Jul 10, 2015 - Tunnel of Trees

Yesterday we rested up, I went to Kalkska to the Cherry Store. It is great - lots of local produce, a large garden center with gazing balls and everything else as well as plants, I bought some cherry salsa and fresh baked bread. Today we took a drive up to Charlevoix, hoping to see some of the boat poker run. I guess it's tomorrow but there was a large art fair being set up along the shoreline - no parking on side streets, road construction and stop and go traffic. We saw the town and went on. Drove to Petoskey and went to the museum,...

2015 Eagle trip

Jul 8, 2015 - Sleeping Bear Dunes

It's a beautiful day - cool and clear. We first drove to Traverse City to check out the National Cherry festival. Not much going on today that interested us. Parking is $15, mainly a midway with vendors, we drove on to the Michigan State research station south of Suttons Bay to take an orchard tour. This is part of the festival and buses were coming in and leaving, lots of children as it's kids day. We were able to go through one section of cherry samples and had Moomers Ice Cream (from Traverse City), some cherry pie, cherry cake, cherry...

Jul 7, 2015 - Gaylord

Joel says he's familiar with Gaylord as they had a plant there at one time. It is a larger town and has a Walmart and Lowes but we didn't go to them - went to the main attraction which is the Call of the Wild Museum. There is an amusement area just outside so this place is designed for children but the exhibiits were applicable to adults, many native animals displayed in their habitat with descriptive info and many with audio horns to hear their calls. One animal displayed was the "fisher" that is a natural predator of the porcupine, looks...

Jul 6, 2015 - Golf and Cherries at the 45th parallel

We had an easy drive yesterday and the traffic on Hwy 131 was mainly going south - there was an accident on that side at one point with a multi mile backup - glad we are going north. On the way we drove through Kalkaska and saw a Michigan Cat location. It's hilly here, similar to the UP, and heavily forested. Our campground has Christmas trees between every site and a large hill just south of us covered with trees. We also saw an oil pump jack on the edge of the campground, apparently there is a natural gas deposit in this area. Today is...

Travel West 2014

Aug 1, 2014 - Mancelona, MI July

Our trip up from Howe, IN was very easy. We arrived at Whispering Pine Campground, in Mancelona, Michigan, about 2:30, got set up and enjoyed our evening in the park. We had stayed here in 2009, in fact in the same site... pictures attached. We've been trying to walk every day while we've been on the road and have been pretty successful at that goal. This park has a huge wooded area next to it that is full of snow-mobile paths, which make for excellent walking paths, so we've had lots of opportunity to get our walking done in some beautiful...

Feb 23, 2009 - Getting on the road!

Feb. 23rd..finally, after 11 months of booking specific Florida State Park sites, ready to hit the road, again. Unlike the weather on the day we pulled the motor home out of winter storage, today was beautifully clear, crisp, and definitely cold. Two days prior was one of northern Michigan blizzards of 2009; horizontal snow, strong winds, and awful visibility. Driving a white motor home home in such weather, well...I'm sure you can jut picture it! We pulled out of Jimmy and Steve's, Elite Body Shop in Mancelona around 11:30 a.m.; later...
