Jul 4, 2012 - Boat parade on Lake Melissa, Mn
Today is the 4th of July and here in Detroit Lakes, Mn there are many boat parades on some of the larger lakes. The closet one to us is Lake Melisa. We saw the parade from the public boat ramp. All the lakes around here are owned by people and you can"t get to the water. Here is some of the boats that went by and there were many. Then at dark which is 10:00pm here there was a fire works display at the lake but we did not go down to see it we could see some from the park where we are staying.

Jul 3, 2012 - Shooting Star Casino, Mn
Today we took another day trip. We went to the wildlife sanituary north of here and we walked around one of many small lakes. It took us around 45min to walk 1.5 mi in the middle of the day. It was real nice. Then we stopped to cool off and get rid of some money at the Shooting Star Casino.

Jun 14, 2012 - Detroit Lakes, MN
The morning of June 14th we left Bismarck and headed to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota a 242 mile drive via I94 to Fargo, ND then on US10 to Detroit Lakes. After the horrendous thunderstorm last night, this morning was turning out rather nice and we had mostly sun the rest of the day. We stopped at a rest stop about 20 miles west of Fargo to have a bite of lunch and walk Toby. We stopped in Fargo to put diesel in the motor home then got on US10 for the final leg to Detroit Lakes. The landscape started to changed dramatically as soon as we...

Jul 31, 2011 - Detroit Lakes, Minnesota
Detroit Lakes turned out to be a nice little lake resort area. Last time we were in Minnesota, I said I would only come back for one reason and that’s to see the headwaters of the Mississippi River (our next stop), but now after visiting this little resort town, I’d definitely come back here just to enjoy the lake and the golf courses. We arrived in the late afternoon at one of our membership parks and it was really very nice. It has small park model homes plus some people come for the summer and live in their RV’s. They also take overnight...

Jul 21, 2011 - My stay in MN
I had a great visit here in MN with my friends Dory and Sandy. I know those ladies from Viewpoint Resort in Mesa AZ, where we all spend our winters. Minnesota is beautiful but we did have some awful hot and humid weather as did other parts of the country. Detroit Lakes is a nice little town until the population swells on the week-ends. A lot of Fargo folks come here for their week-end get away. It's surprising how many own homes or park models here since Fargo is only about a 50 minute drive. We parked at Forest Hills which is a nice...

Sep 3, 2010 - Month 2 on the road
The designated travelogue writer has grown very lazy this summer. Month two installment is way overdue. So here goes. After 2 wks in Detroit Lakes, we moved on to Walker, MN, located on Leech Lake. Ugly name for a beautiful and very large lake. A visitor to this area soon feels conspicuous not towing a Lund fishing boat or toting a canoe or kayak. This small MN town has one of the largest and most impressive outdoors sports stores we had ever seen. The inventory of fishing equipment and hunting guns is incredible. A large outside wall of...

Thank you, Susan, for getting the tickets on short notice. Cardinals won after...

Jul 21, 2010 - The Mississippi River Headwaters
This was a quiet week in the nicest campground with fantastic weather: not too hot; not to humid; not too buggy. We only explored one “historic” site - the headwaters of the Mississippi River. It is a small stream that leaves Lake Itasca. Considering its length and width at its mouth, it has a very humble beginning. One evening it did hail for all of 30 seconds. Another day we saw the most unique cloud formations but now understand they are fairly common over plains/prairies. It looked like a piece of multicolored silk in shades of grays,...

Jun 3, 2010 - Detroit Lakes, MN
We had a long day today coming to Detroit Lakes. The roads were rough, the braking system on the car acted up again (not related to the roads) for first time in about 6 weeks – since South Dakota, and we had only a couple of places where we could park and walk the dogs. We sure do miss the interstates! Rain is due tonight (it’s already spitting) and tomorrow. We’re only staying here for one night before continuing south and east. It will take us a few days, but our next main stop is Rapid City, SD, where we will tour a minuteman missile...

May 15, 2010 - Now to Pat's cousin's in Detroit Lakes, MN
We took the next two days to reach Detroit Lakes, MN to stop and see Pat's cousin John Flatt and his wife Cheryl. These are relatives that we only met for the first time in 2005 on our prior trip to Alaska. It was great to see them both and to take them to dinner. We spent the night at the American Legion RV Park. John is now retired from teaching and working part time in a cabinet making shop doing fine cabinet making for high end homes. He also does a lot of woodwork in his home shop. Cheryl is still teaching but looking forward to...

Sep 18, 2009 - Back in Minnesota
Back in Minnesota, we stopped to visit relatives in Detroit Lakes area . We are lucky to have a wonderful free spot at Don & Colleen's place with lots of room to park. Only got a short visit in with them as they are heading out to see the fall leaf colors by motorcycle for the weekend. But it was a long enough visit to find out that their gardens/orchard did great this year and so I am back to canning/freezing veggies for the winter. Not exactly how most Rvers live but we have room and we really like having home grown veggies. Don shared...
