Aug 2, 2018 - Yellowstone and Grand Teton

We just finished a week at Yellowstone National Park. Actually we finished a week at Henry's Lake State Park in Idaho. About 20 minutes from the west entrance to Yellowstone. Henry's Lake SP is a beautiful State Park. There were mountains on all sides of us. Our space was almost directly on the lake. The first evening we arrived we were educated about bears. We decided to upgrade our bear spray. The neatest thing about Henry's Lake was the wind. Because of the mountains size and location, strong winds would kick up fast. We were sheltered...

Sep 13, 2016 - Whitefish and Glacier Park

We drove from Spokane to Whitefish, Montana. We passed through 50 miles of Idaho. This was not the Idaho that we remembered from 2008. Here in the north were no barren moon-like landscapes. Instead well well kept houses and organic farms. Again our route took us on one of America's hundred best drives on well maintained and empty roads through scenic valleys and alongside spectacular lakes. We came within 6 miles of the Canadian border, saw deer on several occasions though no more elk and no bears. We drove one stretch of 80 miles without...

Sep 2, 2016 - Waterton Lakes NP, Alberta, Canada to Whitefish, MT (Glacier NP)

Today we headed back to the states. We all love our USA. The ride from Waterton Lakes to Glacier NP took us through some beautiful northern Montana country. The day started out cloudy and rainy so we didn't get to see many of the mountain tops in Glacier until almost half way through the park. So plans are to come back tomorrow. But when the weather finally decided to cooperate, what beautiful country side we did see. We went through several tunnels and stopped at 4 waterfalls. Our final stop was Lake McDonald lodge to look at the...

Jun 27, 2016 - June 26 - June 27 Eureka to Whitefish, MT

Greetings from one of the most beautiful locations yet!! Whitefish Montana and I love love love it here!!!! Let me take you back a few days and tell you how we got here! Now that I think about it, it was only yesterday we arrived!!! June 26 - Woke up in Eureka, MT with blue sky and sunshine!! The heavy dew on the tent was as wet and soaking as if we had been in an all night rain storm! Even the underside of the rainfly was dripping, just from the condensation as we snored our way thru another night!! Every day holds a learning experience...

Sep 20, 2015 - Gratitude

I arrived in Whitefish after another day riding into a bit of head wind. The worst, scariest road of the entire tour was Highway 93's last four or five miles into Whitefish. Little or no shoulders. Crumbling asphalt. Plenty of traffic. Sharp ups and downs. But I am here, intact. I am thankful to be here. Three years ago this month I had a bladder stone removed. The procedure, going through the urethra, irritated my prostate. I had infection and other problems. My prostate finally swelled to the point where I could not pee. I had to wear a...

Sep 19, 2015 - Good deeds punished

I'm about a day from finishing in Whitefish, assuming I can ride 55 miles tomorrow. That should be possible, as I eked out 60 plus yesterday. Last week, I pulled over to a viewpoint near Saw Summit. A day rider pulled up from the opposite direction. She stopped to take a photo with her smart phone. I coasted over and offered to take her picture. She was happy to hand me her phone. I was straddling my bike and had difficulty lining up a shot. I decided to dismount. As I swung my leg over the top tube, my foot got caught between the top tube...

Jul 13, 2015 - Up the Big Mountain

Monday July 13, 2015 After we were treated to a fabulous breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and bacon, we decided to tackle Big Mountain. This time, we were going up the hard way. That of course means a hike. This is hard enough for us adults. Jackson however was alternately happy, and really unhappy all the way up. During the course of the hike, he asked a good question. Why are we doing this? A good question because this is what we seem to be doing an awful lot of these days. The answer of course is that we want to reach goals. To find...

Jul 12, 2015 - Neighborly Days

Sunday July 12, 2015 We met our neighbors today. Not neighbors from our campground. Neighbors from Altamonte Springs. Mike, Sheryl and the boys… Christian and Jackson. When we found out that they would also be here for their summer vacation, we decided to meet up for a horseback ride in Glacier. After our ride, we returned with them to their over the top excellent rental ski condo in Whitefish. The place has 4 floors, tons of rooms (we each got one) and a huge great room. They treated us to lunch and dinner, and we went up Big Mountain the...

Sep 20, 2013 - Observation #3 - Our American Indian Heritage

Observations on Whitefish, Montana By mid-day of our third day of the train trip the Empire Builder track carves a graceful curve with the village of Whitefish nestled in that bounded space. The surrounding plains create an environmental setting that underscores how far the decedents of the original American Indian plains tribes have fallen behind the mainstream of the 21st Century nation. There is an obvious separation between the two parts that the ribbons of highway or train tracks cannot erase and Whitefish painfully points this...

May 20, 2013 - Whitefish, MT and Glacier National Park

As we were heading to Canada the next day, we headed to Whitefish, MT to be closer to the border. Whitefish is a beautiful little town with about 7,000 people. It had a vibrant 4 block downtown with lots of shops, restaurants and pubs. If you could shorten the winter, this would be a nice place to live. While there, we drove to Glacier National Park. As the road “Driving to the Sun” was not open yet, we never got to experience the beauty of the park that you hear so much about. Guess we will do this the next time we are in Montana. We did...

Jul 29, 2012 - More

7/23 Made an overnight stop in Cranbrook, BC to meet up with our friends the Thomson’s, to see where they grew up and met. Canada has the most beautiful Parks, wildlife, rivers and lakes but not sure how you can live there it is terribly expensive, i.e. lunch is about what we would pay for a nice dinner out at home. 7/24-28 Headed back to the good old USA, small entry crossing, no issues; destination Whitefish, Montana. Garth’s sister lives in Whitefish and she has kept up busy, busy; they had us to dinner in their home upon our arrival....

Jul 9, 2012 - Big Mountain Resort, Whitefish, Montana

Today, we drove up north a little bit to the town of Whitefish for a little tourist type stuff. They have a neat donwtown area, chock full of restaurants and bar/saloons, as well as the usual t-shirt and souvenir stores. We drove a little further to Whitefish Mountain Resort on Big Mountain. Apparently, this is a great ski area in the winter. But, they have also made it into a summer destination as well. There are 2 ski lifts operating during the summer months. One takes you part way up to an Alpine Sled area and another 15 minute long...
