Oct 12, 2012 - World Bicyclist Salva's Journey

Fw: from Colombia‏ 9/30/12 From: salva rguez Subject: from Colombia I am in Colombia, happy, enjoying this lovely country of beautiful sceneries, rough roads, excellent coffee and no-tourism. Wonderful. Also I arrive in the Andes right at the beginning of the rainy season, so my expectations about the 'páramos' (highlands) are wet, wet, wet. Fortunately, Vaude, the german outdoor company, sent me here a very generous set of panniers and equipment to make myself waterproof again, and warmer. When cycling in the mountains, it is much...

Sep 28, 2012 - Smokey road-Idaho to Montana

It’s been a relaxing (dull) 30 days here in Grangeville, ID… and it’s finally time to move on. I wish I could say we were sorry to leave the “smoking section” of the United States, but we’re looking forward to some fresh air after breathing smoke from some 15 wildfires for the last two weeks. Another downer: A couple of days ago, the Wi-Fi service here at the campground went out… and we’re starting to feel withdrawal symptoms from the lack of internet as well. We're ready for some scenery too... my hiking boots, and camera have cobwebs on...

Sep 15, 2012 - Missoula, Montana

We were packed up and ready to roll early this morning. We had a 9:30 appointment at Camping World. We got there a little early and they took our RV right in. They changed the oil and filters and put in the new batteries. We left happy with the work, but our wallet was down a bit over $1000.00. We drove through parts of Washington, then Idaho and arrived in Montana just before dark. Wow, what a beautiful drive!! We are boondocking in a parking lot near Missoula and will complete our short drive tomorrow to our campground. We did not want to...

Sep 10, 2012 - Antifreeze

Sept. 10, 2012 Considered staying in Jellystone Campground, but after driving around Missoula in the smoke, checked into a motel to get out of the smokey air for the night. It was better this morning but you could still smell the fires. Then a front came through and blew it to the southeast. You could at least see the lake shore lines on the mountains this morning. We also had checked the weather forecast for our likely route and decided we needed to winterize the Casita water lines. So, off to Walmart where we purchased and added...

Summer Trip 2012

Sep 9, 2012 - Smoke

Sept. 9, 2012 We got up a little later than usual but also lost an hour moving to Mountain Time, so we got a late start.  As we drove into Missoula, the smoke from forest fires got worse and worse.  Our target campground was in the wrong direction, toward the fires, so we decided to stay in Missoula.  Which, of course, let John have lots of racquetball time.   The wind has changed with a front moving through, so the air should clear up some for tomorrow. No biking in this stuff and no hope of seeing ancient lake shore markings on the...

Summer Trip 2012

Aug 24, 2012 - Missoula, Montana

When we left Glacier, I had to get a couple more pics of the great scenery that we had had when we first arrived. Once on the road, there wasn't any events to report. We had to go out of the park and drive completely around because vehicles over 21 feet cannot drive through the park. We could have cut a couple of hours off of our travels by going through the park but not in this rig. We stayed the night in Missoula at the local Walmart. There were many, many motorhomes, trailers, 5th wheels, etc., all coming out of the park and spending the...

Aug 20, 2012 - Day 118, relaxation day at Missoula

Day 118, Monday, August 20, 2012 I lied. The train tracks are on top of the hill right behind us. They don’t blow their whistles here and they are not so loud. But one came through at 2:00 this morning with some really screechy brakes. The internet problem apparently relates to having Vista on our computers. The systems don’t play well with each other. This is not the first RV Park that has said that. We stayed in Missoula another day. They say back in the ice ages, this area used to be a 2,000 foot deep glacial lake and that over a...

Aug 19, 2012 - Day 117, drive to Missoula

Day 117, Sunday, August 19, 2012 The first train came through before 6:00 this morning. Several more followed soon after. The backside of the RV Park is very quiet when you get away from the highway and train tracks. We just got screwed on our spot. She said it was the only one open. We had a discussion about heading over to the ocean for our remaining time but decided to stick to the plan. We headed south again toward Sandpoint but turned off at Highway 200 headed east. The road followed the shore of Lake Pend d’Oreille and the ever...

Aug 8, 2012 - at Missoula MT; 16/204

120808-Wed-64806-Today we ended at 64818, started at 64806 miles, for total miles today of 12. Today we got the generator fixed, both the new fuel pump and the new circuit breaker and the AC seems to work fine on the generator. The back ladder is breaking, so we re-did the bike and used some duct tape on the ladder. We had lunch at McDonald’s. We took no pictures today. We also did laundry this morning. We had leftovers for dinner and just got back from having ice cream.

Aug 1, 2012 - Missoula, Mt. and Home!

The final leg of our trip took us on a speedy trip back to Minnesota...only missed one toll booth, which we had to go online to pay. We had a short stay in Rochester meeting our new renters and getting some things squared away at their place and picking up our "fuel efficient" car at Janie's in Owatonna. Since our house was still being rented we made a trip to Montana to catch up with Ben and Ashlyn and do some work on that house. Unique event: * On our way to Missoula we took a "short-cut" out of Billings which would take us through...
