Scott, Louisiana, is near Lafayette, east of Lake Charles. We are staying here in a KOA Kampground, one of the nicest we've visited. This is the heart of Cajun Country. I haven't compared the vicinity on a map of the surrounding bayous and backwaters, but my guess is that the Cable TV program about 'Swamp People' is filmed not far from here. Yesterday we drove a nearly 200 mile loop that took us on the 'Creole Scenic By-Way' through endless vistas of marsh on the one side, with distant ghostly towers of oil platforms out in the Gulf on the...

Jan 19, 2012 - On the Road Again

A day or so ago, as we traveled down the Natchez Trace Parkway through Tennessee, across a corner of Alabama and then left it to drive into rural Mississippi, I took note of our seeing so few people as we traveled through small towns. When we stopped at the 'Coyote Cafe,' what you might call a redneck diner, for lunch, I began to understand. Nearly every man in the cafe was outfitted in 'camo' - camo pants, camo shirts and jackets, camo caps. Could it be that the populations of these towns is greater than might appear at first glance...
