Aug 14, 2017 - Menominee and Marinette

It has been a quiet and pleasant week in Menominee. The weather has been generally good with a coupled of days with some rain. The wifi has been so good that we have been able to watch Netflix on our television set. And we have found a couple of nice activities in the area. Menominee lies in Michigan on the north side of the Menominee River. Route 41 southbound passes through the town and crosses a bridge over the river into Marinette, WI. We crossed the bridge and went to a Wisconsin Welcome Center located on a small island in the river....

Aug 8, 2017 - Menominee and Slide/Leveler Issues

We had a little problem with the Phaeton today. Yesterday I had to apply a duct tape solution to the passenger-side rear-view mirror that I banged up last week. When we were about ready to leave Mackinaw City, the rear jacks would not fully retract. I called Tiffin for help and their technician, Corey, talked me through the emergency retracting process that enabled us to get going, albeit an hour behind schedule. It was a nice drive on route 2 along the north shore of Lake Michigan, that included a stop at a small store to try some pork...

Menominee, MI Palms Book State Park is home to Kitch-iti-kipi, The Big Spring. We followed the path and soon came to a beautiful emerald green pool. It is 200’ across, 40’ deep and is Michigan's largest freshwater spring. Over 10,000 gallons a minute gush from fissures in the underlying limestone. The flow continues throughout the year at a constant 45° F. A hand-powered raft lets visitors slowly move the raft over the springs 40’ below. The raft is powered by turning a large wheel that controls the cable on which the raft moves. There were...

Sep 6, 2014 - Menominee, Michigan Light

We picked up another lighthouse for our list today. The Menominee North Pier Lighthouse is located in the harbor of Menominee, Michigan. The station was first lit in 1877. The current structure and its still operational light was lit in 1927, and automated in 1972. It is also sometimes called the "Menominee (Marinette) North Pierhead Light". The foundation is a concrete pier. The 34-foot tall octagonal cast iron building is marked in a distinctive red, with a black lantern and white base. We also visited parts of downtown and took a few...

Jun 16, 2008 - Menominee, MI

We woke to another wonderful sunny day in Maple Grove. Unfortunately we had to hit the road and leave this great weather behind. Before long we had crossed into Wisconsin and the skies had turned cloudy. This was our second time through Wisconsin on our sabbatical, only this time we took more of a northern route. We originally thought we would go through Green Bay, WI on our way to Michigan, but, in the interest of time, we changed our minds and veered north before entering the city. The drive through Wisconsin was as beautiful in late...
