Aug 22, 2014 - Minnesota Slogans

The official state slogan for Minnesota is “Explore Minnesota: Land of 10,000 Lakes.” However, I’ve found a website with some unofficial, humorous slogans that might give you a laugh. Here are some of my favorites: I came, I thawed, I transferred.... Save a Minnesotan - eat a mosquito. One day it's warm, the rest of the year it's cold. Land of 2 seasons: Winter is coming, Winter is here. WARNING: You are entering Minnesota, Please use an alternate route! Minnesota - glove it or leave it. There are only 3 things you can grow in Minnesota:...

Aug 18, 2014 - More Minnesota

We are still in Minnesota – Land of 10,000 Lakes and 10,000 or more mosquitoes. So far, we haven’t been carried away by the mosquitoes and have actually been enjoying beautiful, sunny weather. We’ve traveled through the Iron Range of Minnesota, so called because of the heavy iron ore mining that still exists in the area. We are now within a corridor of the state, Cass County, which was once home to logging companies and sawmills at the turn of the century. As usual, operations ceased when all the trees were cut down. Then, the railroads...

Sep 11, 2013 - Day 2 - Van Riper State Park to Brainerd, Minnesota

Little Terry (and us) survived the first night in Van Riper State Park. So far, so good. However, we have already stopped at Walmart TWICE to get things we forgot. We thought we would have to stop again tomorrow to buy some frying pans, but we found ours. You would think in a little trailer, we wouldn't have a problem but there are all kinds of nooks and crannies to store things away. We left Van Riper about 9:30 this morning. We hit three states today (Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota). Of course, Superior Country (Northern U.P and...

Apr 9, 2013 - Countdown 4-Days!

I had to squeeze in one last trip up to MN before our vacation. I looked at the Weather.com long range forecast last week before coming up and it looked like it was going to be mild. I almost didn't pack a jacket. But, sometime between then and now, an April snowstorm is expected to hit tonight and last for a couple days. Weather.com now says that there will be 4-10 inches of snow blowing in between now and Friday, with the heaviest expected during my 2-1/2 hour drive down to the MSP airport Thursday afternoon. No real worries about the...

Sep 26, 2012 - On the Road Again

Yesterday, we did some major grocery shopping, I caught up on laundry, and we made preparations to hit the road north. We know we’ll be going against the flow heading north in Minnesota this time of year; but, we want to start the Great River Road at the headwaters of the Mississippi, so north we’ll go. We’re actually a little late for this region; they roll up the sidewalks and lock everything up after Labor Day, it seems, or definitely by the end of September. So, we had to alter our itinerary a little to catch the few remaining...

Jun 17, 2012 - Gull Lakes Recreation Area, Brainerd, Minnesota

The morning of June 17th we left Detroit Lakes and headed to Gull Lakes Campground just north of Brainerd, MN. The campground is operated by the Army Corps of Engineers. We enjoyed our stay here except for the mosquitoes. The campground is in a heavily forested area adjacent to Gull Lake and dam and the mosquitoes really love this environment. We had to apply DEET to all exposed skin before going outside to avoid being eaten alive. While in Brainerd north central Minnesota experienced some of the worst storms in 40 years. For two days we...

Jul 22, 2011 - Move "14" Of The Great River Road Journey

From Crow Wing Lake Campground – Brainerd, MN On Friday we once again moved upriver with this move taking us 130 miles northwest to the small town of Brainerd, MN. This will only be our home base for a short four nights and then we will make our final move on this Great River Road journey Tuesday; July 26. With this move we enter the stretch of the Mississippi River known as the Mississippi Crossings; Little Falls to Grand Rapids, an approximate 145 miles. This area of the Great River is named for its history as a crossway of transportation...

Sep 20, 2009 - Paul Bunyan and Brainerd

Krista said she loves gingerbread, so Sunday morning we baked a gingerbread cake (Gramercy Tavern recipe). The cake baked just fine, but I couldn’t get it out of the pan. So we decided it was just what we were planning to make: a gingerbread trifle. We headed off to visit a couple of Krista’s favorite places. Turned out they were my favorites, too! First we went to Christmas Point. It is a high end store like Eddie Bauer with clothing, furniture, decorating accessories, gourmet foods, cooking stuff, kid’s toys, jewelry, etc. We had lunch...

Sep 19, 2009 - Brainerd with Krista

I drove up to Brainerd and met Krista at her bakery, Brainerd Lakes Cakes. It is a medium size bakery with a reasonable sized kitchen. They share space with Daylight Donuts. She has lots of equipment, but does not have a stove (just one hot plate). She has a nice tool chest, which is only partially filled—give her time. Because of the donut shop, they don’t make anything that would compete with the donuts, so no breakfast goodies: no Danishes, Kugelhopfs, coffee cakes, scones, or muffins, etc. One of the partners makes breads at another...

Sep 19, 2009 - Brainerd--Fun with Krista's Family

I drove to the bakery late Saturday morning, and once again found my knowledge of geography sadly lacking. The bakery is very close to the Mississippi River, and I have to admit I didn't expect it to be in northern Minnesota and so far east. I keep learning geography on this trip. Krista hadn't eaten lunch yet, so she took her break when I came in. We split a sandwich and had cups of soup from Erbert’s and Gerbert’s, a restaurant that shares the building with the bakery. Both sandwich and soup were good. I went to the Grab-a-Java nearby...

Jul 24, 2009 - Criscrossing the Mississippi

We left Detroit Lakes and headed to Brainerd to see Paul Bunyan and his blue ox, Babe. Unfortunately somebody moved them from the center of town to an amusement park called This Old Farm. We got to see Babe (pictures are included), but old Paul was inside the amusement park and it cost money to see him. We didn’t want to see him that bad. As a consolation, we stopped at Paul Bunyan Bowl and Babe’s Restaurant and Lounge. Outside of the bowling alley they had a giant Paul Bunyan with a bowling ball in his hand. We just missed the world’s...

Aug 6, 2008 - Brainerd, MN

On Aug. 4, we drove from Bismarck, ND to Crow Wing campground in MN. The campground is somewhat rustic but situated on a beautiful spot along the Mississippi River, just 200 miles from its headwaters. Brainerd, MN is a very popular tourist area due to the 400 lakes that are in the surrounding area. We didn't see more than 15 of them but it is a beautiful area -- at least in the summer time. We were able to take advantage of one of their fabulous bike paths to take a 13 mile ride.
