Aug 5, 2017 - Homeward Bound

Well, I guess I got some 'splaining to do. I was heading up to Cass Lake MN to escape the heat and humidity that abundant in Davenport IA and was forecasted to continue for some time there and south. It had originall Ay been my intention to head south from there along the Great River Road tracking the Mississippi River south to New Orleans. From there I intended to head back northeasterly to Wash DC area to visit with daughter Vicki and family before heading back home with a stop in Athens GA to see grandson Timothy. So as reported in the...

Apr 22, 2016 - A few days at the casino

After a trip to our RV mechanic in Princeton, Minnesota for some work on our motorhome, it seemed a shame to just head back to our daughter's driveway in North Oaks, so Hazel and I headed 60 miles Northeast to Grand Casino in Hinckley,Minnesota. Owned and operated by the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, it is a first-class operation, with a 300 pad RV park that's on the "Good Sam Club" list of the top 100 RV parks in the country. It was Thursday afternoon when we pulled in and registered. "One night", I said, showed my casino player's card for...

Dec 26, 2014 - RV Cemetery

My wife Hazel is off visiting grandkids for a month in Washington, DC (our son Tom and his wife Kira have a new baby girl) and then to New Hampshire, and won't return home until about January 8th. That leaves me home alone with the dogs and cats, with Christmas planning completely up to me. My children in the Twin Cities area all have busy schedules, and I decided this year I would do something all by myself, and head to the RV park at the Hinckley, Minnesota Indian casino. Hazel and I get up there a few times a year, and actually once in...

Going West 2014

Aug 16, 2014 - Hazel's 71st Birthday

On Friday August 15th, I headed out with the motorhome from Princeton for Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota, about a 45 minute drive. Hazel was still babysitting at our daughter's home in the Twin Cities, and somewhere along the route I had a phone call from her saying that she'd be along "right after Jeopardy was over". Hazel hardly ever misses Jeopardy. Our oldest son was on the show a few years ago, missing "Final Jeopardy" by about $400 bucks ... what a bummer. When I arrived at the casino RV park, our friends Don and Sandee were...

Aug 2, 2014 - Northshore Drive

Back from Canada, we decided to hang around Hinckley for a few days to rest and catch up on the laundry. Of course, Stephanie, not one to let the grass grow under her, had other plans. We headed to the northern shores of Minnesota on Lake Superior. The drive north through Duluth went along the shore and some quite fancy residential neighborhoods. You could tell the ones just outside of Duluth were not your average middle class neighborhoods. The views overlooking Lake Superior were quite stunning all the way to the Split Rock Lighthouse,...

Jul 30, 2014 - Gone Fishin’!! – Dunlop’s Fly-In Lodge (frmly Little Churchill Lodge)

With the bus parked in Hinckley, MN we headed to north Manitoba, Canada to do a little fishin’ with friends Bill and Beverly Mason. The lodge is 1,031 miles north of Minneapolis, MN (so far it is not on most maps, including our blog map). We headed by car to Minneapolis (about a two hour drive) to catch a flight to Thompson, MB via Winnipeg. We spent the night in Thompson and caught an early morning flight on an 8-seater to the lodge for 4 days on Lake Waskaiowaka catching Walleyes (for shore lunch) and Northern Pike. The lake empties into...

Jul 24, 2014 - Hinckley, MN

From Michigan we moved to Hinckley, MN to a nice campground with good security as we will be leaving the bus here when we go fishing in Canada. After one last visit to Cabela’s to make sure Stephanie was outfitted properly, we toured some sights in the area. The St. Croix National Scenic River Way flows between MN and WI and eventually into the Mississippi. The Feds protected the river in 1968 to provide year round recreational activities for residents and guests of the area. Of course we had to go to the Visitors’ Center for Stephanie to...

Jun 29, 2014 - A Trip to the Casino

This week my wife and I noted the 48th anniversary of our wedding on June 25, 1966, the 90th anniversary of Custer's Last Stand, which somehow seemed appropriate to me at the time. So, we celebrated by driving our 30' Class A motorhome up to the RV Park at Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota. This is a great destination, the park is on the "top 100" list with the "Good Sam Club", with a great swimming pool, WiFi, cable television, all the hookups, and a shuttle bus that comes by every 15 minutes to whisk you to the casino, two blocks away....

Dec 5, 2013 - Ice Station Zebra

Earlier this week, Hazel and I headed to Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota to celebrate my 70th birthday and play blackjack. Great planning, right in the middle of a winter storm warning, but we headed off anyway, towing our Chevy Tracker. Wind, snow, and a slight freezing on the highway made the trip a little tricky at times, especially when we'd get hit with a side wind, gusting at times to about 15 mph. In an hour or so we pulled in to the RV park at the casino and registered. I disconnected the tow vehicle, and a few minutes and a...

Aug 23, 2013 - Breaking even at the casino

With predicted temperatures of 90° at home in Princeton, Hazel and I decided it was time to head North to the casino RV parks, where swimming pools, shade trees, and a better 30 amp electrical connection to run our air conditioner existed. My plug-in at home isn't what it should be, with a "low house power" situation, and when it gets really hot, I'm constantly tripping the circuit breaker on the motorhome's 20 year old air conditioner. A new one is on my bucket list. So, on Tuesday afternoon, we hooked up the Chevy Tracker to the back and...
