Jul 29, 2017 - Cass Lake Lodge

Good news for me, the Court ordered a delay in the mediation so I don't need to interrupt my travel - at least for now. So it's back to the drawing board. It has been beastly hot in Davenport together with rain and storms. Checking the long range forecast, it appears for the next 10 or so days, the unstable and hot weather will continue to the south so maybe following the Mississippi south to New Orleans area might not be the most pleasant right now. After a couple of days, the weather further north looked cooler and influenced by a high...

Aug 3, 2016 - Cass Lake Lodge

Click on thumbnail pictures to enlarge So Deb and I parted company today (Weds). She is on her way to Sioux Falls SD to get her drivers license completing her 'move' from VA to SD as a full time RVer. I was planning on taking a couple of days to drive the 300 miles north to Cass Lake, MN where I have a 2 week reservation. But I got an early start and while on the road, I called Cass Lake Lodge and found out that my site was empty so I added a couple of days on the front end and drove straight through. Sharon and I had camped at Cass Lake...

2016 Summer Trip

Aug 9, 2014 - Joes Lodge

We are spending a couple days with Larry's sister's family. Every year they rent a cabin in northern Minnesota for a week to get together and enjoy family time. We caught rumor of when they were going to be there so we reserved a couple days at the campground on site. Lots of food and game playing and just visiting. It rained of and on during the day on Sunday. No complaints, it was cool and there was still plenty of space to get together. It was a fun visit and great to get to see everyone.

Jul 16, 2014 - Chippewa MN - Chippewa National Forest - Chippewa Loop Campground

Our final stop in Minnesota was the Chippewa National Forest. It's beautiful in the forest, with lots of tall Norway pines that sway in the wind. It was great going out in the morning and smelling the pine in the air. Speaking of the swaying pines, a huge section of the forest was damaged by high winds in a storm in July 2012. Blown-down trees caused the closure of roads and campgrounds around the Chippewa National Forest. One of the pictures shows part of this area as it appears today. Our first day at Cass Lake found us driving up to...

Retired at Last!

Jun 3, 2014 - Cass Lake

Today was a travel day. We started out in Prior Lake, went to Camping World (not Best Buy, you'll note), and then started driving for the day. We want to take US Route 2 across Minnesota because that was the route taken by Larry when he was at Grand Forks Air Station back in the day. It was BORING! The country side was trees beside the rode on both sides and then prairie for miles on end. Straight road, little different mile after mile. So much for the day. We stopped for the night at a rest stop at Cass Lake. It was really pretty, and we...

Jul 10, 2013 - Time in Minnesota

We have great friends in this area and truly enjoyed our time with them. The day we arrived they came over and we dined at the "resort" where we parked. They have a restaurant on site, Canal House, and it was good that we could eat there after all the things we had been thru after our arrival. Their daughter and grandson was still in town so we was able to visit with them as well. The next day we went out to Roxie and Jack's cabin on Leech Lake for a delicious brunch and a good game of Mexican Train (Roxie won, of course). Later we dined at...

2013 - Here we come

Jul 8, 2013 - Travel day - Casselton, ND to Cass Lake, MN

The travel day was ok, well as good as it can be on 2 lane roads. We made it ok to Cass Lake and then .............. the transmission in the Mariner locked up, a call to Good Sams and the tow truck arrived to take us and the car to the dealership. More on that story later as we see what developes .... as of now the car is in the shop and we are in a rental. No picture of the RV parked at Stony Point Resort because the stress was mounting and the brain forgot to take that picture. Until the next time .... have fun and stay safe. God...

2013 - Here we come

May 30, 2010 - Cass Lake, MN

I figure this for a slow picture day. The weather is so-so. John takes a small boat out in the morning. He takes his rain gear. I do the laundry and clean the RV. John gets back around lunchtime. He reports that the fishing is better. The fish are still small but he catches rock bass and northern pike. He e-mails me some pictures from his phone. After lunch, we take a ride. The Chippewa National Forest surrounds us. We drive the back roads north of Route 2. We see a public boat access sign. We head down a well-maintained gravel road and...

May 27, 2010 - To Cass Lake, MN

On the road again and boy does it feel great. We go to breakfast. We pick up the trailer. The check engine light comes on. We start the RV in first for a couple of stops. First gear then works by itself. The light eventually goes out! We can handle a computer glitch. Sorry Craig, you will have to find other entertainment today! We are back on the Great River Road. We come to a sign pointing us to the right. It is a gravel road. What to do? Oh, that took all of three seconds to decide. After about three miles, we question our judgment until...

Oct 8, 2009 - Cass Lake, WI - Stoney Point Resort

We drove less than 200 miles to Cass Lake on a cold rainy day. Little did we know, the weather was going to get worse! While here we: - Visited Itasca State Park where the Headwaters of the Mississippi are. It was the only beautiful day we had while here. While the high temp was only in the 40s, the sun shone and the fall colors were spectacular. The majority of trees are aspen and pine, so the colors were primarily yellow and green, but it was stunning. The Headwaters were very scenic. Jim "walked" across the Mississippi on a beam. Coward...

Jun 21, 2008 - Yahoo, on the road - finally

Hooray, Hooray we done left home today. Hit the road at the crack of noon. Spiffed up the house and gave it a polish since the realtors will be bringing folks thru soon now. What a beautiful day to hit the road. Grandma’s Marathon running along so we took the back roads to Proctor to meet our friends Sandy and Wayne for lunch. We had “Gypsy” fired up, she is our GPS unit, so we could keep track of our total trip mileage as we run. Should be easy tho as the truck just turned over 71,000 on Wednesday and we left at 71,045. We took our last...

May 27, 2008 - Minnesota Nice

Here we are in northern Minnesota ... and it is soooo nice. Clear skies, warm weather ... and a "Hamms" from my "other" son. What else would you expect from the "land of sky blue waters"? Our "guard son", Randy, worked as one of my chaplain assistants at the Air Nat'l Guard unit in Duluth ... it's been almost like having another son. Our stop in northern MN was planned to see him and his family. We are at a beautiful campground on Cass Lake ... you'll see by the sunset pics just how beautiful this lake area is. Watch the next couple of days...
