Jun 2, 2012 - Fun

June 2 Yesterday afternoon we pulled into the Lazy Days Campground in Montgomery City, Missouri, a place where we had happily camped in fall of 2010 when we headed west. So we drove down to Hermann, a small town nearby, hoping to duplicate the excellent German meal we had at the Trapper's Grill when we were here last. It also had the second most amazing dessert I've ever had, a chocolate dugout canoe filled with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. Alas! The Trapper's Grill is up for sale. So we wandered down to the Stone Hill Winery and...

Aug 24, 2011 - Montgomery City, MO. USA

We are at Lazy Day Campground which is a nice little campground off of I-70. We had Bruce and Janie over for dinner (ham, corn on the cob, green beans, and rice and tomatoes). We started out our travels on the northwest tour with having them and Sandra and Larry for dinner so it was good to end our travels with them. Tomorrow they will be leaving us.

Jul 10, 2011 - July 10 & 11 Second Stop

340 Miles this day going through St. Louis. Traffic and road was terrible. Ken & Wanda took great pictures of the Arch. Our stop was at the Lazy Days RV Park and we arrived about 6:00pm. Got set up, walked Muffin, Ken and I went to the pool to get out of the heat (101 degrees all afternoon) and then went to the ice cream social put on by the park. This was before dinner. Right after dinner the exhaustion set in and we retired to our respective trailers to unwind and go to bed. Because we were staying 2 nights, Monday morning was my Sunday...

All is well with us. This was our second straight day of driving nearly 400 miles (we usually drive 250 or less). We were bombarded all day with cicadas. The extreme heat in the central US has brought them out in record numbers. We usually get them in Denver in mid-late July, but they're already in Illinois and Missouri. We've never heard so many of them before - the sound is almost deafening. And they made a complete mess of the windshield. We're about 50 miles west of St. Louis, and have decided to skip the days off, and just keep driving...

Sep 30, 2010 - a day of rest

Day 4 dawned clear, sunny, and cool, a beautiful day! How nice to be able to putter around with a second cup of coffee, and have a real breakfast! Today was tourist day. It was hard to choose between Nostalgiaville, and the Winston Churchill Memorial Museum at Westminster College in Fulton, but I guess we made the right choice! The museum was excellent, interactive displays for children, videos of Churchill’s most famous speeches, as well as a total retrospective of his life. It was an enjoyable 2 hour experience, a compromise between...

Sep 29, 2010 - We've made it to Missouri

Note to self: if you use MS Word instead of the Trip Journal web page to input data, you might not need to re-do the information three times, especially when the campground is have internet connection problems! We woke this morning to 48 degrees, sunny, clear and crisp. It was COLD! Fortunately the trailer furnace works fine. We left Cloverdale at 9:40, headed for Missouri. Neither GPS systems could (or would!) find the campground we were headed to. Fortunately, we practice redundancy x 4, so we still had the Good Sam Camping Book and the...

Howdy from Missouri! It now feels like we are making progress towards the west. We stopped here for the night at Lazy Days Campground. I just took a relaxing dip in the pool. We drove through alot of construction around St. Louis, so it took longer getting here. Ginger is adapting well to her nomad life style. The weather is good, 80's with 50 % humidty. May get rain tonight. We will head out tomorrow... Stay tuned and stay well. Fondly Nancy and Steve

Jun 25, 2009 - (R-V) there Yet???

The day began like any other day of RVing. We woke up! We all got up and went for a jog/walk since we knew we would be in the truck for about seven hours (foreshadow). Upon quick showers and a quicker bowl of cereal, we loaded up and left Nashville around 9 a.m. Our plan was pretty simple; drive 390 miles to Montgomery City, Missouri. We thought we would get there around 3:30 p.m. About 100 miles into the trip we ran into everyone’s friend, Mr. D.O.T. What a great guy. Traffic backed up on I-24 west for about 30 minutes. However, we got by...

Jun 20, 2009 - Third Day

6/20/09: Saturday. Another hot and humid day. Naturally Chris has been fishing much of the time with Ryan and Bennie catching bullfrogs. Today was Kay's time, so we all went to Hermann, MO and visited 3 Wineries. This is a really quaint little town and worth a special visit The kids had a raspberry grape drink at the wine tasting so we bought them a bottle of the stuff, it was so good. There are 15 wineries in this area. We only went to three of them. The Stone Hill Vineyard was opened in 1869 and the Adam Puchton vineyard has been owned by...

Jun 19, 2009 - Second Day Out

6/19/09: Friday. It was so hot and humid I had to take a shower after disconnecting everything and hooking up the trailer. We crossed into Central time at St Louis when we crossed the Mississipi. We got to see the huge Arch in the park. We also crossed the Missouri and Ohio Rivers. Our stop is at the Lazy Days Campground, on I 70 at Exit 170. 345 miles today. The bikes came off the rack at the back of the trailer for riding and then the kids went swimming.

May 28, 2009 - Last days in Missouri

This is a beautiful little campground on the northern end of the Ozark mountains. We will be here two days, then on to Iowa. It is on the side of a hill, but the sites are nicely terraced and level. The owner has many pretty touches around the building and grounds. I was so excited about having Wi/Fi again...but it is so slow that I fell asleep waiting for it to change screens! We had a very nice drive today...stayed mostly on Rte 19. Towns were small . Nice views...often no place to pull over for pictures. I didn't get any pictures...

Apr 14, 2009 - Missouri: A Little History & A Little Americana

We had a beautiful day to drive to Missouri. The only item that really caught our attention on arriving was how Missourians identify many of their roads. Our first clue was when we passed an exit that said it led to the intersection of JJ and J. From there on we passed exits for Z, O, MM and N, plus many others. I did a closer look at a state map and found it was typical for the state. I also found the same letter route in various parts of the state, but they weren’t connected. A route can also change letter names out in the middle of...
