Jun 11, 2017 - Saturday & Sunday

We had an amazing thunder storm Friday night. It was beautiful to look out at the lake and watch the storm rage. Our weather has been nearly perfect this entire trip. We got into Mobile just ahead of some major storms, had a great storm our first night in Houston, drove through a pretty wicked storm in Witchita Falls but other than those few days it's been great. This coming week headed into the Bad Lands is not looking quite as good. We're winding down this stay and planning to get back on the road tomorrow a.m. We checked out the Farmer's...

Road Trip 2017

Jun 9, 2017 - June 7, 8 & 9

No report for the last several days....it's been a quiet and awesome time. We did do the dreaded laundry run....ugh....I recall 3 times in my life that I've used a laundromat. One was about 8 years ago when I washed the horse blankets, a major reason why I avoid public laundry facilities. ie: I know what people wash there. Seriously, think about that. The other was 40 years ago when I left my first husband on Dec. 10th (not really a coincidence that this was my birthday) and moved temporarily back home with my parents. Their well went dry...

Road Trip 2017

Jun 6, 2017 - Duluth, the North Shore and Iron Ore Country

On this trip we're trying to balance work days, at "home" days and sight seeing days. Today was a sight seeing day. Spoiler alert, there's a laundromat day in our near future. you might want to skip it. I wish to h*** I could. We'd decided on Duluth because I've only seen Lake Superior from airplanes and I'm told that doesn't count. To be absolutely honest the only flight I can actually remember that might have been in range of seeing the lake, was so IFR that I could have been in Japan for all I could see. The GPS and street signs gave...

Road Trip 2017

Jun 5, 2017 - June 4th and 5th

I think we're probably lapsing into "Lake Living". The heavy lifting (windows, vacuuming mouse tracks, checking out gas, water and electrical systems) is all done. Now we get to enjoy life on Lake Pokegama for another week. We had planned to go to Duluth today but I got off to a slow start, the shower next door was calling my name and the coffee pot chimed in as well. And so we agreed to make an earlier attempt tomorrow. We're making friends with the resident chipmunks. See photos....the videos are on my fb page. I'm not interested enough...

Road Trip 2017

Jun 3, 2017 - A "good" Day

It has been another absolutely drop dead gorgeous day, with blue skies and low humidity. We did some much needed grocery shopping at ALDI. My first time using this chain. They are awesome. I love their cart rental system...and their prices are pretty amazing. Bonus the sign outside said they are hiring, starting at $12.50 an hour. My kind of company. The lake traffic has been much higher today than earlier in the week. I'm sure it will continue to increase as the season advances. Still it is a peaceful, idyllic spot to just...

Road Trip 2017

Jun 2, 2017 - An at "home" day

We woke up to the sound of loons calling on the lake. Today was dedicated to finishing cleaning the 12 windows "with a view". And the view is beautiful. Interestingly I had a chipmunk climb my leg this evening. I've seen squirrels do this in Hyde Park but they'd obviously had lots of training. This was pretty unexpected. I seriously try to remain positive in all of my communications, whether they are email, fb, etc. But...here I draw the line. I've been making do with sponge baths for several day but decided today to take the plunge and use...

Road Trip 2017

Jun 1, 2017 - Itasca State Park and Bemidji

Thirty nine degrees this morning and up before 7:00. We aren't using the gas logs at night as it just gets too hot and since that first frigid night the walls seem to be retaining some heat....still June 1st and 39 degrees. That's cold. It did climb up to 78 towards the end of the day. We had our coffee inside this morning, which reminds me that I forgot to mention listening to the loons yesterday morning. I'm thinking I was first introduced to loons watching, "On Golden Pond" around 1981. I had never encountered them before that movie. We...

Road Trip 2017

May 31, 2017 - May 30th Headed North

As days on the Quest go, this was not our finest. We got off to a good start, leaving Doug and Jeanine's a few minutes past 8:00 and with the promise of her prayers for good weather, safe travels and easily resolved plumbing issues. Driving through Minneapolis/St. Paul rush hour traffic the morning after a 3 day weekend was a piece of cake. There were absolutely no delays due to traffic or construction and we very easily made great time. Sadly the further we drove Northward the cooler and wetter the day became. We arrived at the cabin in 45...

Road Trip 2017

May 31, 2017 - What a Difference a Day Makes

What a difference a day makes. Woke this morning to beautiful blue skies and even bluer water. The cabin doesn't really have curtains and the dawning light was obvious before 5:00 a.m. The plan for today was to stay "home" and spend the majority of our time cleaning the cabin, interspersed with breaks for reading. Deeming it appropriate I began "Lake Wobegon Days" by Garrison Keillor. I don't believe in coincidence but...this book showed up on our condo's "free" shelf the week before we set out on this journey. During a break, Ron and I...
