Friday was basically a zero day. Other than some tinkering and cleaning, we used the marginal weather as an excuse to do not very much...sometimes we need these days. Saturday was a long day as we were out of bed at 7:30 and before 9:00 we were headed back onto GttSR and toward Logan Pass for a hike day in less than desirable weather; in fact the ickiest hiking day of our stay here so far. We made it to Logan Pass with the hopes of doing a secret hike we had heard about, the Triple Falls Trail, but that fell apart pretty quickly. As we made...

We awoke to pretty yucky, but at least not rainy, skies Tuesday morning so we decided to give it some time and see how things developed and that was a good choice. By noonish the clouds started to thin out a bit so Jerry and Sharon met us at the campground and we headed off into the park to do some lookin’ around and opted to save the GttSR for Wednesday’s better forecast. We hit a few spots by the lake and river like Sacred Dancing Cascades and McDonald Falls, then a quick snoop around the Lake McDonald Lodge, which is conveniently located...

Friday was a go-to-the-big-city day. For Michele’s birthday she bought herself a spa day in Whitefish...she got her nails all gussied up and a massage. Me? I played errand boy in Kalispell. A haircut, Taco Bell, Lowe’s, Walmart, Costco and then Chick-fil-A (for a gallon of sweet tea to go, not another lunch) then I picked her up and we shared a run through Safeway for some groceries on the way home. We had some iffy weather early in the day on Saturday so we waited it out till noonish and as things cleared up we decided another hike was in...

Wednesday was a do-not-much kind of day, but we both still logged over 10,000 steps which earns us more ice cream...well, today it earned us a huckleberry shake...even before we got all our steps in. We had to drop something off at the post office in “town” so we walked from the house to there, grabbed our reward shake and headed back toward home with a detour thrown in. We had heard that there is a golf course just northwest of us so we sauntered that direction. As far as golf courses go it doesn’t look all that impressive, but the...

We had heard from my brother in Billings that the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora or as I call them, the Aurora Boring Alice, were going to be visible in Montana Saturday and Sunday nights. As this has been a bucket list item for both of us, we toughed it out and about midnight Saturday we headed back into the park and up the Camas Road to find a pull out and take our chances in the super dark Montana skies. Shortly after finding a spot and letting our eyes adjust, we were able to make out a...

Our Tuesday drive was through some beautiful country on U.S. 2 east from Moyie Springs to Kalispell, Montana then a short bypass around town, followed by a turn north onto U.S. 93, then a turn back onto U.S. 2 at Whitefish and on to West Glacier. We got set up at the new – just opened in July – West Glacier RV Park & Cabins and as the lovely wife did some laundry, I took off to a hardware store and car wash in nearby Columbia Falls. That, I’m embarrassed to say, was how our day ended. Wednesday we slowly got our act together and about 11:30...

Today, we move to West Glacier. We stop to get gas. A fellow traveler asks if we have been to Yaak. “Which route did you take? We started up there with our rig. The road got so narrow, we turned around and came back.” It was narrow. We take Route 2 out of town. We have enjoyed our Libby stay. We retrace our steps to Kalispell. We make a quick stop at the Albertson’s. When we were last here, they were remodeling. We are now here for their Grand Reopening. We continue to West Glacier. We pull into the West Glacier KOA Resort. It is located...

Jul 7, 2018 - Play day for the boys

Today was a play day for the boys. They got to pick what to do. They decided to go to place that had high and low ropes, rock climbing and a big swing into a pond! Susan and I did some shopping and hung out at the campground. The boys and Peter really enjoyed the rope course, both high and low. Elisabeth enjoyed watching and drinking tea! After a few hours at the park they returned to the campground and hit the pool. We had to return our rental car and pick up the dogs.By the time we got back it was dinner time and time to pack up the RVs...

Jul 7, 2018 - Bad selfies

July 7 - about 100 tourist miles, returning to half of 'Going to sun' road but with wide angle camera lens for different shots, and then to Hungry Horse and Columbia Falls to shop. A big challenge camping in trailer is arranging stuff in the refrigerator. Lessons learned: put 'warm' beer cans in upside down for 24 hours to separate them from cold cans. Also, squeeze air out of plastic or cardboard liquid containers to compact them. And take the wine bladder out of box to shape into irregular spot. We decamp on July 8 to continue westering....

Jul 6, 2018 - Going to the Sun Road

Today started out with Peter and I taking the dogs to Doggie Day Care. We had decided they would be better off there than riding all day in the car. The most famous attraction in Glacier National Park is the Going to the Sun Road. Here is a link that explains the road. https://www.visitmt.com/listings/general/scenic-highway/going-to-the-sun-road.html. Though I am not sure that anything can really relate the beauty and terror of the road. It takes about 2-3 hours to drive the 50 miles of the road and most of that is spent on the middle 30...

Jul 6, 2018 - Road trip

-------- Day 4 on map July 6 - 133 tourist miles, nine hours on wicked roads, mostly in park on 'Going to the sun' road (west to east) and MT49 and 2 back to Essex campground; wow, pictures will never do them justice. Very crowded but we were able to stop and gawk and take hundreds of photos. Mountain goats were incredible maneuvering on a 75 degree rock wall. Prairie dogs were pretty tame at lodge on McDonald lake.more pics next time, limited to 10.

Jul 5, 2018 - West Glacier Montana

Today we drove along Flathead Lake from Polson through Kalispell and on to our campground at West Glacier. The drive along the lake is really lovely. Deep blue water and snow covered mountains and not a lot of people. Since most of the lake is located on an Indian reservation, development is minimal and use is limited. Peter lobbies to stop and fish, but we push on. Our campground is located just outside the entrance to Glacier National Park and is actually the highest rated KOA in America. There is a lot for the boys to do and we spend the...
