Sep 7, 2018 - Lake One

We slept good but every time we woke up we were listening for any bears. Never heard anything so by morning after a night in a tent we were glad to get up! While we were drinking our coffee we saw at least 200 Canadian geese in groups of 40-50 flying. We also heard and saw about 5000 feet up a group of sandhill cranes heading south on the thermals. The lake was perfectly flat so we went paddling to see what was around the area. Saw 2 bald eagles and their huge nest. We think these are the same ones we saw yesterday. We paddled another 3...

Sep 6, 2018 - Boundary water canoe area

We've always seen articles and shows about the BWCA and decided we would give it a try. Got up at 6:30 in order to meet the shuttle at 7:45 to load up our gear. Saw several deer on the way to the canoe access parking lot about 19 miles away.We put the canoe in and started paddling to the left like we were told. After a couple of deadends we finally found the way out to Lake One (creative name)! We paddled about 3 miles and all the sites were taken so we went a little further and found a couple packing up to leave. Good thing since it was...

Sep 5, 2018 - Ely

We spent today walking around Ely and looking in some of the stores. Had to buy a small cooking stove to take on our canoe trip. We went to the International Wolf ctr and got to see all 4 of their wolves. A very informative ctr with lots of displays. We met up with the outfitter and got the lowdown on our trip. They're going to shuttle us to the put in site and then we're on our own to find a campsite. Loaded up our equipment bags and are heading out at 7:45. Ate a walleye sandwich at Rockwood for supper- very good!

We'll leave Thursday morning for the trip. Fall lake Charles is a national Forest cg that sits back from the lake but has electric and hot showers for $15. Nice!

Jun 27, 2014 - Ely, MN - The International Wolf Center

(Ron Writing) This morning we had waffles and strawberries for breakfast and then continued on MN-1 north toward Ely. We got to the International Wolf Center in Ely at about 11 AM and spent several hours there. The center is very modern and has very nice exhibits of wolves in a museum-like setting. The museum also provides a good overview of the history of wolves and man’s interaction with them over the entire sweep of human history. The center also has a resident pack consisting of four wolves that can be viewed through large glass...

Jun 26, 2014 - Ely, MN - Touring The North Shore

(Ron Writing) We left Hermantown around 9 AM and headed north on the North Shore Scenic Drive (Hwy 61) along Lake Superior. Our first stop was in Knife River at the popular Russ Kendall’s Smokehouse. We weren’t too impressed with the place but we purchased a smoked ciscoe fish just to give it a try. A little farther up the shore we stopped at Two Harbors to see the lighthouse and the ore docks. Two Harbors is the best place to view ships being loaded with ore but today there was only one small old ship tied up at the dock and we didn’t see...

Jul 28, 2013 - Ely, MN: Bears, Wolves and the Root Beer Lady

We moved on into a new part of Minnesota when we left International Falls and moved toward Ely and the Boundary waters region of the state. We stayed at a casino RV park in Tower, which was convenient to the places we wanted to tour in Ely – the International Wolf Center and the Bear Center. Both were very interesting and we learned a lot! We learned that the International Wolf Center is one of the world’s leading organizations dedicated to educating people about wolves. Their mission is to advance the survival of wolf populations by...

Jun 25, 2013 - Border Water Area

Day 113 of The Big Trip It appears that Ely is the headquarters to enter the Boundary Water Canoe Wilderness Area. In this very small town, outfitters were everywhere. In Ely is the North American Bear Center and that was our first destination on the 25th. We didn't know what to expect, but we stepped into another one of the unexpected treasures we keep finding. The mission of the Center is to educate people about the black bear and dispel myths people believe because of their fears. We actually went on the right day, because the three...

Jun 10, 2009 - On to Minnesota

Where in the world are Corky and Johanna? BWCAW Where in the world is that? The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Ely, the end of the road. 100 miles of lakes and woods on northern Minnesota's border make up the Superior National Forest. Ely seems quite appealing with its collection of shops and restaurants. How about let's try the Chocolate Moose? How did we manage to get here? During the decision making process, the choices were Mall of America in SE Mn vs a "wilder" section, the Boundary Waters. Yes, I declined the largest mall in...

Sep 17, 2008 - Ely, MN

We arrived in the land of the canoe and got set up at a great little lodge on the lake. This is my kind of place. There are loons calling, float planes exploring, more kevlar canoes than cars, and almost more lakes than land. The town is mostly a big outfitter for canoe trips into the boundary waters. We did have to swat a few mosquitos but hey. One of the attractions here is a wolf center where you can see some wolves and learn about their habits. We also really wanted to see a moose so we spent some early morning hours searching the...

Aug 5, 2006 - Soudan MN - new place

Got on the road again to a new destination. Arrived at McKinley Park & Campground in Soudan MN around 2pm and got a really nice site. This is a township park located on Lake Vermillion, a large and beautiful lake. Then drove into Ely, a town which is about 20 miles away to check out where the wolf center was that I was going to tour on Sunday. Checked out the movie theatre and it was a really old one that only plays one movie. Decided not to go and went home and had a glass of wine, a wonderful steak dinner and great fire. It was a little...
