Oct 16, 2017 - Home & final thoughts

It was as bad as we thought it'd be--getting up at 3:30 and being in the lobby by 4am. We were taking the shuttle with YL (young lovers) who were already loaded and ready to go when we arrived. We KNEW it wouldn't take an hour to get to the airport (as Abdulwahab said) and it didn't so we were there by 4:35--way too early. We had to wait until 5 before the check-in desk even opened. Sadly, we were not able to score an upgrade there and even though we tried several other times along the way (even in Paris) we remained in our Premium economy...

Oct 6, 2017 - Thank you, Fates!

Well here we go...maybe someday we'll be taking a trip closer to home but lately we seem to be on those long overseas ones! We left Minneapolis on Friday, Oct 6th around 1pm, for Raleigh. Our long leg, from Raleigh to Paris, was one we had been trying to get an upgrade for weeks. We tried again before checking in at MSP and were told it didn't look good, that if there were anything, we'd have to pay instead of using miles. Once checking in at MSP, we went to the Delta lounge to wait --and asked the agents there if we could get that...

Sep 27, 2017 - Time to head West

Time to Head West...... With our “summer vacation” drawing to an end, we said goody-bye to Carson and Diane, and our thoughts turned to the logistics of traveling west. We took the most direct route, following I-90 along the south shore of Lake Erie, past miles of scenic farmland with glimpses of the lake. We stopped in White Pigeon, Michigan at Quadra Manufacturing, maker of our Bigfoot Hydraulic Leveling System. This is the system that makes set-up so easy for us every time we move the rig – push one button, and no matter how uneven...

Aug 13, 2017 - 10,000 Reasons Why

There are 10,000 reasons to visit Minnesota (actually, the land of 10,000 lakes has 11,842 of them!!) It was a whirlwind week of sightseeing and beauty. Here are the many reasons Minnesota should be on anyone's bucket list: 1) Lake Superior - the largest freshwater lake in the country. Bigger than all of the other Great Lakes combined! 2) Water, lots of it. Lakes, rivers and ponds everywhere you look. My doggies were in water heaven! 3) Minnehaha Regional Park in Minneapolis. Quite simply the most scenic and best hiking trails of any...

Gypsy Journey

Jul 14, 2017 - Home and 1 last surprise

Because we didn't have to be at the airport until 11, we had time to enjoy our breakfast this morning and finish up small packing details. No one bought anything big: each of the kids bought a San Francisco sweatshirt, Kayla bought a small over-the-shoulder bag for day trips in Portland, Colin had a visor from Multnomah falls in Portland, they'd bought an Ocarina at the Portland Saturday market and they'd bought a bag of fortune cookies in Chinatown to take back for their Mom and Dad. I don't think Jef or I had purchased anything (except...

Jul 7, 2017 - On the way

We left Minneapolis this morning at 11am for our flight to Portland OR. It was an uneventful trip and we arrived in Portland at 12:30pm (Portland time; 2:30pm Minneapolis time). We knew we couldn't check into our hotel until 3pm so we had lunch at the airport. Then we took the Metro lite rail from the airport to downtown. We arrived there just about perfectly to check in! Our room at the Embassy suites is a king suite with 1 king bed (guess who gets that?) and 1 queen sofa bed (an easy guess on who gets that). After settling in, we realized...

Oct 6, 2016 - A Long, Long Journey

And...we're off! Tegan took us to the MSP airport at 7am. We had no problems getting thru security and, with the extra time we had, we were able to relax in the Sky Club lounge and enjoy some snacks and mimosas! Our flights, for the next 2 days are: MSP- Portland, OR....this is "premium" seating, just a bit more leg room and closer to the door. Portland- Tokyo, Japan...THIS is our first class flight! It's a 10.5 hr flight and having a seat that totally reclined (to flat) was wonderful. We tried not to enjoy that little snarky feeling you...

Oct 4, 2016 - Ryder Cup

2 weeks in Prior Lakes, MN, just a little SW of downtown Minneapolis, a very rich neighborhood if you go by the size of the houses. This area must be a bedroom community of the Minneapolis area. We are staying at Dakota Meadows campground on the grounds of Mystic Lakes Casino complex, a very large, very nice Indian reservation hotel and casino. Campground has concrete pads and an on call shuttle service over to the hotel/casino/bingo room…..and the food is good. Needless to say we have taken advantage of the shuttle service. Our purpose...

2016 Fall Trip

Jul 27, 2016 - Part I - July 24 Minneapolis, MN

Dalbo, the rain is finished, the morning is beautiful and we said our farewell to Donn Olson last night!. We are armed with his great directions and maps and off we go to Minneapolis and my reunion with Candy, my high school friend and her great husband Eric! The morning ride was perfect and cool. Not too much sun to start with, a smooth road and the route was exactly as Donn had described it! We got off the main road and made it to Anoka by 9:00AM! In my usual impatient style and excitement, I had it in my head we were almost there!! Eric...

Sep 29, 2015 - Back in the USA and more airports

Tuesday. The thing about traveling on American airlines (vs. any other country) is that not only are the seats so close together your knees are almost to your ears, but the technology tends to suck. We were flying on American Air and I think we pretty much got the oldest plane they had in service. This was a long, overnight flight and this plane stil had those stupid little screens that fold down from the ceiling instead of personal ones at each seat. Do you remember those and how awful it is to try and watch a movie from 7 rows away?? It's...

Sep 12, 2015 - Long Day of travel and arrival

Saturday. Ah the joys of early morning travel...nope, no joys there at all. The alarm went off at 2:45am, which you know I would normally be up anyway but since I knew there'd be little sleep this day, I went to bed at 10:30pm to get some sleep. So up and dressed, booked an Uber ride to the airport (from Jef's brother's house in Maplewood) and arrived at MSP airport at 3:45am. Of course the line to get through security was a MILE long--who ARE all these people??-- but it went fairly quickly and flight was made with no problems. All...

Aug 1, 2015 - Minnehaha Falls

Saturday morning, we finished packing and left the house around 730. We dropped Betsy, Laura, and Steve off at Glacier International Airport and then drove to Missoula. After clearing security, I got a huckleberry scone for a snack before boarding the plane. It would be my last time eating huckleberries for a while. Our first flight to Minneapolis was on time and our layover was 3 hours. I didn’t want to just hang out in the airport, so Sandy and I got a taxi and went to Minnehaha Regional Park, part of Mississippi National River &...
