Oct. 3 Beautiful sunrise this morning. We had a few problems with the cigarette lighter yesterday. We use it for the computer and the fridge, we got new fuses, and everything seems to be fine. We are in a valley at the base of the Bitterroot Mountains, Trapper Peak at over 10,000’ if one of these. We are headed down US93 headed to Big Hole National Battlefield. Big Hole is a unit of the Nez Perce National Historical Park and is the site of a fierce and deadly battle between the U.S. Army and families of the Nez Perce, Palouse and Cayouse...

Jul. 27 Big Hole Battlefield, Nez Perce NP, Wisdon, MT; Bannack SP, Bannack, MT; and Coolidge Ghost Town, Coolidge, MT What an interesting day. It didn’t look very promising when we got up this morning. Karl had checked the weather for Butte and it is supposed to rain all morning, but we are heading west on Rt. 1 and south into the mountains on Rt. 43 and Rt. 278 and we don’t know how the weather wiill be there. Aug 2, 2006 - Big Hole National Battlefield

Continuing north from Bannack, I went through Jackson and Wisdom and then west to Big Hole National Battlefield / Nez Perce National Historic Park. The Battle of the Big Hole was a tragic turning point of the Nez Perce War of 1877. The Nez Perce were camped in the Big Hole Valley as they were trying to get ahead of U.S. troops. They were attacked during the early morning before dawn. Many were killed in their tents as they slept. Such a senseless act! I left there feeling sad about how so many treaties have been broken.
