We decided to stop in Vicksburg on our way north, this city was the site of a major civil war battle that helped the union defeat the south. The union soldiers surrounded Vicksburg and the southern army and bombarded them continuously from May 22nd to July 4th, finally the southern forces surrendered. Taking the city allowed the north control of the Mississippi river.
