Sep 2, 2010 - Ho! Hum!

This is one of those days when it is hard to have a blog as I don’t know what to write. We are just going day-to-day – enjoying life. Nothing exciting is happening. We arrived Sunday at the Elks and got set up and then packed up the truck with dirty laundry and computers and headed for our daughter’s house. We stayed there until Wed. night when we brought our clean laundry and computers back to the RV. In the meantime we got the dings fixed on the truck and ate some wonderful food at her house. Now we are here at the RV, going to have the...

Aug 30, 2010 - Moving day

Sorry this is a day late – life just got in the way. Let’s see – I left you on Thursday night we were due to put up some more lights on the Camp Store and then I was off to the dermatologist. Well, that’s what we did. I was right about the dermatologist – just old lady spots – but she did a biopsy on one and froze off two more – so I officially have a sore back. Saturday we cleaned the trailer, truck and cottage. Because you know they had to mow the grass right outside our door so it was tracked all over. No matter if you wipe your feet AND...

Aug 26, 2010 - The Deck - Final

Sorry I’m late with the blog update today. Overslept this morning and didn’t get a chance to get it done. Also wanted to get some more pictures so that added to my procrastination. First – fantastic news. Ron went to the orthopedic Dr. on Wednesday and got his cast off. The x-rays showed new bone growth and healing. He was fitted for a brace, which he has to wear for the next 6 weeks. He also has daily exercises to do to strengthen and loosen the wrist. Right now it is pretty stiff and tender. But he is glad to be able to take it off to...

Aug 22, 2010 - The Deck

Good Morning. We have had a great few days since we “talked” to you. Thursday we weeded the flowerbed at the entrance to the Camp. It was full of sticker bushes so I got some scratches on my arms. We got two big bags of weeds out of the bed. We probably could have gotten more but my back was giving out. After lunch (and a rest in the AC) we started working on the deck at the big lodge building. Cutting out the bad boards went pretty well. It was a shocker to us that the deck is made of 1-inch boards instead of the 2-inch we thought. So it...

Aug 19, 2010 - Global Village

One of the areas here at the Howell Camp is the Heifer Project Global Village. You can read more about it at http://www.howellnaturecenter.org/challengeprograms/globalvillage.htm. We live right next door to the Peruvian House and tend the garden there. As you can see it is mostly melons. But there are some tomatoes, peppers and squash, too. I've been trying to grow some beans but the bunnies or something really like them so they are going by the wayside. We ate the first green peppers last night. I hope to be able to get some melons before...

Aug 15, 2010 - Day to day stuff

Nothing exciting is happening (Thank God) we are just going day by day enjoying what we are doing. Ron’s arm is healing. He is managing quite nicely despite the varied times when I have to add another hand, as he can’t quite manage things. Plans have been made and the maps have been adjusted for a trip to SD instead of MO to attend the interment service for Ron’s mom. We had to cut short a couple days with our daughter and son in IL, but at least we do get to see them, to spend some time in Marion. Tentative plans are to attend the...

Aug 12, 2010 - More curves in the road

Monday afternoon we received a call from Ron's sister in CA. She had just called the paramedics and they transported their Mother to the hospital. Mom had been living with Renee since Dad passed away in 2000, first in her own trailer in the back yard and more recently in the house. About an hour later, the call came that Mom had passed away. Her blood pressure had just decreased and she became unresponsive and then died. She was 92 1/2. The services will be later in September when we will meet in SD to bury her ashes next to her husband, a...

Aug 8, 2010 - Relay for Life

Ron is doing well. I guess as well as you can with two bandaged wrists. The swelling has gone down a lot and he can move the fingers on both hands. That makes it easier to hold a fork and feed oneself. I still have to cut up the food - but he has been eating on his own. He also needs help when dressing and. of course, in the shower. We wrap up his arms in plastic garbage bags and tape them to keep the splints dry. Anyway we arrived at our daughter's house on Wednesday evening. It is so much better here with a bigger bath and bedroom. We are...

Summer 2010 Travels

Aug 5, 2010 - Sometimes life throws you a curve.

Things were going along very well on Monday morning. We had 4 big projects that would last us for a couple of weeks, we had started on the first one and had headed into Howell to Lowe's for supplies. We had the Lowe's card but it didn't work quite right. Instead of giving us tax exempt status at the check out counter - we would have to go to the service desk and have the taxes taken off the bill. Ron took the big piece of plywood out to the truck while I dealt with a very slow person at the service desk. He got the plywood loaded OK but his...

Aug 1, 2010 - How does my garden grow??

One part of the Howell Center is the Global Village - part of the Heifer Project. There are houses from various parts of the world in this area. (This will be a future post.) Anyway, the Peruvian house is close to our RV, along with some alpacas and rabbits and a garden. Dick Grant, the Director, asked me to take over the garden, so we have been working on it in the evenings. As you can see by the first picture, it was pretty well overgrown with grass and weeds, so our first thing was to pull weeds. I then added some tomatoes that I found...

Jul 29, 2010 - The Raptor Center

We've spent a couple of days around the Raptor Center. It is a hexagon shaped building with outdoor wing housing Michigan birds. (See pictures above) The first day was a recon day. Dick showed us the pieces of the display unit that someone had donated and asked if we thought we could put it together. It was like a giant put-together-furniture piece. As we walked out of the center we remarked that it needed some flowers around it. So that is what we did the first day. We will probably be back to the center as it is build at the bottom of a...

Jul 25, 2010 - First week at Howell

Our first week at Howell Camp has been fun and exhausting. It isn't that we have worked so hard (altho at times we have) it is the weather. The temps have been in the high 80's and the humidity in the 80 and 90%. These old bones just aren't used to that. Thursday morning we met with Dick the Director and he showed us their new bus. They rent it for $1 per year from the Alexandria Foundation. The bus had been used out in the Tetons and therefore had skylights for people to see the beauty of the mountains. Well, in this heat - the skylights...
