2016 RV Adventure

Jun 23, 2016 - Ontonagon, Michigan

I watched a beautiful sunrise as the sun rose out of Lake Superior. We've had perfect weather here these past few days and today promises more of the same, cool, sunny and clear. Today we did something different. We left our campsite at the state park and drove about 17 miles to the village of Ontonagon. We had a key made at the hardware store which seemed to sell anything anyone would ever need except food. Then we went to the historical museum in town that began in the 1950s. It's filled with things from the past like Grandma's Attic...

May 22, 2015 - Keweenaw Peninsula

Well, we sure have been busy the last few days. On Monday the 18th we left Washburn, WI and drove a 100 miles or so to Ontonagon, MI and settled in to the Township campground. Very nice park, water and electric and the rate was $23.00 per night. But wait there’s more…since it is the holiday week they were giving one night free! So instead of paying for 5 nights we only paid for 4, so that made it $18.40 per night. Works for us! The bad part was the rain, wind and cold! It was so cold I just about froze helping with the set up. The wind...

Sep 26, 2012 - Fall colors in the Upper Peninsula

Michigan just gets better and better. We are now in Ontonagon City Park and this has to be one of the nicest parks we have ever been in. On a scale of 0-10, with 10 being the highest, I would rate it 9.9. The only reason it doesn't get a full 10, is the lack of sewer at the site. While the pictures look good, the crisp clean air and sound of Lake Superior lapping a few feet away, makes this an idyllic spot. We were going to stay a couple of days, but we may stay a couple of weeks, it's that great. This evening, we ate dinner at Syl's...

Dream On

Jul 29, 2011 - Porcupine Mountains

This morning our friends headed out to go biking on a trail somewhere in the Porcupine Mountain area, and next thing I knew they were pulling back into the campground and I thought they had forgotten something. Turns out they saw a little dog standing on the side of the road with her front leg tucked up underneath her and they figured she had been hit by a car. They stopped and picked her up and brought her back to the campground to ask the owners if they knew of a veterinarian where they might take her to have her checked out. They took...

2011 Northwest Trip

Jul 27, 2011 - Ontonagon, MI

Last night was so cold that we ALMOST turned on the heat. Before we got on the road this morning, I drove back to the Fish House and bought some smoked lake trout and whitefish to have for hors d'oeuvres later tonight. We had a three-hour drive from Munising to Ontonagon, MI. It was cloudy and overcast most of the day. Driving across the Upper Peninsula is really boring - there really is not much to see. We arrived at our campground around 3:15pm, and about an hour later our friends from Bay Harbor (Ray & Cindy and Sue & Tawnee) returned...

July 17, 2011 stayed over at Ontonagon, MI Today was a lazy day for us, we decided to do nothing but lay around, watch the race, movie and nap. We did run down to the store to get fishing license, and some medicine for me as I have had stomach ache for the last couple days. So tonight we fished off the dock, on the Ontonagon River we only had a couple nibbles, they say there are Sturgeon, Walleye and bass in the river, but they didn’t bite for us, may give it another go in the morning, our license are only good from 6 tonight til 6 tomorrow...

Sep 14, 2009 - Porcupine Mountains State Park, Upper Michigan

The day started out overcast, but soon cleared up and the sun came out. We headed toward Porcupine Mountains State Park. There, we hiked up a mountain 500 feet above Lake of the Clouds; an enormous lake that runs through rolling mountains that in a couple will turn orange, and yellow, and red with Autumn colors. We are a little early for the show, but the area is still beautiful, and the hiking good. We also climbed up a tower to get a view of the forest, and met a couple from Kansas City, traveling by car. They enjoy staying in remote...
