Aug 24, 2018 - Celebrating 49

We left Grand Marais to head down the coast to Two Harbors where we'll be staying for the next week. Our first stop is at the Two Harbors Lighthouse B&B that I booked for our 49th wedding anniversary. The Two Harbors Lighthouse is the oldest operating lighthouse in Minnesota. It's 50 foot tall is made of red brick and stands 78 feet above the lake surface. The head keeper's residence is attached. The walls of the tower were built to be 3 bricks thick and the walls where the tower and house meet are a full 5 bricks thick for the safety of...

Jul 28, 2018 - Day Trip: Two Harbors, Minnesota

Happy Birthday to my sister, Eileen! This is an “extra” day for us in Duluth. What to do? We head to Duluth. We stop for a late breakfast at a popular restaurant. There is a line. No more waiting. Around the corner, we find Mike’s Western Café. It is wonderful! The food is great. The service is fast. The owners spend time talking with us. If we come back this way, we know where to eat breakfast! We discuss today’s plans. We decide to travel again toward Two Harbors. This time, we will do it our way! We use I35 until it ends. We get on Route...

Jul 27, 2018 - Day Trip: Two Harbors, Minnesota

I try to put a positive spin on my travels. Today, it will be difficult. We signed up for a train ride on the North Shore Scenic Railroad. Leave at 10:00. Arrive at Two Harbors at 12:00. Depart Two Harbors at 2:00. Arrive back at Duluth at 4:00. It sounds perfect. We have a little trouble finding parking. Better signage would have helped but we are on time. There is a railroad museum that we tour while we wait. It looks like a good start to the day. We leave Duluth late. The windows do not open and are dirty. I am concerned about taking...

Sep 21, 2017 - North Shore Lake Superior

The day promises to be beautiful; we headed north along the shore road. The first stop was at Betty’s Pies for breakfast. Not a bad way to start the day. Then off to Gooseberry Falls State Park (and rest area). I am so impressed with the facilities at this and other state parks we saw. There is a beautiful visitor center with attached gift shop – great place to find gifts for grandchildren, etc. The hiking trails take you to overlooks at the upper, middle, and lower falls. There is still quite a bit of water, even for this time of year....

Sep 20, 2017 - Is it us???

OK, now we’re REALLY convinced that there’s a target on our roof that all of the vicious storms aim for. We woke up at 3:00 to rain and hail and wind and lightning like I’ve seen only once or twice in my life. The flashes were constant and the thunder was immediate. Thankfully, it only lasted about 45 minutes. We were convinced that we’d never get back to sleep, but dropped off pretty quickly. Good thing we only had 45 miles or so to drive to the next stop since we slept in. We arrived at the Burlington Bay campground in Two Harbors with a...

Aug 21, 2016 - Gooseberry & Split Rock

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park located also in Minnesota on the North Shore of Lake Superior. It is best known for the picturesque Split Rock Lighthouse, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States. Built by the United States Lighthouse Service in 1910, the lighthouse and some adjacent buildings have been restored and the Minnesota Historical Society operates them as a museum. Split Rock Lighthouse SP encompasses about 4 miles of rocky shoreline on Lake Superior with several prominent headlands. Named features of the...

Jun 18, 2016 - Afternoon Drive on the North Shore

We drove about 50 miles north of Duluth in the afternoon, stopping to see huge waterfalls called Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse and the lighthouse in Two Harbors. The temperature reached 85 degrees today and it will be even a little warmer tomorrow but then it will be back in the 70s which is one of the reasons we came this far north. On the way back to our campground we followed the route of the marathon from Two Harbors to Duluth. There's a whole lot of clean up to do when you have that many runners. It's time to say good-bye...

May 26, 2015 - Two Harbors and Gooseberry Falls

May 26, 2015 Yesterday, we left Prairie Island, MN and headed north through Duluth, MN to the north shore of Lake Superior and the town of Two Harbors, which, not coincidentally, has two harbors, Burlington and Agate. The weather was awful for two days with this heavy mist that simply did not let up. We are staying at the Burlington campground which is a town owned one and quite nice with full hookups. Our site is facing Lake Superior; at least we think it is but it is so foggy that we can’t really see the lake. We walked to town along the...

Aug 18, 2014 - Two Harbors, MN - Burlington Bay Campground

It was a quick 40 miles from South Range, WI to Two Harbors, MN. It required going through Superior, WI and then across the St. Louis River into and through Duluth, MN. Both areas are pretty industrial handling all the material and ship traffic that makes the trip from here across Lake Superior and through the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie into Lake Huron and beyond. We are staying at the delightful Burlington Bay Campground, which is a city park in Two Harbors. We are in the new, big rig area equipped with 50 amp, full hookup sites with a...

Aug 4, 2013 - chasing waterfalls and lighthouses along Lake Superior's northern coastline

Our final day at Grand Portage was another bike ride south to Grand Marais along the coastline of Lake Superior. We called it our chasing waterfalls and lighthouse day since we visited several. In Grand Marais we stopped for awhile at their annual fisherman’s festival – it was fun even though somewhat crowded. After that, we moved south to the Duluth area and set up the rig at Ogston RV park north of Duluth. During our visit there, we met up with RV friends Helen and Bill Moll. They stayed at a park right in town. Helen is a Duluth native...

May 6, 2013 - HOME AT THE LAKE

Monday, May 06, 2013 We made it home last Tuesday. I couldn’t wait. I called my snowmover guy on Monday evening and he said all the ice melted off the driveway! I was amazed so we headed north. It was a beautiful day with temps in 60’s. We didn’t hit snow until we were almost to Duluth which surprised us. When we got to the cabin we always walk in first to make sure everything looks good for pulling the trailer in. We ran into a neighbor on the road and he took the pic of us in front of the driveway. Everything was looking good and boy was...
