Aug 6, 2019 - Helena, Montana

What a busy six weeks we have just completed! When we left Olympia, we went to: Newport, Washington Our primary purpose here was to visit with Sharon’s cousins Kris (and Richard) and Mark (and Teresa). While there, we also met with Sharon’s high school friends Carolyn (and Bob), Nova Jo, and Sherry. And no visit to this area would be complete without hiking around Gamlin Lake Recreation Area – Sharon’s grandparents’ former homestead where she spent several years in her early youth. Ocean City, Washington We have a membership park here where...

Jun 26, 2019 - Helena, Montana

Of course the weather warmed up today just as we are leaving the Yellowstone area. It is supposed to be in the 70s all week in Yellowstone. We are driving towards Helena, Montana but not on the interstate. The Hwy we are on follows the Madison river and we are seeing so many fishermen in this area as well as all areas of rivers as well as in the park. Last nights rodeo was really fun. Obviously it was smaller than some other rodeos so we sat close to the arena and the horses. The hard part was climbing up into their rickety old bleachers...

Aug 12, 2018 - Lincoln Road

/// August 9, 2018 A Travel Day: We finally hoped to escape Missoula. With a trip of only about 130 miles, we delayed our departure to 10:00 A.M. Our route today would take us east on I-90 to Jct of US 12 and then over MacDonald Pass to Helena. The road conditions were good, traffic was moderate and we made just one stop to kick the tires, etc. We arrived at the Lincoln Road RV Park just before 1:00 P.M. Check-in was very thorough and we moved onto our site to set up camp. We plan to stay here for five nights and we are now back on our...

Apr 9, 2018 - Helena, Montana

Well another day, another state! We had a great travel day with sunny skies, no wind, dry roads, and traffic was moderate to heavy at times. Idaho was without snow but the further north we travelled we could see white but not in the ditches. Mel was happy to find diesel at $2.98 a gallon at Dillon. That beat the $3.05 and $3.19 we paid at our previous fill ups. Oh well, I think we will have sticker shock once we get home so we will enjoy those prices. The majority of our trip was on interstate 15 but we took a few different highways from...

Jul 23, 2017 - Visiting Helena

We slept in this morning then did a few errands and had lunch. After that we took a tour of Helena which is the State Capital of Montana. We had seen the Capitol Building from the highway in other travels and wanted a close up view. It is really a pretty building and the flowers out front are stunning. Next we drove on downtown to see the original Governor's Mansion. Along the way, were many of the beautiful old homes from yesteryear. While taking pictures of the Governor's Mansion, we could see two spires not far away and went to...

Jul 22, 2017 - On to Helena

Since we had a short trip today, we took our time getting ready. Bill is feeling some better so we think we will complete the rest of our trip with a few changes to accommodate the week that we didn't stay in Alberta. We headed down I-15. When we got to Great Falls we stopped for lunch. As we were leaving Denny's we could see an airplane participating in an Air Show. We sat and watched for a few minutes then headed on down the road. Soon we were in the Belt Mountain Range with the Missouri River running through. Couldn't help but take...

Jul 18, 2017 - Last day in Helena

Tuesday we visited the two campgrounds at Hauser Lake, the closest one to Helena, which is on the Missouri River. The campgrounds are Black Sandy and White Sandy and look like nice recreational areas. We did a little more sightseeing downtown, to see some things we missed. Note: There are several more pictures of things in the Montana Oddities book. Then we had a last dinner with the kids that night and hit the road Wednesday, July, 19th for Idaho Falls. I mentioned before that I’d learned some more about the Missouri River. It actually...

Jul 17, 2017 - Helena Tour

As I said, the bartender was mixing generously, so I didn’t feel too well on Monday morning. We went to Steve’s for another good breakfast, but it wasn’t really morning…we caught them before they close at two though. I didn’t report much for several days in Helena, because it would have been boring, but I do want to make note that we went to Wal-Mart again. This would be Wal-Mart visit #5 for the trip We took the little train tour of Helena, it only cost $7.50 pp, so we saw all the landmarks…it was a little too fast for pictures, but we...

Jul 16, 2017 - Birthday Party

The 60th Birthday Party was catered at the Country/Golf club they belong to. It was a nice, casual affair with great food, good Montana brews, and later the bartender was mixing generously. The tables were inside, but we spent much of our time outside on the patio.

Jul 15, 2017 - Mechille and Pete's house

We're here in Montana to celebrate our son-in-law Pete's 60th birthday. His daughters and their kids and husbands and cousins and an old high school buddy all came in from different parts of the country for the party. They had a get-together at the house on Saturday. They're going to build a "retirement" home (he's not ready for a few years though), just up the street from their present house. We walked over to see the property, although we drive by it to get to their house. Same mountain, but the view is very different.

Jul 13, 2017 - Deer Lodge & Butte, Montana

Today we went to Deer Lodge…the Frontier Museum there had a lot of old rifles, pistols and derringers, gambler’s paraphernalia, and lawman’s tools from the old west. There was also a toy museum with a big electric train setup, and an odd doll collection that included something very interesting. Someone had assembled about 20 or 30 Princess Diana dolls, each wearing a different outfit to match a picture of Diana in it, placed next to the doll. We skipped the tour of the old Montana State Prison and the antique car collection. We did however...

Jul 12, 2017 - Helena continued

Our first day in Helena we found a great little place to go out to breakfast…Steve’s Café. You wouldn’t think that if you ordered a short stack, two eggs, sausage, and hash browns that you would need to get a box. Or if you ordered a bacon and cheese omelet and hash browns that you would need a box. We got another whole breakfast out of the leftovers…and I’d like to add that this is Montana, so I ordered Huckleberry Pancakes, yum. They also have Huckleberry syrup, today we had a Huckleberry Ice Cream cone, you can buy Huckleberry Jam...
