May 17, 2013 - Indianapolis St-Louis

May 15, 2013 - Winter to Summer.....
Okay, it has been 2 weeks since I last posted. The weather has went from winter to summer already. The high was 90 degrees yesterday, and the same is forecast for today. Lots has happened in the last 2 weeks. I'll try to give you the highlights. Jackie won the Texas Hold'em night. His prize was a large ice cream that I enjoyed tremendously..... We made a trip to Arkansas for Jackie to see his cardiologist. The doctor was amazed at his weight loss. Cut back some of his meds. We visited with our dear friends Bill & Kay for an hour or so. Kay...

May 13, 2013 - Onondaga Caves
Left St. Louis today. First stop was Onondaga Caves State Park. Grabbed at quick lunch and then had a 1 1/2 hour tour of the main cave. Very cool, literally. Cave temp is a constant 14 C (57 F). Continued on to Springfield, Missouri intending to stay at Camp Walmart. First one was too noisy and busy so we switched to another Walmart. Much better although we were beside a road so traffic noise bothered us a bit. Listened to the Leaf game again on computer. 570 CHYM in Kitchener. Joe Bowen and Jim Ralph. Excellent commentary, bad result....

May 12, 2013 - Happy Mother's Day-At the Cardinal"s Game
Happy Mother's Day! My present to Marilyn was lunch and then the St. Louis Cardinals against the Colorado Rockies at Busch Stadium. What a great wife! Found out that the Casino ran a shuttle to the ball park but we wanted to be there early so we hopped on the Metro. It stops right outside the stadium. Very easy. Beautiful ball park. Bought tickets. Field level in foul territory just beyond the foul pole on the first base side. Unfortunately in the shade. It was a cool day. High 15 C and a slight wind. Shared nachos for lunch and then later...

May 11, 2013 - Saturday in Higginsville
We found out that the campground's WIFI doesn't work very well, but I have the ability to turn my iPad into a WIFI hotspot with its 4G, so we are still able to play with our tech toys. At breakfast each day, we read the Denver newspaper with our tablets. We also have Dish's Sling, so we can tap into our home DVR and watch live and taped shows. What'll they think of next? We went to a truck stop at our exit this morning after breakfast, and found that they have everything imaginable for truckers there. They even have hats with fake hair (see...

May 11, 2013 - Guerilla Food Truck
Lazy morning. Marilyn did some laundry and I did some research on the internet. Marilyn wanted to go to the Guerilla Food Truck for lunch. She had seen this on The Food Network and was intrigued. This truck is like a mini restaurant and moves to different locations each day. They post their location on their website so we tracked them down. Decided to drive the truck instead of using Metro. Easy 10 minute drive. Marilyn had the Adobo Braised Chicken ( chicken slow cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, bay leaves and peppercorns. Shredded and...

May 10, 2013 - Sweetie Pies at the Mangrove
It's Mothers' Day Weekend so Marilyn gets to choose the activities in St. Louis. Fortunately I have influenced her well. She chose lunch at Sweetie Pies at The Mangrove This is a restaurant featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives ( referred to for the rest of this trip as - DDD ). It features Mississippi cooking served cafeteria style. We used the Metro and then transferred to a bus to get to the restaurant (Day pass is $7.50 each). Simple and quick. Why drive when you can ride. Sweetie Pies was perfect. You line up cafeteria style and...

May 10, 2013 - Higginsville, MO
We decided to drive extra long today, so we could make it east of Kansas City. We are about 50 miles east of KC. This campground is just off of I-70, so it is quite noisy. But we are so used to highway noise, that we barely hear it. And highway noise is much easier to take than train horns! This campground is a nice surprise. We were just looking for a place to rest for a couple of days. This place sits on about 5 acres of grass with woods, trails, and 2 stocked lakes. We just got back from walking the dogs, and Mojo is trying to recover...

May 9, 2013 - A Visit to the Cozy Dog Drive In
Cloudy this morning. Out of the campground by 9:30 and followed old Rte 66 to Pontiac, Illinois. Great small town. Toured the Route 66 Musem. Filled to overflowing with mementos from The Mother Road. Very interesting. Also toured the Pontiac Car Museum. Walked around town looking at a large number of wall murals that were created during a project by The Wall Dogs. After lunch we continued on Rte 66 which soon turned into I-55. Started to rain. Heavy at times so we slowed down. Best thing to do is get in the inside lane behind a truck and...

May 8, 2013 - Red Oak II
Independence, MO. Nostalgic for the simpler way of life he experienced during his early years, in 1987 Lowell Davis began buying the homes and businesses of his beloved Red Oak, MO. He moved them 23 miles to his Fox Fire Farm near Carthage, MO and restored them to their original grandeur - a place now known as Red Oak II. There is a blacksmith shop, where Lowell's great-grandfather practiced his trade, the Feed and Seed Store, the old Phillip's 66 Station which was originally located on old Route 66 near Red Oak, the General Store, a church...
