Jun 28, 2011 - The World's Biggest Ball of Twine

It felt kinda strange just 'Bama and I headed down the road together this morning. Sam was following in the jeep as we only had about 7 miles to go to the dealer. Get there without incident and early. After giving the service advisor our list, he says, he thinks it'll be a couple of hours. Okie, dok, know of a good local place for breakfast. He says if it was him, he'd go to Nelson Brothers, down the interstate. Well we know right where that is, because it's the turn off to the campground we had stayed at for two nights. Off we go. Very...

Oct 22, 2010 - Worthington, MN - Portage, Wisconsin

Another beautiful, sunny, though windy day greets us this morning. After we go into Walmart to pay our 'camping fee' (buying things we can't live without!) we are off again on I-90 East. It is about 55 degrees F and the wind is coming from the south; it takes concentration to stay in your lane on the interstate. It is very flat here; Minnesota was once a sea of prairie grass at the eastern edge of the Great Plains, home to large herds of buffalo. Today, it has fertile farmland, with pastures, barns and stands of trees. The fall harvest is...

This morning we are off to see Mount Rushmore; it is another beautiful day with a temperature of about 66 degrees Fahrenheit at 9 am. It is about a 14 mile drive up the road, so enough time to read up on the history. In 1923, Doane Robinson, superintendent of the South Dakota Historical Society came up with the idea to carve a massive memorial from stone that was large enough to put South Dakota on the map. He wanted to use western figures such as Lewis & Clark, Buffalo Bill Cody and legendary Sioux warriors. He sent a letter to sculptor...

Oct 20, 2009 - World's Largest Ball of Twin (By One Man)

We pulled out of Hinckley around 10:30 this morning and began heading south. Somehow we missed Hwy 23 which would have routed us north of Minneapolis so we ended up on Hwy 35 and taking the west and south bypasses. The speed limit here on many highways is 70 mph -good and bad as on the 694 bypass we saw an accident that had just happened. A truck looked like it lost control in the median ditch and ended up on it's roof. Rescur personnel had not even arrived yet but there were a ton of people who stopped to help and the traffic came to a...

Following The Sun

May 19, 2008 - Worthington, MN

As we crossed Minnesota on I-90 we saw mostly farmland. All of the fields plowed, getting ready for planting with windmills dotting the fields. You just don’t realize just how much farmeland there is unless you are from these areas. We decided to stay at Olsen Park & Campground in Worthington, our son Doug told us it was nice and he was right. It is a small park located on Okabena Lake. Our site is right on the lake, what a beautiful view.
