Jul 8, 2015 - Minnesota 2015

MINNESOTA 2015 There are two things that are true about Minnesota: they do have 10,000 beautiful lakes and the mosquito is their state bird. The mosquitos attacked us like they hadn’t eaten since last summer and like Forrest Gump that is all I have to say about that! We found a beautiful campground in Redwood Falls that was a state park that the state turned over to the city. It not only has beautiful hiking trails, water fall, and great campsites but is adjacent to the city golf course. Couldn’t have been more perfect for us. I have...

Going West 2014

Aug 14, 2014 - Voyageurs National Park

This week we ventured about 100 miles north to International Falls, Minnesota. Our goal was to visit Voyageurs National Park again. This is a water-based park. You have to see it by boat. There are 240 boat-in sites for camping but no drive-in camping spots. The lake is nearly 220,000 acres with over 500 islands and 655 miles of shoreline. We took the Grand Tour out of Rainy Lake Visitor Center. This is a two and a half hour boat ride through the islands with stops at two with mining history. Little American Island is one with an abandoned...

Jul 14, 2013 - International Falls, Mn.

It was only a 112 mile drive to International Falls. If you watch the weather in the winter...International Falls is usually the coldest city in the US. Today it is a cool 72 degrees. We drove out to Voyageurs National Park, the only National Park in Minnesota. It consists mostly of marshland and lake. The boat ramps have both Park Rangers and Boarder Control agents. We head into Canada tomorrow. The plan is to drive over the Great Lakes and enter in the US at Alexandria Bay NY. It'a 1300+ mile loop which will take at least 4 or 5 days...

Jul 9, 2013 - International Falls, MN

We woke up to a rainy morning. I got up early since we wanted to get on the road, but Jay and Duke had gotten up even earlier and already gone out to breakfast. Once we got packed up, Jay headed off to Walmart to buy fuel and I went to Home Depot to find a place where we could hook up the car to the RV, as the gas station was a bit tight. And then we were on the road heading north on U.S. 71 from Bemidji to International Falls. We pulled into Arnold's Campground, the ONLY place to stay here, around 11:30 a.m. We set up, had lunch and then...

Days 109 - 112 of The Big TripOn June 21, we were at the Marvin factory, before 9:00am, for our scheduled tour, which took almost two hours. No pictures. What an interesting place. There is a lot of automation, but so much of putting those special windows together is done by hand. Nothing goes to waste. The company brings in the lumber and mills it into parts and pieces. Each piece of lumber is scanned by laser and computer to check for flaws. Those are cut out, ensuring they use as much of each piece of wood as possible. They sometimes...

Feb 8, 2013 - Fargo to International Falls

Another clear day, sun shining, blue sky and -12 degrees, even the joggers were out.pounding the ice around the block. Whilst filling up with fuel, jacket, beanie and gloves on, Nic and I were stunned after watching a bloke walking around in a tee shirt. He was either super tough, mighty stupid or on some sort of chemical influence. Either way we were gob smacked. Hit the highway onto Detroit Lakes for a coffee and a look around another antiques mall. Plenty of stuff we would like to buy but would need a sea container to get it home as it...
