degrees when we left this morning and still very breezy. Bob said the wind was still strong as far as driving the RV all day. But the temp did not stay at 70. By the time we stopped for lunch, it was easily up in the 80 degrees. We were going to hit a Denny's at Fling J's for lunch, but there was no place to park the RV, so we continued on down the road until we found a rest stop and had tuna fish sandwiches instead. Not so bad. Once we...

Oct 2, 2010 - Is This The One?

Saturday, October 2, 2010-Bayard, Nebraska Yesterday was a day of worry. Our ten year old Greyhound, Lady, had started limping a few days ago. We thought that she had twisting something or broke a toe. She refuses to use the stairs into the camper and just jumps the two and a half foot height, both in and out. Broken toes are very common in Greyhounds, as a breed, but we have never experienced one. As this past week went by, Lady’s limp became worse and worse so we took her to a local vet, recommended by the owners of the campground. The...

Sep 27, 2010 - Long Term Plans

Monday, September 27, 2010--Bayard Nebraska Debbie and I are already talking about our summer trip next year! I guess the “hitch itch” (Urge to travel) is still deeply ingrained in us. We are now just starting south for the winter and looking forward to next summer already! When we retired, we planned to make a series of “loops” from the south to north and move the loop westward each year until we have seen the entire country. I guess that is still the general plan, but as always, is open to change. This summer I have started to lose my...

Monday, September 20, 2010--Custer State Park We went up to Custer State Park today to visit. We considered camping in the park while we were in the area, but they only had electric at the campgrounds. No water, no sewer. So we stayed at the private park mentioned before, just outside the park. When we checked in at the ranger station to receive a car pass, the ranger gave us a map and pointed out where, on the park roads, the bison where reported to be seen. We went around an eighteen mile loop to observe the wildlife. We sure saw some! As...

Sep 7, 2010 - Getting Ready To Move

Monday, September 6, 2010--Chmney Rock--Bayard Nebraska The weather is not that great today. Strong winds coming across the plains and so far, the wind is steady at 20 MPH with gusts as high as 31 MPH. Another cold front is passing by and the sky is overcast. Strong winds all day and the chance of thunderstorms later. We could even get a light frost tonight. Frost? Looks like we need to get moving! Happy Labor Day. I just hope that this is not a harbinger of the near future. We sure would like a nice fall, weather wise, until we head south....

Sep 4, 2010 - Door Is Fixed

Friday, September 3, 2010--Chimney Rock--Bayard Nebraska Well I have seen it all! Yesterday afternoon, five, yes five, identical rental class “C” motor homes pulled in. Class “C” for non campers’ looks like a van front end with the camper part in the rear. Speaking with these folks later, we found out that they were five couples from the United Kingdom, here in the states for six weeks to see the U.S.A. We had a very nice chat and I thoroughly enjoyed the “English” accents. Last night we met at the store with Laura and Joe for supper of...

Sep 2, 2010 - Labor Day Soon.

Tuesday, August 31, 2010--Chimney Rock-- Bayard Nebraska Cooler weather!! YEA! For the next few days we will have high’s in the 70’s to low 80’s and low at night in the 50’s. Perfect! At our present spot, there is always a light breeze which makes it even nicer. The windows and doors are open. No A/C running, just cool breezes. In our first year of retirement, in 2006, we were in Maine on Labor Day. After Labor Day the weather, along with the geese, went south. It turned cold and rainy! It was as if someone said “summers over” on Labor Day...

Aug 30, 2010 - A Good Deal?

Sunday, August 29, 2010--Chimney Rock--Bayard Nebraska Yes, we are still here. The good news is that our new door may arrive one week earlier than planned. The next few paragraphs are a RANT As a result of our staying in one place for more than a month, I have been doing more than my usual amount of time watching TV. As you know, we use satellite TV and do not get “local” channels, so some of this may not apply to your particular situation. We only get national aired ads. I cannot believe the STUPIDITY of some of these commercials. The...
