Aug 7, 2014 - Grand Marais Trip

There have been many highlights to our summer here in Minnesota but none more special than our trip last weekend to Grand Marais for the Fisherman's Picnic. Grand Marais' setting on the shore of Lake Superior is beautiful and the event has activities for everyone to enjoy. The weekend before we arrived Grand Marais had its Dragonboat Festival and while we were gone Bemidji had its festival. Just before we left Bemidji we were able to watch the boats practicing for the event on Lake Bemidji. On the way to Grand Marais we stopped to visit a...

Saturday July 19, 2014 -- Devil Track Lake National Forest Campground on the Gunflint Trail We dumped all tanks and filled with water before leaving Grand Marais for the national forest. Hoping to make it for ten days or so without water or dumping since we won’t be back for that many days. Taking it easy is on the agenda. Playing cards, eating and visiting and Lowell and John doing a few more projects. Sunday July 20, 2014 – Thursday, July 24, 2014 -- Devil Track Lake NF Campground on the Gunflint Trail One day Lowell and John braved the...

Jul 18, 2014 - North to Lake Superior

Saturday, July 12, 2014 – Driving to Grand Marais Campground, Grand Marais, MN We left Maple Springs Campground around noon. Lowell and I cannot pass the White Castle Restaurant in Forest Lake without getting some White Castle hamburgers. Since Barbara and John had never been to a White Castle we sure wanted them to experience it. They had the bought ones from the store but not the fresh made ones. So we HAD to stop for their sake and ours. We spent the night in Cloquet at the Wal-Mart store. Sunday, July 13, 2014 We stopped at the Split...

Jun 29, 2014 - Grand Marais, MN - Touring the Gunflint Trail

(Ron Writing) This afternoon we continued our drive on the Gunflint Trail heading northwest to the end of the road. Although called a trail, it is an asphalt paved county highway that is in pretty good condition most of the way. There were some stretches of rough road and a six-mile stretch of gravel that is being reconstructed. On our drive out we had mostly sunny weather with some brief cloudy periods and a short period of very heavy rain. On our return trip we had mostly cloudy, rainy weather. Later this afternoon we even had some BB...

Jun 28, 2014 - Grand Marais, MN - The "North Shore" of the USA

(Ron Writing) We left our beautiful little boondocking site this morning and continued south on MN-1 to MN-6. We took MN-6 about 6 miles back to where it ends in MN-61. Then we continued on the North Shore Scenic Drive northeast just a few miles east of where we left it yesterday. Our first stop was at Cross Creek in Lutzen, MN. This creek was named by Fr. Frederic Baraga. In October of 1816 the “snowshoe priest” and an Indian guide were crossing Lake Superior when a storm drove them onto the shore where this creek empties into the lake....

Aug 4, 2012 - Gunflint Lake MN

We drove up the North Shore to Grand Marais and then turned northwest on the Gunflint Trail. Originally we had wanted to stay in Grand Marais but it was Fisherman’s Picnic weekend, an annual celebration there. It’s Grand Marais' favorite festival the first weekend in August. There’s sports/fishing tournaments, kid's carnival, live music, parade, fireworks, sidewalk sales, activities and food vendors and a $10,000 grand prize raffle. And there wasn’t a camping spot around. So we trekked 43 miles further on to Gunflint Lake. A good choice. On...

We are up early and headed back north to Grand Portage for our trip to Isle Royale National Park. John watches the wind and is doubtful the trip will go. He is right. The captain gives us the bad news. The trip is cancelled. You do not want to be on Lake Superior in bad weather. We reschedule for tomorrow. Our trip back to Grand Marais becomes “loop” day. We take every road that heads closer to Lake Superior even if for a short time. Mostly, we find homes that may be year-round but are probably summer or winter homes. We see a sign for...

We head south from Thunder Bay and within an hour, we are at customs. We chat with the first crossing guard. He tells us to pull over so another guard can go through the RV and trailer. We expect this. The second guard opens our side door. He chats with us and welcomes us back to the US. He never gets in the RV. He never asks us what is in the trailer. I still do not know what happened at the International Peace Garden! In a short time, we are at Grand Portage National Monument. The National Monument is a pleasant stop. We visit the...

Aug 25, 2008 - To Grand Marais, MN

I had a late breakfast at a Perkins not far from my hotels, then I had an errand: I was asked to find the grave of Edward Mattke, one of the founders of Alpha Chi Sigma, in the Forest Hills Cemetery in Duluth, which I did. I then drove up to Two Harbors, which has a nice lighthouse (open for tours, though I didn't go in; also operates as a bed and breakfast) as well as a long breakwall you can walk out on, which gives a good view of the ore-loading docks there. I next went to Gooseberry Falls State Park, where the Gooseberry River goes over...

Aug 1, 2008 - Day 111 Grand Marais, North Shore, MN

Day 111 Friday 1st August Grand Marais, North Shore, MN page 123 M15 or pg 54 B12 Today we’ve been richly rewarded in the beauty of the North Shore drive, along the banks of Lake Superior. After nearly being evicted from our free camping spot last nite we were on the road fairly early. The total drive along the North Shore is approx 156 miles. All of Minnesota and the rest of USA are on vacation and finding a camping spot in this popular area has proved to be rather difficult. All state camp grounds within a hundred miles of Duluth are...
