Pompey's Pillar is a Lewis and Clark landmark on the lower Yellowstone River that I wanted to see. Capt. Clark carved his name and the date in the sandstone here and it is still visible. L&C kept meticulous journals which were largely forgotten until the 100th anniversary celebration of the expedition starting around 1900. The journals allowed historians to precisely trace the exact steps of the expedition, but by this time all evidence of the expedition was erased by weather and time!
