Jun 22, 2013 - Kieler, WI to Jackson, MN

It started raining during the night so we quickly got up and closed both vents. It eventually stopped and wasn't raining when we got up. But by the time we were ready to leave, it was so dark, it was like the clock had been turned back about 4 hours! And the rain and wind....OMG!!! I told Dave I didn't want to leave! He said we would try it. We were going 35 mph down the road, wipers going full blast and we still couldn't see very well. (thankfully, Dave sees better distance than I do) We stopped for gas not very far down the road and while...

Sep 2, 2012 - Day 104 Mt. Rushmore KOA to Jackson Minnesota KOA

Day 104: Mt. Rushmore to Jackson Minnesota, 456 miles. Not much to observe on this drive. We did see 16 turkeys as we left Mt. Rushmore. Along I90 there are hundreds and hundreds of wind generators. Minnesota has really invested in wind power! It was pretty impressive! Tonight we got the last site at the Jackson KOA. Most of the campers had Minnesota license plates and I'm guessing many knew each other, as they were partying past quiet hours!

Jul 8, 2012 - Americana across America

Since we left Indiana we have traversed 4 states; Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and now we are in Minnesota but we have only traveled 600 miles. We need to come back to all 4 and really spend some time there but since we have business in our hometown of Madison and we plan on seeing everyone in California by months end we couldn’t spend the time these states deserved but we did have fun! We drove from Indiana to Rockford, Illinois where we stayed at a nice campground on the Kishwaukee River. It was perfect EXCEPT there was extremely limited...

Jun 12, 2012 - Day 5....Minnie..soda...

Due to the time zone confusion..we are not sure if we left at 0830 or 0930...Dad's phone said it was 0830 in the mountain time zone...Rose's phone said 0930 for central time zone..too weird...maybe it was the aliens! Anyway...technically we were still in MST so we marked our leave time at 0830....however, 5 miles later we crossed into CST...LOL... Our first stop of the day was in Murdo South Dakota...place called Medicine Creek. Nice rest stop, weather pleasant. Had to stop early because a couple cans of mountain dew rolled on to the...

Aug 15, 2011 - Jackson, Minnesota

Left Wall, SD about 8:00am and arrived in the KOA in Jackson about 5:00pm. A sort of non descript kind of day with just the usual scenery for the area, and our minds set on making it home tomorrow. A nice shady camp site and we were able to shower, put some shorts on and sit outside for a while. Tomorrow?? HOME!!!!

Sep 15, 2008 - Day 7 Red Wing MN to Jackson MN

Day 7 Got an early start from Red Wing and headed to Chanhassen, Chaska and Excelsior right outside Minneapolis. Drove by John's old house in Chanhassen– which is now a HUGE new house under construction. Very shady, hilly old neighborhood with a community beach, Carver Beach, on Lotus Lake. I saw where John caught fish and made tree forts in the woods! Next was Excelsior– a cute, trendy village with “ladies who lunch” out shopping in high end stores. Kinda looked like Cashiers or Brevard main street. Took a photo of Clara's (John's...

Jul 22, 2008 - Illinois/Iowa/Minnesota-Glad to be west

Monday, July 22 Happy Birthday to my sister back home! We left our campground in Utica, near Starved Rock, Illinois and crossed into Iowa with a stop at the Iowa Welcome Center right as you cross over the Mississipi River. As I mentioned earlier, one of the campgrounds near Starved Rock didn't have spots due to the storms and now we see other remnants of the storms with many freshly broken trees along the Interstate. They looked pretty ravaged. The countryside is pretty with many many cornfields and old farms. The welcome center in Iowa has...

Jun 28, 2008 - Jackson Minnesota

This was the best section yet for pulling the trailer. Everything went nice and smooth, the trailer pulled nicely and it was a beuatiful day. We went from De Forest WI, to Jackson over the Mississippi and I did not think it was as wide up here as it is. When I was in Memphis, Tenn it was wide and I thought it would have been narrower up here. The section that we crossed had a lot of long narrow islands in the river giving the impression of numerous rivers. Around Jackson there is a wind turbine farm of 67 windmills and an other 67 being...

May 25, 2008 - The Long Trip Home - Final Leg

Thursday 5/22/08: We had only one thing to do in the next couple days and that was to make the final trip home by Saturday or Sunday and missed the holiday traffic on Friday. We started off from a very beautiful camp site in South Dakota early in the morning, well before 9:00 AM. We experienced a great deal of fog, but after about 30 miles or so it started to clear up. We entered I-90 in Rapid City, SD and headed east. We experienced really bad head winds coming from THE EAST and we felt like we were riding a bronc. Finally made it to a KOA...

Hi, we're in Jackson, Minnesota. Population 3500. I love these KOA campgrounds. They are friendly and helpful. Tonight the campground owner is having a barbeque. Everyone is invited. What fun! A $3 charge for food went to a kid's charity. Onward to South Dakota and the Badlands!
