Aug 4, 2012 - Gunflint Lake MN

We drove up the North Shore to Grand Marais and then turned northwest on the Gunflint Trail. Originally we had wanted to stay in Grand Marais but it was Fisherman’s Picnic weekend, an annual celebration there. It’s Grand Marais' favorite festival the first weekend in August. There’s sports/fishing tournaments, kid's carnival, live music, parade, fireworks, sidewalk sales, activities and food vendors and a $10,000 grand prize raffle. And there wasn’t a camping spot around. So we trekked 43 miles further on to Gunflint Lake. A good choice. On...

Jul 16, 2010 - Grand Marais, MN

We are up early and headed back north to Grand Portage for our trip to Isle Royale National Park. John watches the wind and is doubtful the trip will go. He is right. The captain gives us the bad news. The trip is cancelled. You do not want to be on Lake Superior in bad weather. We reschedule for tomorrow. Our trip back to Grand Marais becomes “loop” day. We take every road that heads closer to Lake Superior even if for a short time. Mostly, we find homes that may be year-round but are probably summer or winter homes. We see a sign for...

Jul 15, 2010 - To Grand Marais, MN

We head south from Thunder Bay and within an hour, we are at customs. We chat with the first crossing guard. He tells us to pull over so another guard can go through the RV and trailer. We expect this. The second guard opens our side door. He chats with us and welcomes us back to the US. He never gets in the RV. He never asks us what is in the trailer. I still do not know what happened at the International Peace Garden! In a short time, we are at Grand Portage National Monument. The National Monument is a pleasant stop. We visit the...

Aug 25, 2008 - To Grand Marais, MN

I had a late breakfast at a Perkins not far from my hotels, then I had an errand: I was asked to find the grave of Edward Mattke, one of the founders of Alpha Chi Sigma, in the Forest Hills Cemetery in Duluth, which I did. I then drove up to Two Harbors, which has a nice lighthouse (open for tours, though I didn't go in; also operates as a bed and breakfast) as well as a long breakwall you can walk out on, which gives a good view of the ore-loading docks there. I next went to Gooseberry Falls State Park, where the Gooseberry River goes over...

Aug 1, 2008 - Day 111 Grand Marais, North Shore, MN

Day 111 Friday 1st August Grand Marais, North Shore, MN page 123 M15 or pg 54 B12 Today we’ve been richly rewarded in the beauty of the North Shore drive, along the banks of Lake Superior. After nearly being evicted from our free camping spot last nite we were on the road fairly early. The total drive along the North Shore is approx 156 miles. All of Minnesota and the rest of USA are on vacation and finding a camping spot in this popular area has proved to be rather difficult. All state camp grounds within a hundred miles of Duluth are...

Second Time Around

Nov 16, 2007 - Before the Beginning

Day before yesterday I was kayaking off this Beach .. sure it was a bit cool but very nice. Later quite a strong wind from the East..maybe NE gathered a lot of ice and packed it into the bay and piled up on the beach. Now we need a NW wind to go paddling again from here.

Jourey to my Dreams

Sep 14, 2007 - In beautiful Grand Marais, MN...again!

After a too short visit with friends Dave and Toni and Don and Mary, we hitched up in a cold wind-driven snow shower at Lake Vermillion and drove through Duluth to spectacular Grand Marais, MN. This is our second visit to this wonderful little town located on the shore of Lake Superior about forty miles south of the Canadian border. After a very cold and sometimes snowy drive we arrived at the Municipal Campground in Grand Marais under a partly cloudy sky with a cold wind blowing in from the north. The occasional snow showers had become...

May 11, 2007 - North Shore of Lake Superior, Minnesota

Based in Grand Marais on a campground where we overlooked the harbour we explored the the scenic Highway 61 which travels along the shore of Lake Superior. The shoreline is a mixture of dramatic flat-faced cliffs and beaches, where the constant motion of the inland sea shapes and pebbles into smooth orbs. There are rivers emptying waters into Lake Superior that have formed dozens of waterfalls. Grand Portage National Monument: The Grand Portage National Monument features a reconstructed North West Company fur trading post from the late...

Oct 5, 2006 - Beautiful Fall colors in Grand Marais, Minnesota

The Grand Marais City RV Park and Camp was our next stop and what a gem this is!! Randy and Diana Umbs (remember, we met them in Montana in May!) were right on the mark about this beautiful place. Their favorite pizza parlor, Sven & Ole's Pizza, was well worth the trip. The Pie Place was great for three meals including breakfast, lunch, and dinner (did I forget to mention the awesome pies?) Fall colors in the entire area were fabulous. Rumbs & Co visited for a weekend. We just couldn't get enough of the spectacular view out over Lake...

Jun 22, 2006 - Grand Marais, MN

We packed up again and moved just 40 miles north to Grand Marais, MN. We camped at Grand Marais Municipal RV Park. It is a large 300 site campground right on Lake Superior. We had a great site facing the lake. Grand Marais is a very picturesque small city that runs along the lake. Lots of tourists stop here. In fact, in the campground, you can see many RV's that are permanently here for the entire summer. It's a sleepy little town, everything closes up about 7-8 p.m. There are only about 4,000 people in the whole Cook County here. They...
