Aug 29, 2016 - Ishpeming/Marquette of the UP

Ishpeming is a city in Marquette County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 6,470 at the 2010 census. This is down from a higher population in the 1950s and 1960s when the economically supportive iron ore mines employed more workers. A statue of a Native American figure, erected in 1884 in the small town square, is referred to as "Old Ish". The name Ishpeming comes from the Ojibwe word ishpiming, meaning "above", "in the air" or "on high". Ishpeming is considered the birthplace of organized skiing in the United States and...

Jun 21, 2016 - Marquette, MI and Pictured Rocks in Munising Bay

Today we drove to Marquette, Michigan, home to Northern Michigan University. This university has a completely enclosed football stadium, called Superior Dome. This is also the training facility for the U. S. Olympic Weight-lifting team. This facility does not have the seating capacity of the Super Dome, but it is very impressive for a small university. Marquette is a very attractive and people friendly place with lots of walking/biking trails that go beside Lake Superior and go for miles and miles with shaded rest areas and picnic...

Jun 20, 2016 - Ishpeming, Michigan

Arrived in Michigan yesterday afternoon. Last night we had high gusting winds which carried into all of today. A wind advisory was issued for 60 mph winds. We are still doing things near and around Lake Superior. Today we toured the Keweenaw Peninsula. We drove to Houghton, MI, home to Michigan Tech Universtiy and it is the birthplace of professional hockey. We crossed the water to the city of Hancock, which is the home to Findlandia University, which was started in 1896. We went to Eagle Harbor. The Eagle Harbor Light House was built in...

2016 RV Trip

Aug 15, 2015 - Saturday, Ishpeming MI

Another beautiful day in the UP, warm during the day and cool at night couldn’t ask for better weather. Some history on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Toledo. The Toledo War (1835–36), also known as the Michigan–Ohio War, was the almost bloodless boundary dispute between the U.S. state of Ohio and the adjoining territory of Michigan. When Michigan petitioned for statehood in 1835, it sought to include the disputed territory within its boundaries; Ohio's congressional delegation was in turn able to stall Michigan's admission to the...

Aug 14, 2015 - Friday, Ishpeming MI

What beautiful mornings here in the UP. Time to break camp and drive back to Munising to take the Pictured Rocks Cruise today. We stopped at a Family Value store in Munising to park the motorhome and just use the truck to get around, this works great in these little towns. I elected not to take the cruise today, didn’t want to get locked in a boat for four hour cruise, I didn’t have a very good night last night. This all worked out alright because I had a tire on the truck that was not holding air so I went and got it fixed, had a nail in...

Jul 29, 2014 - Ishpeming, MI - Country Village RV Park

It was an uneventful 207 mile drive from Two Rivers, WI to Ishpeming, MI and we crossed the date line back in to the Eastern time zone as well. There wasn't much to see on the way so not many pictures. We are staying at the Country Village RV Park which is a large RV park that is part of a huge complex containing the RV Park, restaurant, brewery/restaurant, inn, etc. We have a 50 amp site with water and a dump on the way out. Satellite acquisition was a snap and we have adequate Verizon which varies substantially for some reason. The park...

Jul 11, 2014 - Ishpeming, MI and Pictured Rocks

We left Petoskey headed to the western side of the UP. Our campground was in Ishpeming, a suburb of Marquette. Not much in Ishpeming, but we found Marquette to be a delightful city with a vibrant downtown with several restaurants overlooking Lake Superior. On our second day, we headed to Munising, MI (about 20 miles east of Marquette) to see the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The National Lakeshore has many trails and waterfalls to see on foot, but the best way to see the Lakeshore is by boat, so we took a tour. The highlights of the...

Jul 8, 2014 - Enjoying Michigan

We’ve been slowly working our way through Michigan. We’ve been in the state for almost a month. Despite the cloudy and rainy days, I am really enjoying our travels here. So far, it has been a good combination of exploring large and small cities. It seems that we have to double our days in each city due to inclement weather. One day it is bright and sunny the next day the temperature drops 10+ degrees and it pours. Rain, did I mention rain? There is absolutely no drought here. We had a laid back stay in Sault Ste Marie during the holiday...

Jul 24, 2013 - West to Ishpeming

It was an easy run from Munising to Ishpeming with an intermediate stop at the Super Wal-Mart to have lunch and stock up on groceries. We got checked into our home for the next several nights at Country Village RV Park. This is a lovely park with shopping within walking distance.

Aug 7, 2012 - Cheboygan and a bachelor party

We've had a fun stay in Cheboygan, MI at a campground on a bike path. While Rick rode quads and go karts at a weekend bachelor party weekend for Paul Jozwiak (son of our friends Doug and Ellen Jozwiak), Tina enjoyed daily rides on the bike path and lots to reading time under the huge shade tree in our site. We had a couple of days together too and explored the town by bicycle. Rick also changed out the muffler on the Jeep. When he changed the catalytic converter on Virginia City, MT he noticed the muffler had a hole so we had one shipped to...

Summer 2012

Aug 1, 2012 - Ishpeming, MI

I think we set a record this morning by leaving before 7am! Since we woke up early we decided to get up and on the road to Ishpeming. When we explored Michigan's upper peninsula in 2005 we had no idea we would be here so often (every year since 2009), but it is a cooler summer drive than using a more southerly route so we use it often. It helps that it is a pretty drive with many things to see and do. We are staying at a campground we found in 2009 that has a restaurant/brewery and a movie theater within walking distance. The movie Ted is...

Summer 2012

Sep 5, 2011 - Happy Labor Day

It doesn't seem possible that we have been up here in Ishpeming for almost three months and this is our last day. Where did the summer go? It is definitely fall here. The leaves are changing rapidly and there is frost in the forecast for tonight. So, even though we are sad to leave here, it's time to head on down south where it is warmer. It is particularly hard to say good bye to all the good friends we have made these past two summers. Since we are planning on touring the western states, most likely we will not be back here next summer....
