Aug 21, 2015 - The Corn Palace

I had heard a lot about the Corn Palace and my expectations were high.... It was a neat stop and it was enjoyable - but perhaps not worth all the hype!! I thought there would be more extensive corn as the make-up of the building! It was really just a bunch of corn murals! Never-the-less, the murals were interesting and we learned some interesting facts. The left handed handshake was in the center of a series of murals depicting the tenative relations between white settlers and the Native Americans. Since the left hand leads to the heart,...

Aug 20, 2015 - Walnut Grove, MN

The Laura Ingalls Wilder (Museum was small but filled with a lot of hands on items. Alyssa thoroughly enjoyed her time playing and pretending in Grandma's house. It was interesting to read all the school teacher's rules from 1915 - "you may not marry during the time of your contract" and "you may not ride in a carriage or automobile with any man unless he is your father or brother". The students rules were good too - "Do not call your classmates names or fight with them. Love and help each other." "Be silent during classes. Do not talk...

Jun 23, 2015 - On the Banks of Plum Creek

Laura lived on, no actually, IN the bank of Plum Creek. We got really excited to go over the creek we read about. And guess what, a farmer actually found the sod house they lived in and it can be visited! However, half of the states are flooded that don't have drought, so it's under water! I suppose you can wade to it, but left the good muck boots at home. It looks like one of the pictures, but wetter. You know, I never understood the midwest, and never really had any use for it, but it's nice and green at the moment, we haven't had a...

Jul 25, 2011 - Wilder, Weather, and Wall

As of last night, I was the farthest west I had ever been in my life. Today I went even further, and for the first time ever am in the Mountain time zone. We did a lot of interesting things on the way here, too. Two years ago when we first decided to take this trip I said right from the beginning that I wanted to travel west via Minnesota and South Dakota because I wanted to visit some of the sites from Laura Ingalls Wilder's books, which I had read many times in my life. I have been wishing to see these places since I was a little girl....

Jun 21, 2010 - Day 4: Wisconsin - Minnesota

After having breakfast at the hotel this morning, we set out on the road the latest we have so far.... 9 AM. We were supposed to have a shorter and more relaxing drive today; however, that wasn't in the cards for us. We had several road closures and detours to deal with today, which made for a more stressful and longer drive for us. Despite the rainy dreary weather this morning, we did manage to see some nice countryside. We followed the Mississippi River for quite a ways today. Our game plan was to follow the Mississippi on the Wisconsin...
