Jul 29, 2019 - Day 36

Day 36 Manitowoc WI to Ludington, MI 6.2 miles, 14.2 average....Tough day Today was actually quite fun. WE got to sleep in and just had to be at the ferry by 12:30 even though it doesn't leave until 2:00. Takes a while to load a boat this big. It was a 4 hour crossing of Lake Michigan and again we had spectacular weather. So we are now in another state and also now in the Eastern time zone and we have an early start tomorrow with a 112 mile day. The ferry is the SS Badger and is a 420 foot coal fired ferry and has been doing this crossing...

Jul 25, 2019 - Day 32

Rochester MN to La Cross WI 87.2 miles, 3372 feet of climb, 15.1 average Today was a really beautiful day of riding. The topography has changed from just fields of corn and soy to hills of woodlands + fields of corn and soy. Really much more varied and interesting. Another day of really temperate weather, mostly mid 70's all day. WE rolled over many hills and the first rest stop was by a river with a small falls called Bucksnort Park. Later we were on a really nice bike path for around 15 miles bordered by a river which ended at a great...

Jul 24, 2019 - Day 31

Day 31 Mankato to Rochester MN 101 miles 2657 feet of climb and I averaged 17.4 mph Not a lot to report on today. Another lovely day on the road. Really nothing much to take pictures of either, Still feeling good overall. Temps were in the mid-70's most of the day , which from what I understand is pretty unusual in these parts. Ride leader said last year it was hot, very humid and they were dodging thunderstorms all day. I consider myself lucky. Dinner was interesting at a Mongolian BBQ place. Really good, then some of us went out for ice...

May 2, 2017 - Rochester MN

After a short painless 2 hour drive on Saturday we perched in Rochester, in the SE corner of Minnesota and home to the famous Mayo Clinic, to ride out the forecast of rain, wind and possible snow...and to regroup...again. We decided that we can still do Voyageurs and Isle Royale national parks, just sometime after we leave West Virginia in early June. So it now appears that going north was a less-than-well thought out decision and a waste of fuel, but hey, we’ve gotta be somewhere so what’s so bad about Minnesota? While the weather is less...

Oct 20, 2016 - Onward to Rochester, Minnesota

10-20-16 Onward to Rochester, Minnesota Got a pretty good free breakfast this morning at the Best Western Inn in Minot. I usually have a protein bar and string cheese, but treated myself today. Getting warmer, 40 degrees and I left the snow behind me in Canada. Did the same kind of drive. Lots of farm country and the features do not change. I stopped more often for coffee in order to keep alert. Drove through my first large town since starting this trip, Minneapolis/St Paul. Was hectic on the freeway, but managed to get through without...

Jul 25, 2016 - Rochester, MN.

We have not been updating because we haven't been doing much. As Larry said in the last post...we are visiting family. We got here in the middle of a heat wave. It's a lot like home (Phoenix) by staying inside and just going from air conditioning to air conditioning. We have decided to cut our summer trip short. It's hot, and for some reason we are just wanting to go home. One factor is: We have sold our cabin and need to get back to fix a couple things and the closing. Home inspections seem to pick at all the little things that anyone can...

Jul 28, 2015 - Mayo Clinic

After leaving the Twin Cities we drove down I 35 about 90 minutes and found the campground where I had made a reservation. It was conveniently located just off the highway, We prepared ourselves for an afternoon of exploring the area by car. Our first stop was the world famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. It was started by William Mayo in 1864. His sons, William and Charles, joined the practice and over time it became famous as one of the top research facilities in medicine in the world. We decided to do more than just drive around some of...

Aug 29, 2014 - Rochester, MN - Updates & A Very Unique B&N

(Elena Writing) Ron had his monthly infusion of Zometa at Mayo Clinic. Everything went well. We might mention that Walmart operates a free shuttle to the downtown area making several stops along the way. One of its major stops is Mayo Clinic. We stayed overnight at Walmart and caught the shuttle for a short 1/2 hour ride. It dropped us off at the front door of the clinic; how convenient is that! Later we walked around the plaza where we discovered a Barnes & Noble. It was the most unique B&N with a very interesting history. When we got...

Aug 18, 2014 - Rochester, MN - Great News

(Ron Writing) We spent most of the day at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester for my periodic blood tests and doctor consultation. I had to fast since dinner last night until my blood was drawn at 9 AM. We saw Dr. Lin early this afternoon and by then she had nearly all of the results from the blood tests. All of my counts are very stable with minor fluctuations that did not concern her. We had a nice visit with her again and she sent us on our way with just the requirement that we get another periodic check when we get back to Phoenix in...

Aug 17, 2014 - Rochester, MN - The Biggest Shoe In the World.

(Ron Writing) This afternoon we went off to explore the town of Red Wing, MN. We spent most of our time at the Red Wing Shoe company museum and outlet store. They have a nice small museum about the history of the company with many displays and there is also a video about how they manufacture shoes. It’s all done here in Red Wing and is still very labor intensive with over 200 manufacturing steps for each shoe. They also have a gigantic shoe in the museum that is all handmade just like a regular size shoe – very interesting. We also walked...

We left the campsite and drove over 300 miles to Rochester, MN. We will be back to Rochester to visit with the rest of the family after Larry's reunion this coming weekend. We are parked in Gloria's driveway (his sister that is up-north) for the night. Not sure what the neighbors think. We will do a couple errands in the morning and then head south to Lanesboro. We hope to camp in the city park just behind the high school Larry attended.

Jul 25, 2014 - Rochester, MN

Today we left the mostly cool Lake Michigan shoreline at Kewaunee, WI around 10:00am and started our trip back West. Arrived at Autumn Woods RV Park in Rochester, MN (home of the Mayo Clinic) around 3:30pm, a 300 mile leg. Now we are back in the 80 temps and higher humidity. This is just an overnight stop...sorry no pics. More soon...
