Jul 25, 2018 - Cloquet, Minnesota

We wake up to rain. John asks if I would go out and cover the bike. “Sure thing!” I spent a great deal of time studying out route yesterday. We are headed to the S.S, Badger. Getting across Minnesota proves to be a bit challenging. We agree that Duluth is the most direct route. There is still a small possibility that John will fish in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Duluth keeps our options open but Duluth is three and a half hours away. We agree to give it a try. We get a late start. We spend money in Detroit Lakes at the grocery, CVS and gas...

Sep 19, 2017 - Still here

Windshield intact once more, we’re off to Cloquet, MN (pronounced as in “everything’s OK in Cloquet” I was told by a local). It’s actually almost Duluth and only a few miles from where we really wanted to be – the north shore of Lake Superior. Since we can’t get in the campground there until tomorrow, this is not a bad alternative. Had dinner at a very nice new restaurant in town and back “home” to head out tomorrow.

Day 6: (June 26th)—Malta, MT The stop in Malta on June 26th was an overnight; we departed Fort Benton about 8:00 am and arrived in Malta about noon (Malta is 161miles from Fort Benton). We had planned to use the afternoon to drive south to explore the Missouri River area but changed our plan after what we learned about that...

When we arrived back at the ranch, everything was sorted and packed, mostly vacuum-sealed in one meal packages – the...

Voyageurs Venture

Sep 2, 2013 - Cloquet, MN

Day 21 - Cloquet, MN We decided to partake in the $3 breakfast offered here at the KOA, blueberry and wild rice pancakes. It sounded really good, so we thought we would give them a try. Apparently it is a specialty in this area. It was interesting, we asked how they were made, I thought about getting a batch. Apparently, they use bisquick, they cook the wild rice by itself, then add it to the bisquick, after the pancakes cook a bit, they add the blueberries (so they don't stick to the gridle). It sounds really weird, but they were really...

2013 Fall Colors

Jun 17, 2012 - Cloquet, MN

It was a short, 3-hour drive up here today, so we had a lazy morning around the camper, before leaving around 11:00. Cloquet is a small town, so nothing really here except the KOA and a handful of restaurants and a Walmart. It is the right location, however, for our trip up to Voyageurs National Park later this week, since the main road out of here is a pretty direct route up to the park. After setting up camp, we still had time for sightseeing, so we made the short, 20 minute drive up to Duluth and drove around that (fairly small) city in...

Aug 29, 2011 - Mini-Soda

Today was a travel day and we said goodbye to Lake Superior and the last of the Great Lakes. We have probably enjoyed Lake Superior the best of all the Great Lakes. We backtracked back to Hwy 2 in Ashland and turned northwest towards Duluth. We missed the good roads in Michigan. We had heard nothing but horror stories about all the construction in the Duluth area so we tried to bypass it as much as possible and it actually worked out well. We stayed on Hwy 2 to the west of Duluth. We could see it in the distance and it is one of the ugliest...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Jul 13, 2011 - Headed out of Lutsen

We left Lutsen today and headed to Cloquet to spend the night at mom's apartment. We stopped by the Holiday in Two Harbors to get gas and ran into Joe H. from Lutsen. We talked about fixing my Chevy Aveo and I told him we'd talk more when I got back from Oregon. Kori asked to spend time with her friend, Brandy, who also lives in Cloquet. They've been friends since Kindergarten so I knew I couldn't say no. Mom was still at work so I stopped there to get the apartment key from her. Then I went and picked up Kevin and took him to Wal-Mart...

Jul 24, 2010 - Cloquet, MN

We drive to town today. Town is Cloquet. We see on the map an island on the St. Louis River. Let’s see what is there. The Island is Dunlap Island. We find what used to be the municipal campground. There is a new campground nearby. The old campground is now a municipal park. It borders the St. Louis River. It has a statue of the Cloquet Voyageur. John goes fishing. He catches some rock bass and has quite a few hits but nothing special. It is a good thing because I am busy taking pictures of wildflowers. I also do some rock hounding. I find...

Jul 21, 2010 - To Cloquet, MN

Our next destination is Cloquet, which is just south of Duluth. We will have continued access to Duluth and areas further south. Again on scenic Route 61, we stop at another small craft harbor. Minnesota has spent a lot of money creating these harbors. There is plenty of free parking for cars with boat trailers. Boats use the harbor to go out onto Lake Superior. We give Minnesota big thumbs up for public access to water. We want to drive Scenic Skyline Drive, as it will take us around Duluth. I have no idea how we are supposed to get to it....

Jun 6, 2006 - Camping at Hickory Lake Campground

We have been here at Hickory Lake Campground for just about two months and we are having the time of our lives. We now know how it is to be treated with respect and totally appreciated for all the hard work we do. We get our two days off a week and we venture out to many of the great scenic sights around the area and will continue to share them all with you but for this week we stayed at camp just to see how it feels. We fished on the lake where every weekend since opening many of our guests rave about the amount of fish they caught and the...
