Today we drove south from Missoula along the Bitterroot River in the scenic and historic Bitterroot Valley. We found by chance the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is surrounded by the spectacular Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountain Ranges and provides habitat for migratory birds (235 species) and a variety of wildlife. After stopping by the visitor center and viewing herons nesting in a tree we took the Kenai Nature Trail. The trail meanders through meadows and wetlands and was a wonderful walk.
