Jul 13, 2015 - Stories to Tell

There were plenty of chores to do this morning. We have to stay on top of cleaning and our messes since we are in such tight quarters. Gary always has plenty of systems to check each day before we get on the road, too. While I was outside repotting some houseplants, I had a visit from a boy about age 10 or so and his yellow Lab retriever, Trudy. He was happy to tell me all about her. He said he and his family were on their way home after visiting with family members that had just lost an eighteen-month-old child to a brain tumor. Again, I...

Sep 18, 2014 - Columbus, MT

We traveled I-90 across southern Montana through some absolutely gorgeous country. The fall colors were spectacular and traveling through the mountains was breathtaking. We passed through where the Madison, Jefferson, and Gallatin rivers form the Missouri River. The headwaters of the Missouri are right near the freeway. At Livingston, MT we picked up the Yellowstone River. My only reason for commenting on this is the fact that I didn't realize how big this river actually is. It is the longest free-flowing river in the lower 48 states....

Sep 5, 2014 - DAY 13 in Montana

107.6 miles, 16.7 average, 3700 feet climbing. We went over 1000 miles today so only around 2700 left to go. Wow that's a lot and 41 more days. Today started out cold at 39 degrees but ended up at about 70 and sunny skies. I really bundled up but took most of the extra clothing off. There are three different vehicles on the road to provide support and I have learned to put my day bag on the van driven by the masseuse as she winds up helping the first groups of riders. I was going to wear my heavy gloves today but I brought two left gloves -...

Jul 18, 2013 - You're FIRED!

It was not easy but today I finally had to fire Julia from the navigation position. Even though its her car and her move. The question is how many times can a navigator chose east when we are heading west??? Honestly, you would have done the same...So stop judging! She took it pretty well (whew!) until I hired a new navigator (ugh!). It was a bit ugly...

Thelma & Louise

Jul 17, 2013 - Visiting Friends

We took our time this morning. It was only 69 degrees when we left our campsite at 11:00. It's another cloudy day, with a chance of scattered showers. We are heading south west into Billings, MT. to meet up with Steve Church, an old family friend of Lisa's. We'll be spending tonight at his ranch in Columbus, Mt. We met Steve at his office and had a nice visit, learning about his seed business and catching up on old times. It turned out to be a beautiful day and as we followed Steve to his ranch the temperatures were in the low 80s. Steve...

Jun 27, 2012 - Columbus, MT and Atlas Bar

We found a better campground west of Billings and within walking distance to Columbus, MT. The owner told us about things to do in the area and we are close enough to Billings to go there on a day trip. We walked into the small town (pop 1800) of Columbus this afternoon...hard to believe it is the county seat! The town started as a stagecoach stop along the Yellowstone River and has several old buildings in town on the historical register. One was The Atlas Bar, which has made a few off the beaten path books because of the many stuffed...

Summer 2012

Aug 7, 2011 - Columbus, MT

Today was a short travel day – 110 miles from Garryowen, MT to Columbus, MT. This was probably the most dramatic change in landscape in one day that we have encountered so far. We left the rolling, grassy hills around the Little Bighorn battlefield, and before we knew it the snow-capped Beartooth Mountains started appearing before us. It was 88 degrees when we left at 11:30 this morning, and now we are seeing snow in the mountains ahead of us! We decided that we would go out to dinner tonight, and the campground manager suggested a place...

2011 Northwest Trip

Sep 22, 2010 - One fall night in Montana

. Well, we’re back on the road again. If you have been reading along throughout the summer, you would already know we had an exceptional four-and-a-half months at Red Rock RV Park and have had the opportunity to see many long time friends and meet many new travel buddies. We will miss this beautiful area and our good friends…we will return, and we will see most, if not all, of these good folks down the road. We watched a stunning sunrise this morning as we completed packing and hitching up our home on wheels. We said so long to our...

Jun 2, 2010 - Moving into Montana

Time to move on. We left Medora early today and moved on to Columbus, Montana. We stopped at a rest area to have lunch - the view was beautiful - be sure to see the picture. The landscape was very similar to North Dakota until we were about 10 miles west of Billings, MT - then WOW there were the Beartooth Mountains - what a spectacular site. The mountains are still very snow covered. We have a view of the mountains from our campsite. There was a Cabela's in Billings - of course we had to stop there so Dave could look around a bit. Sage and...

North to Alaska-2010

Sep 13, 2009 - Through Big Sky Montana

Another great travel day, it is so nice to be on the road again. We love seeing this country. Stopped for lunch along the road and the river and watched the fishermen float by. We saw lots of mountains, big sky, and crossed the Continental Divide again. Found more places to come back and see again and stopped for the night at another “almost free”(they ask for a donation) site we have stayed at before along the Yellowstone River. This was a Historic stop for me as it was the First time I have backed the rig into a parking spot-granted it...

year5-Here we go

May 27, 2009 - Columbus, MT

Oh, my. . .today we drove and drove and drove. It was only 7 hours, but there was not much to look at. We did see a couple deer, antelope, horse, cow, prairie dog, and road kill. Other then that, it was mostly up and down hills; plain hills! Did I mention that it is 88 degrees!

Aug 25, 2008 - Columbus MT (Updated)

An easy 6 hour drive from Missoula to Columbus MT. Nancy and I have now stayed in Columbus Ohio, Columbus Texas and Columbus MT. This very small town has a few things going for it. It is home of the 307 grill which has the most expensive hamburger outside Alaska and Canada. Our two hamburgers, coffee and glass of wine were 38 dollars. The good part there was no TAX Columbus is also home of the Montana Silversmith company and their only outlet store. I love their belt buckles so we made a stop. We bought 4 belt buckles, 2 custom made knives...
