Aug 15, 2011 - AEV

Bob has been “jonesin” over these American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) jeeps. In non-technical terms, this company takes jeeps and equips them for the most extreme off-road driving although they do have varying degrees of modifications. In any event, guess where the AEV manufacturing facility is? Wixom, Michigan which is in the Detroit metropolitan area. Guess where we went today? I must admit that the facility was impressive. The jeeps are rebuilt with lift kits and winches on the front, and big tires and steel underplating etc. Of course,...

Aug 28, 2010 - 2010 Western Swing

Well, the coach is polished, all most loaded, and ready to head West again. This year we will be touching on a few new places and revisited to areas we did not leave enough time for a few years ago. Our travels will start heading to Fort Collins, for a few days with my brother Doug and his wife Jackie. After the Labor Day traffic clears, we will head for the Flaming Gorge in Utah, and maybe a day on the Green River. From there it is south to Dinosaur NP in Utah, and then on to Moab, Utah, one of our old favorites. 12 days here to explore...

Jul 7, 2010 - Last Day at Proud Lake

Where has the week gone??? Colleen and Ellie are already back in AZ. Miss them already. We entertained Jay's sister Alice and her husband Keith on Monday. It was nice to sit and relax after a busy weekend. Yesterday, I enjoyed breakfast at "The French Laundry", a restaurant in Fenton, with Stacy Long and her foster child Lee-Lee. Stacy is Colleen's age and her mom was my best friend. Breakfast was delicious and the company wonderful. It was a great way to start the day. Then, in the afternoon we went by Pontiac Lake Rec Area to check out...

Jul 1, 2010 - Proud Lake Rec Area

With only 60 miles to drive today, Jay went fishing this morning and we didn't leave Grass Lake until 1:30pm. We arrived at our site I selected over the Internet to find that it not too level. Jay parked sideways and it is almost level and the levelers made it perfect. Unpacked again and when all set up, Jay went exploring. Found a fishing spot that is a ways away. The campground will be full by tomorrow night for the holiday weekend. After dinner of leftovers, we walked down to the lake and checked it out. Jay tested the water - cool on...

Feb 22, 2010 - Flatulence Fest !!! Say What ???

You would think the last thing you would provide a group of retired “old farts” is more "fuel for the fire”. Well that is exactly what was on the agenda, a Flatulence Fest! More than 30 families prepared dishes from various types of beans. Dishes with names like “Kick Ass Baked Beans”, “Road Kill Chili”, to your typical taco salad, soaps and chili of all types, and even deserts like brownies, and a Kahlua patty filled the tables. My only concern was that Marilyn empty our dish to avoid more "fuel" today, no such luck. For a mere $3.00 you...

Feb 17, 2010 - 997 Miles of Snow !!!

So what does snow and Mardi Gras have in common? They both take place in the South. After 4 days, and 1048 miles we arrived in Gulf Shores. For 997 of those miles there was visible / measurable snow on the shoulders of the road. Something is wrong with this picture. In addition to snow if was cold, at least by their standards, and we lost our primary heating system. Thanks to a local mobile service system is up and running and those poor extended warranty people are out $1,900. Unbelievable how much work is put into Mardi Gras. Some cities...

Feb 12, 2010 - Headed South to "Warmer Weather"

The decision to delay are departure was a smart one. We have been blessed with good roads all the way. We are currently in Nashville staged to make the next attack on the snow in Birmingham, AL ??? Yea they got 2-3 inches today but when talking to the campground people it was already turning to slush. Good thing, Nashville is expecting 3 inches on Sunday. Spent first night in Cincinnati having dinner with Marilyn sister at a outstanding neighborhood stop. Little chilly in Cinci 3 degrees last night. Marilyn said she could appreciate heated...

Feb 9, 2010 - SNOWBOUND !! At Home?

Well, you plan, schedule, and look forward to another adventure and heading south, only to be held up in your driveway. Yea, coach is packed and ready to go, but mother nature has other plans for us at least for a couple of days. Photo shows the 1st of 10" they are predicting. Should be over by tonight, but with 30-35 mph winds predicted down thru Ohio we will hold off till Thursday to start our next adventure. Little different this time as we will be "Staying Put" in Foley, AL, (Gulf Shores) and hoping to some warm weather, and relaxation....

Sep 29, 2009 - Safely Home - Lessons Learned

Leaving Spearfish SD we had 4 solid "Windshield" days, 1,300 miles, ahead to get home for a class reunion. The first 2 days across SD and MN were uneventful and we enjoyed seeing the fields in different state of harvest and the Wind Turbines that lined the highway in MN. These are very impressive being some 300 feet tall with 80 foot blades. Some fields had as many as 30 or more. From experience, there was NO shortage of WIND !! Conditions were so good, Marilyn even got an hour of "Drive Time" and did a great job. Leaving La Crosse, WI...
