Jun 24, 2019 - Midland & Bay City, MI - June 23-24

After Alpena, MI we continued traveling down the western edge of Lake Huron stopping this time at Bay City, MI. However, our best campground bargain in the area was located to the west of Bay City in a town called Midland, MI. At the campground we met a nice couple in the campsite opposite us. They were there to see their granddaughter play in a soccer tournament. They offered us a beer and pulled out two more chairs and we chatted for quite a while with them. The campground also offered indoor swimming and a hot tub. The pool was too cold...

Aug 8, 2014 - Dow Gardens

Before Karen and I went to Dow Gardens we ate lunch at a lovely restaurant in Midland called Cafe Zinc. Karen chose the place from research she had done on the net. Our lunches were delicious - we gave the place two thumbs up. Admission to Dow Gardens is $5.00 or $10.00 for an entire year. For those who live closer that is a true bargain. The Gardens are part of the estate of Herbert H. Dow, founder of Dow Chemical Company. His son Alden, a famed architect, shared his father's belief that the "entire beauty of the Gardens should never be...

Jun 6, 2010 - Home Again

Well, I think I did it! Looks like text & photos are in place. The weather stayed wet for most of today (Sunday) - we hadn't washed the motorhome since uncovering it, so after unpacking today we started that job. A couple of passing neighbors thought we were nuts washing it with the rain pouring down - but it was all soaked up good! Looks much better now - I am happy. Now for the packing - as you can tell we don't have very much room - but it works for us! At least we are pretty sure there are no water leaks anywhere in the motorhome -...

Jun 4, 2010 - Preparation Time

June 4 to June 6, 2010 We left Midland about noon, sunny & high 70s – perfect day to go camping. We had the tires, shocks, springs & all belts checked to be sure everything was in good condition. We have planned a 3-day dry run to be sure everything works as expected. The drive along Lake Huron was beautiful as always. We arrived at Tawas Point State Park about 1:30 PM; found a nice level site, Ron plugged in the elec. & I pulled out the awning-let the weekend begin! Then the sun disappeared & the sprinkles started! Our usual 1st day of...

Oct 14, 2008 - Day 185 Beaverton Day 4 Midland

Day 185 Tuesday 14th October Beaverton Day 4 Midland pg 51 MN10 Today was refrigerator buying day, sadly this morning Gus and Jan’s old one had curled up its toes for the last time. We all hopped in the truck and headed for down-town Midland, which is around a 20 min drive. After checking out the deals in several shops, as we all would they found the one they wanted in the last store Lowes. Steve and Gus lifted it into the back of Gus’s truck and we once again we were homeward bound, to do the big swap-over. It looks good, and it’s bigger...

Aug 8, 2008 - Chuck's Mom

We left Bill’s about 8:00. (see we can get up and out early) and headed back to Midland. Sue had tacos ready for us and then we went to see Chuck’s mom. Sue said the last couple of says were good ones. Fortunately, today was another good day. What a difference from the last time I saw her. They were bringing her back from lunch and Chuck stepped in to roll her the rest of the way. When she got to her room she says she “wants to walk”. Chuck gives her the walker and off she goes, us trailing behind her. We walked down to the aviary. She was...

Aug 3, 2008 - Smith Reunion

Reunion August 3 Kerry and Jill (Sue’s girls) went to get Chuck’s mom this morning. She was kind of sleepy so they came back. They left about an hour later, hoping she was going to be more alert and ready to go. She has been looking forward to the reunion for so long we hated to see her miss it. There were about 50 people there, 25 of them being Chuck, Sue and Russ’s kids and grandkids. Bill and Jamie, Brittany, Bryce and Owen, Shelley and Jeff, (Mark and Janette & Elizabeth), Sara and AJ, and Brian were there for Chuck’s side this year....

Aug 2, 2008 - Lewiston Timberfest

Saturday August 2, 2008 Ugh, morning came early as usual. Why is someone sitting on my head (or so it feels like it). I woke up at 7:08, Brittany was suppose to come wake me and we were suppose to go for a walk. She just finished a week at the Police Academy camp (you get to try it before you decide) and she said she wanted to keep it up, except the 5:30 am part. Well, she never showed and I went back to sleep. I woke up again at 8:30 and I knew I had pancake duty in 30 minutes. I got up and made pancakes in the MH and we brought them into...

Jul 15, 2008 - Chicago, IL to Midland, MI

Wrap Up: Ron really enjoys the numbers game and spends several hours figuring everything, both anticipated and actual. He usually comes very close - but arriving home 10 minutes ahead of his schedule was a little much this year! I don't think estimating that is such a good idea - he pushes to get home pretty hard as it is, trying to "beat" his guesstamate just puts us over the top! Ron's Estimate Actual price of gas per gallon $4.20 per gallon (average) $4.19 total gasoline costs $3,000 $3,000.60 campgrounds fees $750 $579 miscellaneous...

Jun 24, 2008 - heading West - Midland to Ludington!

I have been job hunting & its really hard to accept a new job & then state that I am going on a 3-wk vacation in July. So we moved our trip ahead almost 2 weeks & decided to leave on June 24th. This put me into high gear getting food prepared, motorhome packed & house cleaned. Our plans were to leave home ~ 4 pm & drive to Ludington, MI for the night, so that we can catch the 8 AM ferry to Wisconsin. I had a lot of errands to run in the early afternoon & got home later than anticipated, so I grabbed my purse & items I'd just purchased for...

Aug 7, 2007 - Sunday August 5...The Smith Reunion

Finally campsite internet!!!! Sunday, August 5 Hmm,. To be totally honest I am trying to remember three days backwards. I can do it, just be patient and forgive me for the past and present tense in the same paragraph. I was not able to get back to the Midland library, so it is actually August 7th. Okay, today was the reunion. It was great, it was suppose to have rained, but it didn't really happen. Maybe a cloud and drizzle, but it cleared up by the time everyone arrived. They are always talking about this "bad weather" in MI. I tell you,...

Aug 7, 2007 - Saturday August 4

Saturday.... We got up and went to the Farmer's Market. It was fun. I love fresh food. I bought some cherries, nectarines, a cinnamon roll (well, it was fresh). Chuck bought more peppers & tomatoes. Chuck and Ed made salsa Friday night and it was pretty spicy, so they are trying to tone it done. Now it looks like they will be at the Market next week selling salsa. We have lots, but it sure is good. Chuck asks, "How long does our salsa keep at home", I asked "Is Tina coming over?" Tina... that's right she won't be there when I get home....
