May 28, 2018 - Sunday and Monday of Memorial Day Weekend

Sunday and Monday of Memorial Day Weekend (May 27-28) Petoskey, MI Our favorite spot this trip is Petoskey. Just like the Tom Petty song, Walls, some days are diamonds, some days are rocks. We had more diamond days here than in other stops. There’s a 26 mile Little Traverse Wheelway which we accessed by racing across the highway in front of our RV park. Bear liked the shady edges of the road and we walked for several miles with trees on each side. It’s set back from the road so not competition with cars when you walk or ride bikes. If we...

May 25, 2018 - Michigan Jewelry Stone Primer

Here is a brief history of only in Michigan stones: Fordite, Leland Blue and Petoskey. FORDITE $$$ Fordite, also known as Detroit Agate or Motor Agate as they are the paint scrapings from old Ford factors in the days cars were painted by hand. One day an enterprising Ford factory worker chipped off the inches thick paint slag from old painting racks and ground them into shapes, applied polish and made fantastically colorful jewelry. I checked into the stores nearby and a small Fordite pendant costs about $195. eBay carries Corvette...

Spring Trip 2018

May 24, 2018 - Petoskey, MI

May 24-25 Petoskey RV Resort Thursday morning Scott went over to the KOA office to see if we could leave at noon instead of the expected check out time 11am. It’s only 30 some miles south east to Petoskey and there’s a $20 charge if you come early! We left Mackinaw City (population 800, median age 39) at noon checked in at Petoskey RV Resort (population 6,000) at 1:07 pm. We were surprised to find that the resort has 16 park homes for rental and its several miles out of Petoskey’s city limits. Our first town visit was to the waterfront to...

Spring Trip 2018

Aug 30, 2017 - Pure Michigan

After some down time in Frankenmuth and witnessing the eclipse we traveled, upon the recommendation of our friends, Bryan and Matt, to the western coast of Michigan, specifically Empire where we stayed at the Indigo Bluffs RV Park. The park was in close proximity to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and other sites on the Leelanau Peninsula. There is a beautiful drive that affords you views of the immense stretches of dunes and lush, deep forests. The Pierce Stocking Drive winds through 7 miles and provides you access to scenic...

Aug 10, 2017 - Last day on the hunt

Today was our last day to hunt the Petoskey stones. Before going, Pam went to a stone polishing class given right here on the campgrounds. She used on the the stones she found and it turned out pretty nice. We then went back to the secret spot that Bailey's told us about...right in town. We had pretty good luck finding more fossils and stones. I'll say the motorhome has gained about 75-100 additional pounds...in rocks. Happy wife..Happy life!! We pull out tomorrow and have decided to visit the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI on the way...

Aug 8, 2017 - Petoskey Stone Jackpot!!

Today we stopped by Bailey's Rock Shop. Well known for selling Petoskey Stones. Even President Obama received a stone from Baileys. While in there, Pam asked where is a good place to hunt these stones. Well, they gave us the location of a good spot and JACKPOT!! It was a good spot. We both searched and found several nice stones. Enough that I got back into Pam's good graces for forgetting her water shoes.

Aug 7, 2017 - First stone search

Went on our first stone search today. Ended up at the Petoskey State Park public beach area. Very nice beach, but short on the stones of interest. I got a lot of reading done on the beach while Pam searched tirelessly. End result was just a few stone morsels.

2017 Petoskey MI

Aug 6, 2017 - Made it to Petoskey, MI

We fueled up and headed out from the Asphalt Campgrounds. We made a couple stops but decided rather than stopping another night, we would complete the drive to Petoskey. Called the Petoskey KOA and our site didn't have anyone booked so we added the night. Upon arrival, the campgrounds is really nice and well maintained. They have activities for kids, pool, hot tub, pizza nights, horseshoes, and other stuff. Pam has signed up for a couple hour class on Petoskey Stone polishing. I'll be bike riding that day. Looking forward to these elusive...

2017 Petoskey MI

Jun 28, 2017 - Petoskey MI

I did a couple repair thingies, we had leftover pizza for our traditional Friday dinner, went to the aptly named Sunset Park for the 9:31 sunset viewing, then a quick stop at the Bob-In Again Frozen Custard stand for some dessert then headed back to the shack for some bookkeeping work for the little woman and TV for me till I gave up about 11:45 – with sunset at 9:31 it throws off your night time schedule – while she kept trying to get a handle on just where I spent all our money. Saturday was a S-L-O-W day. Michele did some more...

Jul 17, 2016 - Beautiful Sun Setting into Lake Michigan

We're winding up our nine day stay in Petoskey today. It will probably be cloudy tonight so we made sure we went to see the sun set last night into Lake Michigan. All we had to do was go a short ways in our campground to find a spot where the trees didn't block the view. The sun set at 9:26 p.m. All was peaceful and quiet here.

Jul 12, 2016 - Little Traverse Wheelway

Riding a bike trail can be so much fun especially if there is also great scenery passing by. That's what we experienced today as we rode on the bike path that goes by our campground. The total length of the path is 26.65 miles. It follows a trail that was established at the end of the 19th century. Signs reading "No Teaming or Driving" show where the trail begins at each new section. I couldn't find out what that term means but I'll keep my eyes and ears open to try to figure it out. We didn't go far today but what we saw was beautiful. As...

Jul 11, 2016 - On to the Lower Peninsula of Michigan

For two weeks we drove along the south shore of Lake Superior. Next we were on the shore of Lake Huron for three days when we went to Mackinac Island(pronounced Mackinaw). On Saturday we left Strait State Park in St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and drove over the beautiful Mackinac Bridge to begin our trip through the Lower Peninsula. An hour after going over the bridge we arrived in Petoskey, a resort town of 6,000. We are here for nine days, three times longer than any other of our stops. It feels good to rest a bit from...
