Jun 13, 2018 - Glacier National Park

Another great drive to northern Montana. We traveled through primarily upper plains land filled with cattle, sheep, lots of deer and antelope, and beautiful mountains on all sides. The weather has been pretty cool for the last several days, but we have been warm and toasty. We went to Glacier National Park yesterday only to find that only a very small section of the park was open. They are still plowing snow in the upper elevations, so we only got to see a very small part of the park. We may try to stop back through on our return trip for a...

(Note: Click on "View all photos", double click on first photo to enlarge photo to size of screen, then click on "Slideshow, 5 sec." to automatically advance photos). Monday, August 15, 2016 - We left the campground at 7:45 a.m. this morning in order to get to Glacier National Park shortly after it opened at 8:00 a.m. It gets really congested, the later in the day that you arrive and is harder to find parking areas throughout the park. This was our second day in the park; we had driven over on Friday of last week and took the free shuttle...

Saturday, August 13, 2016 - We spent the day touring the area south of Columbia Falls, known as Flathead Valley and Flathead Lake. Flathead Lake is the largest national lake in western United States and is said to be great for fishing. It is 28 miles long, 15 miles wide and 300 feet deep. The Flathead Valley and lake gets its name from the Salish (Flathead) Indians who inhabit the...

Aug 11, 2016 - Columbia Falls, MT

Wednesday, August 10, 2016 - We left Hardin, MT about 10:00 a.m. this morning and continued driving I-90 West, heading for Glacier National Park, MT. The temperatures are staying in the 70s and we've had beautiful weather so far. If all goes well, we'll be in Columbia Falls, MT shortly after noon tomorrow. We weren't certain how soon the weather would get bad in MT, so thought we should drive straight to Glacier National Park, stay for a week, and then work our way South again and sight see along the way back. Our plan was to leave earlier...

May 22, 2016 - Glacier National Park West

We wanted to see Glacier National Park from both the east and west entrances. There is a wonderful drive that goes through the park and up to the highest peak called Going to the Sun Road that is spectacular, but cannot be driven with the RV, only the car. We decided to drive to the west side of the park and stay in Columbia Falls, Montana. There are three scenic rides we did from our base at Columbia Falls RV Park. We entered the park at Apgar Visitor Center and learned that the road was open only to Avalanche Creek about 13 miles, so we...

Alaska Trip 2016

Sep 7, 2015 - Glacier National Park

Drove to Columbia Falls RV Park just 15 miles from the Glacier National Park. Set up camp and then drove to the park entrance to the welcome center. The next day we left early, drove to Glacier National Park, parked our car and took a shuttle through the park and on the Road to the Sun pass. We stopped at Logan Pass and hiked up to Hidden River. It was a cold and blustery day and we weren't prepared for it. It was worth the hike to see the view. We saw a few Mtn. Goats and Big Horn Sheep. There was a bear siting just before we got there....

Aug 21, 2015 - more pics

We had one good day to hike. We went up to the Granite Lake Chalet, 4.4 miles up over 2200 ft gain. Frank said that is a 10% grade! Hardest hike we have done, but absolutly gorgeous views. Then the smoke really came in from all the fires over the north west. The road to Canada from the east side of the park is closed so we are leaving on Monday to head to Canada early from the west side of Glacier. This cuts out Waterton Lakes for us to camp there but we may be able to do a day trip. Hopefully, we will be far enough north to be in clear...

We have had a busy week here! I got to play a member/guest at White Horse CC...very swanky! Then we played Whitefish CC the next day. We went on a nice hike in Glacier, despite the smoke from all the fires. Today we went south to the National Bison Refuge and spent 3 hours looking at animals with Marianne. Great fun! We are looking forward to another week of hiking and golf here in the cooler weather!

Jul 31, 2015 - Glacier National Park

We have been in Glacier National Park area since Sunday. We arrived in Kalispell, got the rental car, set up and made our first drive into Glacier. The Going to the Sun Road has been closed at Big Bend, about 3 miles below Logan Pass, due to the fire on the east side of the park. We had mostly cloudy skies and the threat of rain on Sunday afternoon, but we still had the panoramic views along the Going to the Sun Road to give us our first highlight views. We also stopped for a tasting of local whiskey at Glacier Distilling in Coram. GD is a...

Jun 26, 2015 - Columbia Falls, MT - Columbia Falls RV Park

There isn't a whole to report on this entry. We did get some last minute shopping for a few items that are harder to find in Canada. We also did some deep cleaning of the Mothership for the first time this trip. Part of our preparations to entering Canada has been making sure we have used up all of the foodstuffs that Canada doesn't want us to bring in such as fresh fruit and vegetables as well as they currently have a ban on all poultry products including eggs. So we have been eating a lot of chicken, veggies and fruit recently! We have...

Jun 20, 2015 - Columbia Falls, MT - Columbia Falls RV Park

We have done a bit more touring this week as our time is winding down in Columbia Falls. Tuesday morning we made a trip to the Hungry Horse Dam and Reservoir located just a few miles from Columbia Falls. The dam used a little over three million yards of concrete and is 564 feet high with a width at the base of 330 feet. The reservoir is 34 miles long and has 170 miles of shoreline covering 6,800 surface acres and containing 3.5 million acre-feet of water. It dams the South forth of the Flathead River which generates 428,000 kilowatts of...
