Oct 11, 2012 - Still in Wabasha

COLD today!!! We went to Grandpas barn first...a warehouse full of crafts and Cal wants to take my temp because I didn't buy anything. Then we went to the eagle center for a couple hours. Go figure..I bought a keychain. We found out an eagle can see a mouse at 3 miles and a rabbit at 5 miles. We also learned an eagle can squirt poop up to 8 feet and we were in the first row. MISSED US !!!We then went to Alma and looked at all the scenery that you see in the pics. We stopped at the cheese shop and creamery in Nelson and got some cheese and...

Oct 10, 2012 - Mankato to Wabasha

Hi everyone... Day 1 went well but was long... We started out in Pemberton and ended in Wabasha. We had an audio tour CD for everyplace from Prescott, Wisc to Keiler, Wisc.. but we only made it as far as Nelson today. We stopped at every historical marker we found to check out the sites the CD told us were in that town. We saw Laura Ingall Wilders first home, a bow and arrow formation made of rock in the side of a bluff, and Maiden Rock where tale has it that a maiden jumped to her death after her lover was killed by her fathers "men" after...

Jun 28, 2012 - Whalan, MN

The boys went tubing. The river is shallow and slow so we let them on their own. (So they thought.) They both are good swimmers but nervous grandparents had to keep watch. We kept driving up and down the highway keeping an eye on them. We sat on the Whalan bridge watching for awhile. As they went under they said they were bored. It was a long slow trip for them. They weren't back an hour and begging to go again. They will get a couple more trips when the niece's and nephews show up this weekend.

Jun 26, 2012 - Wabasha, MN

We came North to get out of the Arizona summer heat. It is 91 degrees today with 50% humidity. Yuk! We decided it would be a good day to drive over to Wabasha, MN to visit the National Eagle Center. We did a few side trips. Larry was showing the boys his old stomping grounds. Creeks he use to swim in, inspiration point, where his dad grew up. The kids soaked all of it up. We stopped at the Lark Toy Center to see the hand made carousel. It took the boys a while to walk around the toys and look at the 'old' toys on display. We had lunch there...

From Whispering Pines Campground – Holmen, WI Today we completed our list of places to go and things to see along this portion of what is referred to as the Mississippi Bluffs Area of the Great River Road……….a 140 mile stretch from the Iowa border to Hastings, MN. Only two more towns remain in this bluff section of the river road and these are first up when we make our next move on Friday…….Red Wing & Hastings, MN. We enjoyed another trio of river towns on this day all across the river in Minnesota………Lake City, Wabasha and Kellogg. On the...

Home Sweet RV - 2011

Jul 27, 2009 - Eagles (Not the Philly Variety)

We headed south out of the Twin Cities area along the Great River Road. Our route today took us right along the Mississippi and through cities such as Hastings, Red Wing, and Wabasha. Red Wing is the home of Red Wing Shoes and we just missed the unveiling of the World’s Largest Boot. We’ll have to go back to see it on another trip. We stopped in Wabasha which is a pretty neat river town. The National Eagle Center is located in the city along the river. It’s located here because bald eagles spend a lot of time in the area especially in the...

Jul 13, 2007 - Eagles & A Pow-Wow

From Treasure Island RV Resort, Red Wing, Minnesota, 50 miles SE from St. Paul. Mid-morning yesterday we checked-in with the campground office as they had asked us to do on Wednesday when we first arrived. When I did so, different staff members were on duty, with no notes for us from the previous day. They did not have a workable solution for us to remain here for the weekend, but were not ready to evict us either. They asked that I check-back with them in the early afternoon. When I did so, they had found a spot that was open through the...
