Jun 21, 2017 - Minnesota, Bemidji, Lake Itaska, and Park Rapids

After gassing up for 2.14 in Grand Forks, we headed east at 8 am. We crossed over into Minnesota. Initially, the roads were mostly flat and straight, with gentle rolling hills. We saw gas as low as 2.09, but that's probably the cash price and they add up to 10 cents per gallon sometimes for credit. First stop was in Bemidji at the Tourist Information Center to see Paul Bunyon and Babe the Blue Ox. According to the book put out by the Chamber, stories of them have been around logging camps since the early 20th century. The statues were built...

Aug 12, 2014 - Park Rapids, MN - The Headwaters of the Mississippi River

(Ron Writing) This morning we continued west a short distance on US-71 and M-200 to Itasca State Park. This is a rather large state park set aside to preserve one of the few remaining groves of “old growth” mixed soft and hardwood trees. The timber in the park has never been harvested and retains its natural beauty. But its main attraction is Lake Itasca and the headwaters of the Mississippi River. We first stopped by the very nice visitor center for a short orientation movie and also to view some nice exhibits and get some information from...

Aug 2, 2011 - Minnesota

Left Medora, ND and headed east hoping to find a close filling station as the light was on when we left. We found one down the road 17 miles, and had plenty of gas to spare, at least 4 gallons. The west side of North Dakota looks like the badlands of South Dakota and some of Nebraska. But, beyond the scenery, there's not much to do there except hunt when the season opens. We started getting into the cropland as we moved east, large sunflower fields and what looked like wheat. We saw some interesting metal sculptures along the road and a...

Jul 5, 2011 - Unexpected Finds Near Walker

What a fun and unexpected outing we experienced today! We initially planned on heading south to Little Falls, but rains were predicted and so altered our plans and decided to head to nearby Park Rapids instead! You know, the RVers shopping adventure – the closest Wal-Mart!!! The route took us driving parallel to the Heartland Trail (bike route) and first into the town of Akeley. The trail enters from the west and passes over a trestle above the Crow Wing River, which flows out of the eleventh lake in the Crow Wing Chain. Akeley was once an...

Jul 5, 2008 - Road Trip Part 2

We woke up in Fargo N.D. The town is not to large, but interesting. Painted buffalo, neat buildings and windmills. We headed out to Park Rapids to see the rodeo. On the way we passed thru Snellman, MN and stopped at a small antique, craft, whatnot store. I think the whole town had about 3 buildings. But hey, they had a girl go to the Miss America pageant several years ago. I'm impressed. We are staying in Park Rapids, MN at Knights Cabins. Small but nice and clean. The people are friendly. We have walked around town, ate at a wonderful...

Sep 8, 2007 - Three days with friends near Park Rapids, MN

We had an uneventful drive from Jamestown, ND, through Fargo, and over to a new home under construction by friends who live near Park Rapids, MN. We had heavy rain for the entire drive, but the wind stayed behind us and there was very little traffic. The road to the new home of Don and Lana Walter (we met them in Hot Springs, Arkansas, last year) was located down what would normally be a gravel/dirt road...it had become a nice slick mass of mud for our drive!! Our trailer and truck looked fabulous after their "mud treatment" and the drive...
