Aug 12, 2019 - Visiting our "new neighbors"

Our next stop was to visit our new friends. Mike and Pat Mandjack are our neighbors, living across the street from us at our new home in Bradenton, FL. They invited us to stay with them as they have electric hookup for us and water. We were treated royally as we learned about the area, going to evening music concerts and touring the area. One highlight was attending a bonsai club meeting with them. John golf a couple of times. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

Aug 21, 2014 - Silver Lake Sand Dunes Area

We had a short but pretty ride down the coast to the town of Mears to Silver Lake Resort and Campground. We went to the Little Sable Point Lighthouse which at 115 feet tall is the tallest brick lighthouse on Lake Michigan. Terry and I walked along the lake shore and were once again amazed at the vast lake with its huge freighters in the distance. Lakes at home are definitely not like these. We then decided to take a 7 miles dune buggy ride. Mac Woods Dune Rides offer a fun way to see the dunes and hear about the wildlife and vegetation from...

Aug 20, 2014 - Mears, MI

We drove 106 miles to the Silver Lake Campground in Mears for two nights. While there we went into Silver Lake and took a dune buggy ride with MacWood's Dune Rides. The ride was seven miles long and lasted about 40 minutes. We went up over the beautiful Silver Lake Dunes that cover approximately 2,000 acres along Lake Michigan with dune sand. Our driver was excellent, stopping along the way to tell us what we were seeing and facts about the dunes. While we were at Silver Lake we drove out to the Little Sable Point Lighthouse which is the...

Sep 21, 2011 - More of Western Michigan

We set our sights on heading south today to explore more of the beautiful western shores of Michigan. The forecast for the week has been between 40-50% rain and showers daily, but when the sun unexpectedly broke through the clouds yesterday, we were outta here; destination already determined. Taking our usual “furthest point first” rule, we drove along the quickest route to get us to Silver Lake and the little village of Mears. Again, a very scenic drive and couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw fields and fields of “spargel” fronds; or...

Jul 3, 2011 - Holland, MI to Silver Lake State Park, MI 70 miles

As we drove to Silver Lake we saw oil dereks en route! We almost never found a campsite b/c of the holiday. We got the last campsite (handicapped and held til last minute) at Silver Lake. This place reminds me of the John Candy movie “The Great Outdoors”, except with sand dunes. This is the 1st place we've seen Aspen trees. The big draw is the off-road vehicles (ORV) and ATV sand dunes. There are lots of jeeps with V8’s cruising around with stickers that say “Got Sand?” So, not much quieter and even more fireworks; but much less...

Jun 15, 2011 - Silver Creek RV Resort, Mears, MI

/// Silver Creek RV Resort Mears, MI Wednesday - June 15 Low Temperature: 61 degrees High Temperature: 70 degrees Rain: .10" (Measured after we set up camp.) A travel day. We woke to overcast skies and by the time I started to hook-up for departure it started to rain. We departed Shipshewana at 9:45 AM during a full rain shower. We ran out of the rain shortly after we crossed the state line into Michigan and managed to stay ahead of the rain for most of today's trip. Road conditions today, for the most part, were good. Traffic was...

Jun 13, 2011 - Silver Creek at Silver Lake

We can always tell when it is time to move on because we start knowing our way around town without getting lost. Today, we moved north up the coast of Lake Michigan to Silver Lake, about 80 travel miles. We chose this stop because there is yet another perfect 10 rated RV park here. There are several in Michigan in fact and we like to check them out. -- The first thing we noticed as we headed out was how much the gas prices have gone down. When we first got here, it was $4.19 a gal., but today, John filled up for $3.79. -- We traveled up...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Aug 12, 2010 - East Coast of Lake Michigan

We left Joliet Monday morning and traveled east along I-80 into Indiana and then north into Michigan. We stayed along the coast of Lake Michigan although we did not see the lake through the trees. We made a couple of stops in towns along the way to get glimpse of the lake. We arrived at Timberlake Campground in Mears late since we did not realize we switched to EDT. We will now be in Eastern Time for a few months. Don, the owner/manager, was nice enough to open the gate and lead us to what he thought was some of the best sites left for us...

Aug 25, 2009 - Sand Dunes off Lake Michigan

Silver Lake State Park has an area for visitors to be able to ride dune buggies (rent on in town) and another area for pedestrians to hike or use the beach. At the very end is the Little Sable (saw-bull) Lighthouse but one has to drive there. Part of the park is leased for the exclusive use of Mac Wood's Dune Rides. For $16, you get 40-50 minutes on a custom dune buggy that fits up to 22 people with a driver who explains things along the way. This was fun, as some of the ride was like being on a small roller coaster. I learned how the dunes...

Aug 20, 2008 - sand dunes

Well, we now have steps that work. After our night at camp Camping World, we were in line to get work done at about 8:15. As they were working us in, we finally got the tech Slim out to finish with the wiring. He was very professional and knowledgeable and got the problem fixed in about an hour. Then it was time to pay. The girl behind the counter started figuring the hours and had about 5 hours. Skip said he was not paying that much when the catalog stated that they would install steps from scratch for about half that amount. Lori said she...

Jul 20, 2006 - Silver Lake Sand Dunes

Took a vacation over on Lake Michigan. We stayed at Silver Creek RV Resort over near Silver Lake Sand Dunes. I wish I would have taken some pictures of the campground; it was quite the resort. The full hookup sites had nice clean concrete slabs, but prestine lawns; I thought we were parked on a golf course. We were not pulling a car, but the short bike ride to Silver lake and to Lake Michigan was fun. We rented a dune buggy for a few hours of fun on the dunes. I should have had more pictures, but my camera would have probably gotten trashed...
