Aug 12, 2015 - Grand Rapids, MN

Wed, 12 Aug: A nice easy drive (for Sandi that is...) We had a mostly restful evening at the Bad River Casino east of Ashland Wisconsin. Once up, fed, and Carpe's fresh water tank filled, Bob moved the coach to the dump station. While he tended to that delightful chore Sandi got the car hooked up. Brake and lite tests completed we rolled wheels a few minutes before nine. As noted in yesterday's entry, there is road construction along this stretch of US 2. Yesterday it ended just east of the casino, but it has moved west so upon entering US...

Aug 1, 2014 - Happy Birthday Art

Today is Art’s birthday! It is a milestone. Art turned 62 and that means he is eligible for the Senior Pass otherwise affectionately known as the “Geezer” pass. This is a lifetime pass that will give us free access to federal recreation sites plus discounts on camping. Yippeee. Luckily, there was a national forest office near our RV park in Duluth. We arrived at 8am and I photographed the occasion before leaving for our next destination which was Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Happy Birthday to my man who now says I am his guest when we visit...

Sep 28, 2012 - Going to Grand Rapids

The Adventure caravan was heading south this morning and we didn’t have a very long drive so we decided to lay low until most of them had left the campground. They are on a much tighter schedule than we like so why get in their way. Then, we hooked up and we were on our way north. Once we were through Brainerd, it was an easy drive to Aitken. Joe spotted a church with a large parking lot and we got Foxy and ourselves out for a leg stretch. Aitken is a one-light town and soon we were on our way north to Grand Rapids. The terrain was pretty...

Oct 12, 2008 - Catching up with our Cozumel Connection - Grand Rapids, Minnesota

Grand Rapids, Minnesota, United States - 7th October, 2008 The next stop on our way northward was Grand Rapids, Minnesota, where we had planned to catch up with Dave and Marilynn who we had met in Cozumel, waaay back in March. As we drove into Grand Rapids we came to a bridge with a sign saying “Mississippi River”. We can definitely say that it’s not what you would envisage when you think of the Old Man River and Marilynn later told us that the starting point of the great river is about one and a half hours from their place and you can...

JD's Vacation 2008

Jun 12, 2008 - Grand Rapids, MN

We woke to gorgeous, sunny skies – finally! It had been so long since we had seen the bright sun that it caused us to squint all day long as we drove. We entered Minnesota a few hours down the road and realized that we had just come full circle. We have been on the road ten months and this was our first repeat state. This time through we were going to see a bit of the northern part of the state before turning south to Minneapolis for another visit with my cousins and a tour of the capitol. We drove through beautiful, green countryside,...

Aug 6, 2007 - The Forest History Center

Still from Pokegama Lake COE Campground, near Grand Rapids, in north-central Minnesota. You got any idea what a "Wanigan" is?? No, not a "want-again", not a "when-again"!! Anyway, we saw a genuine reproduction "wanigan" today. A couple of weeks ago I talked about us touring the North West Fur Trading Company, one of 20-some historical attractions managed by the Minnesota Historical Society. Today, we toured our second MHS attraction, the Forest History Center located here in Grand Rapids. The forests of northern Minnesota have had great...

We're Wingin' It

Aug 5, 2007 - Dragonboat Races

From Pokegama Lake (COE) Campground, near Grand Rapids, in north-central MN. Friday was to be our last full day at Fox Lake Campground in Bemidji. We had not taken a good drive around the downtown area, so that was the agenda for the day. Vicki had seen information about the Paul Bunyan & Babe (his blue ox) statues & about the Woolen Mill store. As we drove into town, we noticed a bird's nest that we had not seen before. We thought that maybe it was an eagle's nest, but upon asking at a nearby market, learned that it was an osprey...
