Oct 3, 2012 - Wolves, bears and slot machines

Huge disappointment! We had come 200 miles to go to the Soudan Underground Iron Ore Mine where we would be taken down 20 plus levels to 2,000 plus feet below ground. There we would learn all about iron ore mining. We were really looking forward to it. When I looked at the AAA book a few months back I had no idea that it would be October when we visited and did not remember that it closed on September 30. Darn and today is October 3. So instead we spent the day at two wildlife centers. First we went to the International Wolf Center that was...

Oct 2, 2012 - Bayfield, WI to Tower, MN

Left Bayfield and traveled to Tower, Minnesota today. I can now cross off one more state on my “to-see list.” I have only Alabama left to see. Fred has seen them all now. The drive today was all about TREES. Trees everywhere we looked. We drove through Duluth and I took several pictures. I could not believe all the silos of grain. The trees are mainly fir,...

We woke up at the Holiday truck stop in Superior this mnrning and could see our breath in the MoHo. We had plugged the electric blanket into the inverter so the bed was cozy, but getting up was hard...not to mention thinking of taking a shower! The truck noise didn't bother me last night but Bill said he couldn't sleep because of it. My problem was sharing the small, small queen bed with Dozey and the 3 monsters. Next MoHo WILL have a king bed! Hit the road around 10:30am and decided to take Hwy 61 up the Superior shore first because it is...

Following The Sun

Jul 5, 2009 - Tower

We drove to Tower and are staying in another casino. This is on a beautiful lake. The town was a big mining town in its day 1882. We drove over to the Soudan Iron Mine for a tour, probably on of the best mining tour we taken. This is Minnesota oldest and deepest iron mine. We had to take a 3 minute elevator ride down, which was the same one the miners used, we only had six and it was crowded, they put 18 in the day. We traveled 2400 feet down to the 27th level then took an electric train though the tunnels to were the last miners worked. It...
