Jul 7, 2011 - Petoskey, MI

We left Petersburg, MI at 11:00 this morning - actually on time, for a change! I think this was because we couldn't get satellite reception at this campground because of some trees around our site. What, you might ask, does that have to do with what time we got on the road? Well, Dan was feeling particularly stressed about something last night and didn't sleep well. Consequently, he was up early this morning and we were able to get moving on time. I think the source of his stress was the fact that because we didn't have satellite reception...

2011 Northwest Trip

May 26, 2011 - Petoskey

26 May 11, Petoskey MI: We drove back across the Mackinac Bridge and over to the town of Petoskey to look around and have lunch. The town lived up to reports of it being one the best places in America to retire. It was prosperous and energetic, while having the laid back feeling of a coastal community. And being on the coast of Lake Michigan, the views were spectacular. The only problem with the place seems to be that like most area up this way, winters here are brutal. And the locals love to complain about it, even in May. We drove back...

Oct 12, 2010 - Leisurely travel along Lake Michigan

Today we took a side trip to a small town called Shelby. Here we visited a place called "Shelby Man-Made Gem Factory." Here gems like diamond, rubies, sapphires and others are made by chemists. They take the same compounds that the natural stones have and mix them together and heat them at 5000 degrees. They are able to make any color gems that a customer may want. The owners told us that jewelers have a very hard time distinguishing these gems from the real gems. The one difference we found to be interesting is that real diamonds have...

Sep 1, 2010 - Petoskey, MI and Beautiful Sunset

Written from Mackinaw City Mill Creek RV Park We had the pitter-pat of rain wake us this morning. Can’t complain, we’ve really had some awesome weather since we arrived. The area seems to be in need of rain, so think it was welcomed. We made a run to the local IGA and post office. Our friends Eddie and Tom called to see if we wanted to take a ride with them down to Petoskey, MI on Little Travers Bay. A beautiful town with all kinds of old Victorian houses. We found a Mexican restaurant to have lunch at, looked at a couple RV parks. Eddie...

Aug 22, 2010 - Heading toward friends in Michigan

So this morning I took my $20.00 and went in to play the .01 slot machine. I put the $20.00 in and returned an hour later with $13.07 still in my pocket...Tom worked his Ham Radio Nets for the 1st time since we left the lower 48 back in May. His I.O.O.K. net and his RV Service Net. He had a real big smile on his face. His radio is back. We dumped the RV and hit the road at 10:30am. Today we drove through Minnasota, and Wisconsin. Drove along Lake Superior where the Edmond Fitzgerald Sank. Lake Superior is the largest lake in the World.

Aug 18, 2010 - Petoskey, MI

What do we do today? At breakfast, we ask about fishing. We are told about fishing on Crooked Lake and The Big Lake. I ask, “You mean Round Lake.” I get a strange look. “No, Michigan.” Oh, The BIG Lake. Silly me! Instead of fishing, we end up in Magnus Park. We have access to the beach on The BIG Lake. Our rock book tells us we can find Petoskey Stones here. If John and I lived during the gold rush years, we would have been on our way to California or Alaska! We both stake a claim on the beach and start digging in the sand and rocks. It is...

Aug 17, 2010 - To Petoskey, MI

We fill the gas tank and do our grocery shopping. We are ready to move. It is again very windy! We head to the Mackinac Bridge. As we approach the tollbooth, I see a sign. The speed limit for trucks and RV’s is 20 miles per hour. “John, see if I read that right.” I did. We head across the bridge behind a truck. We both have our flashers on and we are going 20 miles per hour. This is not the fun crossing I thought it would be. Did I mention it is windy? We are now on the Lower Peninsula. We leave the interstate and head to the eastern shore...

Jul 24, 2010 - Sawyer Brown & Jen

Rainy day today. We just hung out at the RV until about 5pm when we headed over to Odawa Casino to see Sawyer Brown. The tickets were $30 each - less $5 for having a players card and we received $10 on our card to gamble in the casino. We were in the last row of seating. The performance was good except for the drunks talking behind us. After we spent our $10 casino money and we both were ahead when we were leaving. We had received 10 x points for our 3 visits so I spent my $20 in the gift shop and Jay spent his $9. Well worth the trips....

Jul 19, 2010 - Petoskey, MI and old friends

Great day here in Northern Michigan. Weather looked a little iffy this morning, but the clouds burned off by the time we arrived at Gordy & Carolyn's house on Lake St in Petoskey. We caught up on what Megan & Craig and Colleen & Kelly were doing. The showed us their beautiful old house and all the improvements they have made in the almost 10 years they have lived there. We walked around the park and marina across from their house, then went for a ride by Bay Point and then to Harbor Springs for lunch at Turkey's Cafe a cute restaurant. Then...

Jul 17, 2010 - Dad's Cousins, so my ?????

My father's mother was one of 6 sisters (Maude, Helen, Irene, Edna, Edith, and Marjorie), his mother being Helen and there being about 20 years between the oldest and the youngest. So it is only natural that when my father was born, his aunt Marjorie was not much older and when the younger ones got married and had children they would be quite a bit younger than my father. So our visit to Petoskey, MI was to join up with his Aunt Edith's children who are his first cousins but mostly the same age as Buzz & I. They get together for a week each...

Jun 25, 2009 - Petoskey, Michigan

The resort town of Petoskey, Michigan has been a lovely change. Not just one section of town but the entire town has the look of well groomed Victorian era. Pictures did not capture the entire scene- homes are elegant, well manicured grounds; businesses of speciality shops, boutiques, restaurants, government reflect a warm charm; it is exciting to watch the locals in combination with the tourists enjoy the clear blue of Lake Michigan. Part of the waterfront is known as sunset bay. Folks sit on benches or on the lush lawn as the great ball...

Jun 22, 2009 - Petoskey, MI - Hearthside Grove Motorcoach Resort

The trip along M31 between Suttons Bay and Petoskey is only 91 miles. Much of the drive is along the coast of Lake Michigan. Along the way, we stopped at Royals roadside market just south of Charlevoix and purchased just-picked strawberries, freshly, out-of-the-oven meat pasties and a still warm strawberry-rubarb pie. There goes the diet again! We then drove just north of Charlevoix and stopped at a roadside park along Lake Michigan and enjoyed a beautiful view while eating our pasties. If you've never enjoyed a pasty (meat pie), we highly...
