Jun 19, 2014 - Springfield, IL

Tuesday, June 17, 2014 Springfield, Chain of Rocks Bridge on Route 66 Seven fifteen and we are off for Lincoln Country. No problems with traffic at all going and coming. It is a 2 ½ hour drive. We drove along the edge of a thunder and lightening storm. We saw lots of lightening flashes in the distance. The storm went east of us. The rest of the day was sunny, hot, and muggy. The first place we looked at in Springfield was the Lincoln Herndon Law Office. Lincoln came to Springfield at about age 27 and left to be President at age 52. When he...

Jun 17, 2014 - Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis and Grant's Farm

Tuesday, June 18, 2014 - Cathedral-Grant's Farm-Grant Historical Site About 9:30 we left for St. Louis to see the inside of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. On the way we Googled what makes a Cathedral and a Basilica. A Cathedral is the home church of the bishop. A Basilica is a status given by the Pope and it is an architectural, historical, or spiritually significant church. Once a church has a Basilica designation it is always a designation. Apparently, you can lose Cathedral status. It took 76 years to complete the tile work at the...

May 26, 2014 - What a difference a day or two can make!!

After deciding that we were all WAY to old to do the driving and camping on the way north, spending 3 nights at the lake made us all believers again! The kids are doing fine now... my leg/back sure settled down and I can walk!!! (but the driving today did set it up a bit. *)*0) It was fun watching kids of all ages going non-stop from 8am til quiet time at 9pm on the 'balloon' and the pool and the dirt track with the peddle carts and the bikes on the roads and the dogs and laughter, etc! Rejuvenating .... Today we drove on to a KOA just...

May 22, 2014 - Since the end is never told….

We pay the teller off in gold In hopes he will come back But he cannot be bought or sold…. Alright, so I didn’t get too much bed rest in Bangkok, about 16 hours or so and it was off to the airport. I decided to fly back to the USA and go visit my Mom (the last few times I talked to her she sounded like she needed a hug - her house, which was destroyed in Super Storm Sandy over 20 months ago was still not finished being rebuilt yet and she’s stressed, rightfully so) and my Dad and the rest of my family. I also figured I'd go visit some...

Apr 16, 2014 - Illinois

Wednesday, April 16, 2014 We did spend an additional two weeks in Mission but Sharon and I were both sick on and off for about ten days. Before leaving the valley we had a chance to visit more with my cousin Bob and Kathy. And we took a ride to Harlingen and took pictures of the murals around downtown. On April 8th we went up to San Antonio to visit with my niece Barb and nephew Kenney. Barbs son Mat made a good dinner for us and we spent the evening with them and Mat’s daughter’s ages 6 years and 20 months. We stayed three nights at Tres...

Mar 5, 2014 - St. Louis, MO - School Trip

Day One: Tracy and I work at Harding Academy of Memphis, in Memphis, TN. A tradition for the seventh grade class is to take a three day trip to St. Louis, MO. Tracy is a seventh grade sponsor and a co-trip leader. I went as a chaperone. Two charter buses transported us safely to St. Louis. On the way up, we stopped at Lambert's to eat lunch. Lambert's is the home of the throwed rolls. The food was good and plentiful. Our first stop in St. Louis was the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, more commonly know as the "Arch." The Memorial is...

October 30 Awoke to darkness and rain at 7:00. Travel day on RTE 64 across KY, IN, IL into MO to west St. Louis. As we passed through Louisville we saw the KFC Arena and Cardinal paraphernalia along with tributes to Muhammad Ali. (Cardinals are playing in Boston tonight.) Arrived at the BW hotel in Kirkwood (suburb of St. Louis) at about 3:00 and got a comfortable room not too far from the gym which is beckoning me! We are going to a...

Oct 15, 2013 - St. Louis Science Center + Bruce & Janet Byrd

On our last day in St. Louis, MO we decided to go see their Science Center. It was a relatively short drive (right next to the Zoo), and was a perfect thing to do on this overcast day! While there, we took in the IMAX movie 'Jerusalem' which was a fantastic look at the city and how all the religious cultures live in harmony within a 1 square mile piece of land! After that we wandered around the entire exhibit, and found a fun area dedicated to Arches. I tried my hand at building one, and then saw a large scale model made out of Lego's of...

Oct 13, 2013 - St. Louis - Gateway Arch & Anheuser Busch Brewery

We traveled from South Dakota to St. Louis, MO, stopping for one night just outside of Omaha, NE to sleep. In St. Louis we stopped at Jeannie's brother Bob & Carol Boast's house for a couple of days. We arrived around 2PM, and were quickly whisked off to see my two favorite attractions - the Gateway Arch and the Anheuser Busch Brewery in downtown St. Louis. When we got to the Gateway Arch, although closed due to the government shutdown, the weather was nice and sunny, and the winds were moderate. So, with the small crowds around, I decided...
