Jun 24, 2019 - Van Riper State Park - Michigan, June 20-21

We did not have a reservation for the 2 nights between Duluth and Newberry. MI. The route had not been firmed up so I didn’t want to waste a deposit. I finally made a reservation for Van Riper State Park on Lake Michigamme. How lucky that turned out. It is a beautiful family park and as close to camping as we have been on this trip. The drive from Duluth to Van Riper took us through Ashland, WI and Lake Superior comes up almost to the highway. We were very surprised to see the water so close to the roadbed but then it was kind of cool too....

Sep 22, 2017 - Around the bend to the other side of the lake

The day started out with a pretty sunrise. And then the predicted rain showed up -- in torrents. We held off packing up to leave to make sure we weren't going to get either blown or floated off the road. But by 11:00 if had lightened up and so off we went. The fall colors weren't very far along on the north shore but got prettier and prettier the farther we went. Stopped for the night in Champion, Michigan, but apparently it is such a hole-in-the-road place that this program couldn't find it. I called from the road about half an hour before...

Jul 28, 2014 - Michigamme, MI

We traveled 80 miles from Munising to Michigamme, MI where we stayed three nights. Our first night and the next day we had heavy rain but our last day here it cleared so we could tour the area. In the morning, we car caravanned through the copper mining country. We stopped at a rest area where there was a giant snow stick that keeps track of how many feet of snow that they get each winter in the area, which is over 30 feet. We took the Brockway Mountain Drive to an overlook of the copper mining area with Lake Superior in the distance. They...

Jul 28, 2014 - Michigamme, Michigan

Our first night in the small town of Michigamme we had dinner at the local Lutheran church. They did a fantastic job of feeding weary travelers and then a very talented lady who performs in Las Vegas entertained us with songs that we all remembered. The following morning many of our caravaners joined them for Sunday service. On Monday we drove almost 250 miles in our cars to see the views in Copper Country. The area is no longer mined but Fort Wilkins which was built to protect the area in 1844 has been restored. That evening we met friends...

Aug 5, 2006 - Munising, Michigan

Saturday, August 5, we drove to Munising, Michigan. It was a long drive about 5 hours on state and local roads, no freeways. We passed a truck going the opposite direction and he through up a rock and it put a crack in my side of the windshield. It was a small crack but over time, it grew in length until it was up in my view. The other good news was that the rear-view monitor went out again but I just changed the fuse on that and it is working. I need to get that checked out to see why it is blowing fuses. We arrived at the Wondering Wheel...

Jun 23, 2006 - Michigamme, MI

We stayed at the Lake Michigamme RV Resort in Michigamme, MI (on the upper penninsula of MI). Beautiful campground - some sites right on the lake. But, since it was the weekend, we were not right on the lake, but you could see it through the trees. It really did not matter, since it was a short walk to the beach. Kallie was able to swim in another lake. While the park was very pretty, it did have a slight (??!!) problem. Deer flys, biting black flys and misquitos. We got eaten alive, and that was even after we used bug spray. We made the...
