Jul 4, 2019 - A Vintage Weekend

The whole point of this adventure (that is what we are calling them now) is to be as spontaneous as possible. We had been in contact with our friend, Bryan, in Michigan and he mentioned an opportunity to camp with fellow vintage enthusiasts such as ourselves. Bryan belongs to a group called Tin Can Tourists which is the oldest and largest vintage trailer/RV club in the world. We have camped with them previously and really enjoy the camaraderie and ogling the amazing vintage rigs. There was a campout at Seven Lakes State Park from June 27-30...

Apr 17, 2019 - Holly, Michigan

Yesterday we drove north from Nashville on I-65 to Indianapolis KOA. It was an easy drive after all the rain the last day out. We enjoyed a great visit and dinner with our friend Larry. W e have stayed at this campground before. It is an easy to get to campground, although it's 5 or 10 miles off I-65. It did make for a nice little back road route to catch I-65 up the road a bit. Lots of good looking farmland, although we only saw one tractor working. It has been a wet spring here. We continued north on I-65 and then I-69 into Michigan....

Apr 20, 2018 - Holly KOA

We traveled north on I-69 today into Michigan. It was a cool but beautiful sunny day. Our destination was Holly KOA, which is about 10 miles south on I-75 from I-69, just south of Flint. Our friend Larry had already booked this campground, and we decided to join him for one more night. We have had an enjoyable ride north, each night meeting up and enjoying dinner and a campfire. Tonight we ordered Dominos pizza, it was delicious ( not for Glenna, I made her an omelette) This is another convenient camping spot on the way north. The WiFi is...

Aug 27, 2014 - Chelsea and Jiffy

Our destination today was the town of Chelsea and a tour of the Jiffy Plant. This was a great experience from start to finish. When we arrived, we were greeted by one of the tour guides who inquired where we were from. During our conversation, we told her that we were headed to South Dakota and she asked "Are you stopping at the Spam Museum?" which we thought was really funny because we actually are going to stop there on our way through Minnesota. The tour began with a couple of films and the opportunity to order products to be picked up...

Aug 26, 2014 - Farmers' Market and Museum

The county where the campground is located, Oakland County, has a farmers' market on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, so we started our day at the farmers' market. This is the real thing with farmers bringing their goods to sell. The produce was fresh and beautiful and we ended up buying several things. Since we were now halfway to Detroit, we decided to head further south and take in the museum at The Ford. It was a very interesting museum with Presidential Limousines from Teddy Roosevelt up through Reagan. Next came the trains. The 1601...

Aug 25, 2014 - Lake Huron Lighthouses

We decided to trek over to Lake Huron and take in some of the lighthouses. Our first stop was at Port Gratiot (pronounced Grashoe) where we signed up for the tour. This light station is the oldest lighthouse in Michigan. Originally constructed up river in 1825, the first light was not built to specifications and was too far up river. Eventually, erosion toppeled it and it was rebuilt closer to the lake in 1829. In 1862, the height was increased to 82 feet hight. The diameter is 25 feet. First we toured the brick Duplex which was added in...

Aug 24, 2014 - Frankenmuth

Today we headed to Frankenmuth. This is a small village founded by German's in the late 1800s. First, we stopped at Zehnder's Famous Chicken Restaurant. This is a huge place with a formal dining room upstairs and a smaller Z Cafe, cafeteria style restaurant downstairs. Also downstairs are gift stores and a huge bakery filled with all kinds of tempting delights. We chose to eat in the Z Cafe as had been recommended by Kathy and Don Frankforther. We both had - what else - chicken and Bill had a brat. Sue had the really good split pea soup and...

Aug 23, 2014 - The Ford

Today we headed to Dearborn to The Ford complex which includes The Rouge Factory tour, Greenfield Village and a Museum. The day did not begin well. When we arrived for the factory tour we were informed that Ford had stopped production at 3:00 am so we were unable to see the factory in motion. We did go to the factory, watched a couple of films about Ford history, saw some cool vintage cars and were able to walk around the observation deck and get an overview of what happens there. We had a less than satisfying lunch then toured Greenfield...

Aug 21, 2014 - Going to Holly, MI

Groveland Oaks, 14555 Dixie Hwy, Holly, MI, 248-634-9811 We left Van Buren at about 10:00am. The trip was only about 160 miles and we made one stop for food and fuel. Again the road was bumpy and under construction but we made good time and were in Holly about 1:30pm. This campground is just great. It is a county park. About half of the sites have concrete pads with the rest gravel and very level. The sites are all 50X50 with a parking slot for two vehicles off to the side. There are two lakes. The larger one has a waterslide and...

Jul 7, 2013 - Detroit, Michigan

Late start today, it was hard to leave our nice campsite in Streetsboro, Ohio. We headed west on I-80 then north into Michigan on Rt 75. It was depressing to drive past the huge, deserted, broken down auto plants and the very depressed neighborhoods of Detroit. You can see from these remains the magnitude that this city once was. We continued north another hour towards our next campsite in Holly MI. It has been a cloudy day with passing showers, which seems an appropriate way to end the 4th of July weekend. We arrived at our campsite by...

Aug 12, 2012 - To Buffton, OH

We visit the Henry Ford Museum today. It is in Dearborn. It is Sunday. Maybe the traffic will not be bad. Step 1: We easily find our way to an IHOP for breakfast. Step 2: Telegraph Road is a straight route to the museum. It is a good road and not busy. Hurray! We are very close to Detroit. We could spend days at the Henry Ford Museum complex. We visit the Museum only. If we lived nearby, we would have annual passes. The museum tells the stories of men and women whose vision and courage changed the world around them. It is a vast building....

Aug 11, 2012 - To Holly, MI

It rained a lot last night. This area needs rain. We cannot complain. We have had very good weather for the entire trip. The weather forecast for today is for more rain and wind. Most likely, the glass bottom boat trip will be cancelled. We like Alpena. There are many lakes beside Lake Huron but it is not a fishing day. We decide to travel further south. We continue on the Lake Huron Circle Route. This section of Lake Huron is very developed. Lake access is limited. For much of the drive, the road is fine but we cannot see the lake. It...
