Dec 17, 2017 - Gulfport MS

Sun, 17 Dec: A rainy day on the road... During the wee hours of the morning the long promised rain arrived. It continued most of the morning, sometimes heavy, most times not. Happily it wasn't raining when we awoke and held off while we completed our outside chores and got ready to travel. Bob rolled wheels a few minutes after eight and in short order we were in I 10 eastbound. Early on there was little traffic but as we approached Lafayette it built. We've noticed that drivers in Louisiana seem to be congenitally unable to merge onto an...

Jan 12, 2017 - Gulfport, Mississippi

Well after a rough start to our journey, we've recovered well and are back on the road. Of course, we're all smiles putting on the miles! So it was, out of the Tallahassee RV Park and turned west on I-10. Though the drive of 337 miles to the Naval base at Gulfport, Mississippi was longer than we usually drive we had fun seeing the countryside and views out the window. We stopped here for two nights, giving us a break from the road. Whew ! You'll see pictures of the extra steps that we use for our short stops. They are the Port-A-Steps from...

Apr 28, 2016 - Weather Issues

The weather forecast was ominous when we left yesterday morning leaving Florida and heading for Mississippi. With severe thunderstorms forecasted for last night we opted to park the Phaeton at the America's Besr Value Inn and get a room. It looked like we had been unnecessarily cautious, but this morning we were hit with tornado and hail alerts. It looks like we may have some weather issues again tomorrow and through the weekend.

Oct 17, 2015 - Kenner Oktoberfest

Dan drove us to Kenner which on the south side of the lake and a little west of New Orleans, they are holding an Oktoberfest. This is a small town and one street was blocked off - many beer vendors and a couple of German food vendors. There was a band that wasn't the best - saving the name brand ones for the evening no doubt. There were high tables set up in the street so it must become a real party at night. Ray got a muffaletta sandwich at Gendusa's Italian market that was across the street. We later went back for Gelato that was very...

2015 Eagle trip

Oct 16, 2015 - Hollywood Casino

We are at the Naval Base in Gulfport, it's still a great park but more occupants than last time. There are only 7 spaces reserved for stays of 14 days or less, was a good thing we reserved ahead of time. One of the neighbors in the park has put together a comprehensive list of the meal deals at the casinos - each day there is at least one. The Hollywood Casino has 1/2 off lunch on Friday and is at Bay St. Louis so it's the closest one to Lacombe LA. We met Judi and Dan for lunch, a great buffet and the cost for both of us was $13. This is a...

2015 Eagle trip

Feb 22, 2014 - Gulfport, MS

2/21 A short trip today so we don't get underway till around 11. The late start means we tottaly miss any morning traffic going through Mobile, so a nice eash drive. A very classy visitors center as we enter MS. They have a sheet of what's going on for Mardi Gras in the area, there is one we may check out. Campgrounds of the south is a good size campground with flat cement pads for each space. They have wifi but very low band width so of some value but we will still need to use our own hotspot for some things. 2/22 We head for the coast...

Nov 3, 2013 - The Long, Long Beach

We passed by Gulfport, Mississippi on Interstate 10 and arrived in Slidell, Louisanna. We are located about a 30 minute drive to New Orleans. As we prepared to leave Merritt Island, Bob and Cindi gave us a gift of dinner at the world famous "Blow Fly Inn." This restaurant is located on Bernard Bayou in Gulfport, Mississippi. Today we took the scenic highway 90 (aka The Old Spanish Trail)from Slidell to Biloxi. We have seen the effects of Katrina more than 8 years later. There is a real blight of abandoned properties covered in graffitti or...

Oct 21, 2013 - bad luck

Well here we are still in Gulfport. We developed a leak in our hot water heater and it will need to be replaced. Today(Monday) is the first day they were able to get us in to look at it.As it turns out it was completely rusted out on the bottom. The repairman had to order one and says it will be here tomorrow. So far all the people we meet down here have really been nice to us. The RV park owner is letting us stay on a day to day basis and checks on us every day to make sure we are doing okay. He made showers available to us since we do not...

Oct 15, 2013 - Relaxing

Spent the day relaxing today, took a drive along the coast and into some of the surrounding communities. Found some really nice neighborhoods. Visited our friend Taz again as he is back in the hospital. Paul is already planning for next year. We both really like the area and have agreed that it is a good place to be in the winter. Who knows what a year will bring. Temperature today 84 degrees. Loving the warmth.

Oct 14, 2013 - New Orleans

Spent the day in New Orleans today. We were really excited to see if it had changed since we were there before Katrina. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the biggest change was that it was actually cleaner. We started out by going to the French Market. It is the biggest flea market we've ever been to. From there we went up Decatur St. to Cafe' du Monde, the original French Market coffee stand, serving the famous beignets. Can't go to New Orleans without having this treat! Then we were on to Jackson Square where the St. Louis...

Oct 13, 2013 - Taking it easy

Well we have been here for a few days and can't say we've done very much. We went to see our friend Taz and found the prognosis for him isn't so good. He was able to recognize us but was unable to communicate except for yes and no questions. He did finally have a smile for us. He lives with 2 brothers who are completely dedicated to him and take care of all his needs. They seemed genuinely happy that we came for a visit. We will see him a couple more times before we leave. There is a "Cruise the Coast" celebration going on here. There are...

Oct 9, 2013 - going south

Left Vicksburg at 9 AM on US27. Our destination is Gulfport. We will be staying in that area for about 1 week. Will be able to visit our old friend Taz,see the Gulf of Mexico, and take a day to go to New Orleans. There are a lot of lumber mills and cattle farms in this area. We have seen mostly Black Angus and Brahmas. We also saw one huge goat farm. The trees along this route through Crystal Springs and Magee are so thick on both sides of the road they create an arch and are so thick you can't see through them. Reminds me of the road into...
