Yesterday, after visiting the Stiegemeirer’s in Staunton, we drove through town to try to find Route 66 which passes through the town. The town was decked out for Saturday’s running of the Tour de Donut, southern Illinois’s version of the Tour de France with a difference. The Tour de Donut was 34 miles long and as with most bike races the best time wins. The difference with this race is that they offer a reduction in race time for each donut you eat along the course. Wednesday morning we left Branson and traveled East toward St. Louis. We decided to stay at Gasconade Hills campground about 100 miles from Branson and about 150 from St. Louis for a few days. Gasconade Hills is a paddle-sport campground that specializes in float trips on the Gasconade River that runs right along to our campsite. It is a little early in the season for canoeing so the campground is fairly deserted but very pretty.
