Sep 11, 2019 - Childhood home in Detroit Lakes

On to Detroit Lakes, my boyhood hometown (K-Grade 6). The weather seemed a bit blustery but we able to get around OK. First things first we saw the High School (where Dad was Principal) and our home, located right across the street. Detroit Lakes is a resort city with a permanent population of 8500. There are probably 50000 or more there during the summer. Pretty quiet during our time; the RV park was about to close up for the season. So we traveled around seem sights that were familiar, and those that weren't so familiar (we moved away in...

May 27, 2019 - Detroit Lakes

We managed a ten a.m. departure on a damp cold morning. We went south on I-35 for about twenty miles and then west on Minnesota 210 and the U.S. 10. The trip was mostly flat with not much in the way of scenery. But we arrived at the Country Campground, and after having to switch sites due to and electrical problem at the first one, settled in with considerably warmer weather and some sunshine.

Jul 24, 2018 - Detroit Lakes, Minnesota

There is no reason to drive the interstate. We drive south on Route 281 and then east on Route 46. We go all the way to our campground with almost zero use of interstate. Technically, we get on Interstate 94 for one exit and Interstate 29 for one exit. Our road today is straight. There is little wind. It is relaxing. We slow down at Little Yellowstone Park. It is a pretty section of North Dakota. I do not see anything to stop for except a campground. We continue on. We pass three windmill blades. We pass some bicyclists. We pass through...

Jul 2, 2018 - An eagle, golden gopher and deer flies!!!! Detroit Lakes

We are actually in Fargo, ND drinking coffee and waiting for our RV fridge to be repaired. We are on hour number five. Really hoping it will be done soon as we have a three hour trip ahead. Tomorrow we are headed for Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Two months into this journey and I suspect a few things- we will never have enough time in any place and if I'm grumpy take me on a walk in the middle of the woods. Evidently Don feels similarly when he shared this week, "I always feel good walking through the woods." Despite the Lyme fear and...

Jun 5, 2017 - Country Campground in Minasoda

Today was by far one of the best transit days we have had in all of our travels. Up early and on the road by 815 for the longest day of our journey(334 miles). Passing thru Minot, Guthrie, Harvey, Jamestown where we headed east to Fargo and beyond. Weather clear, temps in mid 80s, winds light from our stern. The day passed quickly. Interesting watching the landscape change from the flat lake infested Saskatchewan into the landscape starting to roll slightly with farmers working the fields and cattle everywhere. We have set up in this little...

Jun 24, 2016 - Good day today. Lots of different country

Had a good traveling day today. Beautiful landscapes and lots of lakes and small towns. We are at the Legion Campground in Detroit Lakes MN. Across the road from a nice big lake with a ton of activities happening. Had a nice roast beef dinner and now wine and relaxing. Am craving pizza so on Sunday it is our 45th anniversary and I will get pizza for sure. Where were you 45 years ago?

Aug 18, 2014 - Detroit Lakes, MN Aug

We had a good trip from Duluth to Detroit Lakes. Arrived about 1:00 and were set up by 2:00. We had decided to visit Detroit Lakes because of an invitation from friends, Larry and Eileen Bolstad, whom we know from Kerrville. They have been coming to Kerrville for years, and in fact used to be work-campers at By the River before we were. They live in DL (that's what locals call Detroit Lakes) when they are not in Kerrville. They had invited us to join them for dinner and a concert in the local city park. We arrived about 5:30 and found Larry...

Aug 5, 2014 - Detroit Lakes, MN.

The plan was to drive to Fargo and probably stay for one night. We got to Fargo early and when we checked on camping there wasn't anything appealing. We didn't want to end up in a wood chipper :). We drove on into Minnesota and decided we could go as far as Detroit Lakes. We called ahead and secured a spot at Country Campground. What we didn't know was that this was WE Fest week. WE Fest is held on Soo Pass Ranch and is one of the largest outdoor country western and camping festivals in the nation. This year features Zac Brown, Brad...

Jun 30, 2013 - Detroit Lakes, Minnesota

We left Sioux Falls pretty early in the morning, as we had another long drive day. As we headed north we began to see more and more water. There were lakes and also some standing water. Looks like there's been a lot of rain up this way. As we headed north on I-29 we went from South Dakota into North Dakota. Then exiting the freeway and heading further east we entered Minnesota. Although there was still some farm land, there were more and more lakes and lake resorts. We arrived in the town of Detroit Lakes mid-afternoon and found our...

The morning of June 14th we left Bismarck and headed to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota a 242 mile drive via I94 to Fargo, ND then on US10 to Detroit Lakes. After the horrendous thunderstorm last night, this morning was turning out rather nice and we had mostly sun the rest of the day. We stopped at a rest stop about 20 miles west of Fargo to have a bite of lunch and walk Toby. We stopped in Fargo to put diesel in the motor home then got on US10 for the final leg to Detroit Lakes. The landscape started to changed dramatically as soon as we...

Jul 31, 2011 - Detroit Lakes, Minnesota

Detroit Lakes turned out to be a nice little lake resort area. Last time we were in Minnesota, I said I would only come back for one reason and that’s to see the headwaters of the Mississippi River (our next stop), but now after visiting this little resort town, I’d definitely come back here just to enjoy the lake and the golf courses. We arrived in the late afternoon at one of our membership parks and it was really very nice. It has small park model homes plus some people come for the summer and live in their RV’s. They also take overnight...

Jul 21, 2011 - My stay in MN

I had a great visit here in MN with my friends Dory and Sandy. I know those ladies from Viewpoint Resort in Mesa AZ, where we all spend our winters. Minnesota is beautiful but we did have some awful hot and humid weather as did other parts of the country. Detroit Lakes is a nice little town until the population swells on the week-ends. A lot of Fargo folks come here for their week-end get away. It's surprising how many own homes or park models here since Fargo is only about a 50 minute drive. We parked at Forest Hills which is a nice...
