Aug 18, 2014 - Michigan

August 8, 2014, Another fairly long travel day as we made our way out of Canada and into the good ol USA. It’s good to be home. It took us one hour and fifty five minutes to get across the bridge in Sarnia, Ontario and through US customs in Port Huron, MI. They asked a lot of questions but only took a cursory look in the truck, and not at all in the camper. We found a campground in Algers, MI called Greenwood Campground. It was rustic and small but we did get full hook up for $25 per night. For the first time in a long time we were able to...

Thursday, August 2, 2012 Houghton Lake, Michigan We stayed three days, not one. Hospitality was good, but it took some time to work through the technical details to get the Kingdome and the new satellite receiver to work. We are departing Houghton Lake and heading back to the west coast of Michigan to enjoy a few days before our grandchildren come for a visit. The Packmans entertained us in the evening as the weather was ideal for having a campfire and enjoying the wonderful weather. We sat around the campfire telling RV stories and...

We went to Houghton Lake to visit some RV friends (Jerry and Shirley Friedman) who were visiting relatives there. Since they were familiar with the area, Jerry and Shirley became our 'tour guides'. One evening we went to a unique display by a pair of local artists. The lady, Laura Bell, creates her art using dryer lint. She buys colored towels and launders and dries them separately to get the colors she needs. She then glues the colored lint in place to 'draw' the picture. Ripley's Believe It or Not bought her previous artwork, 'The Last...

We are now back in the Eastern Time Zone. We left Duluth, Saturday and continued our journey eastward on Highway 2. We entered Wisconsin in a rain storm that stayed with us about the whole day. The highway meanders back and forth between Wisconsin and Michigan. Late in the afternoon we entered the UP for good. UP is what the locals call the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The UP is bordered to the north by Lake Superior and to the south by Lake Michigan. As we got close to our campground in Escanaba, MI, the rain stopped and the sun made an...

Aug 14, 2008 - Houghton Lake, MI - Houghton Lake Travel Park

We arrived in Houghton Lake two days before the Herrick cousin's reunion. Much to our surprise we found another Alpine (Jerry and Shirley Friedman) parked near us. Very nice couple. She is from Houghton Lake and here to see family and for a class reunion. It is a very small world - we had run into them before in 2006 in Jasper, Alberta, Canada when we were on our way to Alaska. We met Ingrid's brother's in-laws, Donna and Bob Sanborn, at their cottage on Higgins Lake. Much to our surprise, both Ingrid's brother and her niece, Samantha, were...
